paralyzed, instantaneously fatigued. >> reporter: laura has also developed visual problems, including sensitivity to light, which is whyhe is wearing dark glasses today. it's silar to what u.s. diplomats in cuba reported feeling and what the u.s. government now says were targeted health aacks. as mother and daughter struggled, laura says their dogs also began acting straely. >> they would be shivering under the bed. th w vomit blood. they didn't want to go back into the apartment after long walks. and they would run down the hallway and stop just where the living room begins. and ju sit there. and their heads would move simultaneously. we were so scared. we didn't know what could they possibly be looking at? >> reporter: after three months, lawyer, unable to tolerate it l anyger, headed back to the u.s.

diagnosis, fearing the worst, they rushe him in for treatment. >> a couple of days later left for st. jude and we pulled up here and that's when erything changed. >> reporter: everything changed suddenly for lindsey wilkerson, a young girl a fewes hundred m away in rural mississippi. >> i was 10 years old when i was diagnosed with leukemia. hearing that i had cancer i was terrified. >> when you are told that your child has cancer, time stops. >> my parents were checking thr bank account. they were going to put our house on the market, to sell everything, to hopefully provide me with the care that could save my life. >> reporr: like joel, lindsey's family soughtudt. j emotional burden was lied. >> they reminded our parents that we don't ve to worry about money, it's been taken care of. >> reporter: they rueling treat.

joel's arm was amputated. lindsey received three years of chemotherapy, and then. >> i rember meeting her for the first time. we were at a fundraising event for st. jude's. >> i thought he was smart and very, very funny. >> reporter: a deep connection began between the two young cancer survivors, but their paths diverged after their stay at st. jude's. lindsey moved mophis, taking a job in st. jude's fundraising and awareness organization. >> since the age of 10 i have known that there was nowhere else i wanted to be. >> reporter: turns out that's where joel ended up, too, working in the videoroduction unit. >> a change for both of us. i thought, all right, i am going to say it. i skipped a step fro i always liked you to saying i love you. >> he turned to me and said, i love you. and i knew it immediately.oo i loved him, i loved and admired him all my life. >> reporter: the place that saved them, inspired them, and ultimately united them.

turkey day dishes to the next level. first, here's what we had to say about the thanksgiving sides we couldn't live without vlgt one liof my favorites was broc casserole. my mom made it every year. ihink she used frozen broccoli and cheese wiz and rice. >> stuffing. not my mom's stuffing. not my grandmother's stuffing. isuffing that you get from the store tha already made. all you have d to is stick that baby in theov , warm it up and pour hot gravy over it. >> sweet potato poon. she would forebet about the dish with the marshmallows and the smoke detector went off because the marshmallows were burning. >> the perfect combination of cheese, milk, butter, all o ose things that lead you to an early grave. it's fantastic in moderation. >> craig had five drinks before that shot.

craig is already into it. >> hat's good. ah, lots of cheese. also taste the tobroccoli, >> it's good. >> blanchet and pour the cheese sauce over it into the oven. >> it's good. sorry, mom. >> we are not going to offend any mom in this repe right here. you go to the store and it's already made. if you really want to take the day-old bread in your house, some vegetables, chicken stock and eggs and throw it in the oven and you have stuffing. there is good store bought stuffings. i want to enhance ia little bit. so mushrooms are fantastic for thanksgiving. ius sauted someooms. take some gravy from the turkey and then just basically make like a mushroom gravy. pour it over the, just pour it over the stuffing. it will bring the stuffing, more moisture back to the stuffing,

and obviously -- over?ht >> put a little fresh thyme on th there as well. >> it's killer. >> is it? and then you can say you made the stuffing. >> that's right. >> you can say you made it? >> yes. >> my mom's mac and cheese. in our family, it's legendary.ck 18 sof butter, whole milk, six different kinds of cheeses. you know, it'sd the k meal you don't want to eat on a regular basis. >> i had the hardest time with this one. a great mac and cheese is hard to beat. however, i do want to do one thing to it. i like ctrast and texture. flavor is as important as textture. i made breadcrumbs am you can make your mom's mac and cheese, whoever is making it, and then i take some breadcrumbs. i take bread with some garlic and a little bit of butter and put them in the food pcessor and pour them on top and put it in the oven and get it crispy so you get that crunch with the
