that dangling a pardon in front of a witness like manafort is close to obstruction of justice. >> reporter: president trump insisting to "the washington post" he has noon inten of taking action to end the rinquiry. muels still there, he wouldn't have to be, but he is still there, so i have no intention of doing anything. it comes amid a report from the fwardian allegin eksecret talks between manafort and julian assange. manafort said he is considering all legal options against "the guardian." wikileaks going ap further tweeting, wikileaks is willing to bet "the guardian" $1 million and its editor's head that manafort never met assange. paul manafort is also now accused of breaching his plea agreement by lying to investigators. something manafort denies. as for the president's view of manafort when asked by "the e'washington post" whether do anything for his former campaign chairman, the president declined to comment on record.

back to you. >> all right. peter, thank you. let turn to nbc's justice correspondent pete williams. w paul manafor talking to prosecutors. he is cooperating with prosecutors and hanging over his head is whether or not he will get a long sentence and it all rests wcuh prors and the judge, of course, and at the same time he is talking to the president's lawyers, which is not illegal, but it's reay surprising. so what does this mean? do you think that manafort is angling for a pardon ephere? >> rter: you can't rule out that possibility. it rare for somebody to plead guilty and then agree to cooperate with the prosecutors to getighter sentence and then stop cooperating and let that dealvarate. and you have to assume that one possible explanation is he is hoping for a pardon. so that could be why, for example, his lawyer was briefing e trump lawyers on what the mueller team wanted to know. as you say, highly unusual for at stage of the prosecution. here's the thing. a pardon from would not get manafort home free. the president can pardon him for
