world. h >> president bush passed away in houston,te s. garrett haake is in houston this morning with more. garrett, what can you tel us? >> good morning. the bush familynnnced the death of the former president and their brief at his passing in a stament last night. there wasn't much detail about the cause of death. we know the former president, 94 years old had en in failing alth for some time. he was last seen in public casting his vote in the midterm elections back on november 1st. the president will be remembered as both a statesman and as a texan. we'll see elements of those bh things in his memorial services. there's a memorial service at in national cathedral washington d.c. he'lleturn to text the couple's hometown church where barbara bush was honored. the predent will be laid to rest at texas a and m

h.w. bush. the white house has now lowered the flag to half-mast. look to you in new york. >> peter, thank you. en have a m for a personal reflection. you've been in politics and covering politics for a long orme. >> rr: yes. what i'm struck by and i was in houston back in april shortlyhe aftereath of barbara bush. of course, theirs was the longest marriage in presidential history. 73 years. that was when george h.w. bush was hospitalized. i h o theortunity at that time as many people were already celebrating the life ora bar bush but also of george h.w. bush. you'll remember in 2013 when he was ill again, he put out a statement through his aides saying that folks should put their harps away. th legacy of george h.w. bush based on the conversations i've had with so many is just a lifetime of service. a two-time congressman. a cia director. a u.n. ambassador.

onvice president formally serving beneathd reagan. obviously he was the last of a generati presidents. the last world war ii veteran to rve in office. shot down in 1944. just 20 yearsold. facing enemy fire. there's so many ways to celebrate his life and legacy beyond his service in office is what he did to inspire a lot of icans broadly. i think that's how a lot of americans will remember him. >> thank you, peter. john meacham is aid prtial historian who wrote a biography called "destiny and power, the americanf audacity george h.w. bush". what have we lost? >> he was america's last great statesman. the last combat president. the last president of a

generation where while they weren't perfect, they'd be t first to tell you and certainly president bush would be the first to tell you, ae if didn't, barbara would, but they understand service toe country cam first. that country came before party. that the national interests came before selfish interests. that's not in a stnostalgia. that's ast stive view at decisions he made. before him armageddon was a possibility. after him it wasn't. before him there was a sense that america would be in a perpetual conflict with the soviet union. after him it was gone. what his -- the bipartisan he brought to the actual execution of power is something that seemo as now as the middle ages.

charismatic.or h.w. bush was a competitive person. i remember within five or six minutes o spending some time around him up in maine, i thout oh, that's how he became president. this is the kind of man you would trust with the destiny of your c because he communicated a sense of ability and serenity in the storm. now, i can hearim right now with maybe a martini pitcher behind him saying knock it off. that's enough about me which was part of the charm asll and it was authentic. one of the ironies, of course, is that a man who didn't like talking about himself went into the one line of work where you have to talk aut yourself. that was one of the reasons he was so goofy sometimes when he spoke. he always had his mother's voice in his head saying don't be a bragger, george. what we've lost here overnight is the embodiment of an american

country we set to how presidents live. their home for their time in office is our home. our own jim vance who passed away last year had a very special oortunity to go fishing with president bush while the president was in office, and this morng we want to share that piece with you. >> a month or so ago i had occasion to have brunch with president bush at the white house. i suggested he need not go all the way to arkansas for good fishing. he could find some great action th large mouth bass right on the potomac river. last week i got a call from the white house, and invitation from the president to join him for bass fishing on the river. what followed was a realll specoment in my life. actually, six hours of momentsa that begt 6:30 on saturday morning. that's when i met the president hishe united states at house and we got into his car to go fishing. now, i've been fishing the pomac for years.

usually it's just my wife and me or more often i go alone in my truck, but when you go with the president, you do not go alone. nor do you go in truck. if you look closely, that's me right there in the president'sht car, rig next to him. yoll notice, too, there's no traffic. true, it was 6:30 on a saturday morning, but when the president goes fishing, he doesn't do traffic. we puld in near an air space. i'm not going to tell you where we fished not because of presidential bsecurity,ut for my own security. there's fish there. i want to go back there. i will tl you this, though. you see that guy with the black shirt and his had on backwards? that's me. you see the bass on my line? i got him on a green spng lizard. they're deadly this time on the river. we fished two spots on the rivee, on president bush is one heck fisherman.

stay open through april 2019 due t financial reasons, the rest of the hospital is still slated to close on december 14th. after that datta the hospi says it will only take in nontrauma injuries. all new this morning, d.c. police searching for two suspects involved in an armed robbery. now, this happened on monday on p street in northwest nearby logan circle. they released the video overnight. police say the men approached a woman and pulled out handguns. they attacked and eventually robbed her before taking off. the woman is expected to be okay physically. now police want to catch these gentlemen, and they want to bring them to justice. they're offering a $10,000 reward to anyone who has information that could least to an ar the kansas city chiefs have parted way with kareem hunt. it happened hours after a video surfaced allegedly showing him pushing a woman to the ground and kicking her. itpe hd inside a hotel in
