>> i was in texas. >> this was a president, yousa that was loved no matter what your political bfiliation. >>ieve that's true. a lot of people attest to that. he reached acrosssl the and, of course, had friends after work that -- of all stripes. but when i woke up to the news this morning, i felt really sad. those o us with parents who heached their 90s live with the realization that days with us no matter how healthy they are, might be numbered. i met geor h.w. bush during my first job as a reporter in dallas, texas in the summer of 1980. i was sent to the republican national convention in troit. knowing george bush was on ronald reagan's short list for president. although the choice was top secret. i was invited to the suite where the bush family was gathering. i knew he was about to accept the number two position and wonder first down he felt a sense of disappointment that he wasn't at the topet of the ti

but he accepted his role with the same determination to be the best at whatever he did baseball, world war ii pilot, ambassador, whatever. when i came to washington in 1981, i was often with the bushes during one assignment or another. of all the things came to know about them both was their devotion and duty to family. it was hard to appreciate the ypth of a loss they felt when manyrs later they were still grieving over their daughter, robin, who died of rue chemoya when she was ree. with all the years that would pass and the many highs and lows they may have faced tuduring thr meves, nothing sto mute the grief they were left with when their daughter died. that's why when i saw this cartoonh jenna bush hager posting on instagram, it made m. sm it shows the president and his wife, barbara bush with their da ahter robin three years old still in heaven with a quote

with president bush at the white house. i took advantage of that to that heto the president need not way go to arkansas for good fishing. he couldin some great action on the potomac river. last week i got a call frothe white house, an invitation from the president to join him for bass f hing on theriver. what followed was a really special moment in my life. actually, six hou of moments that began at 6:30 on saturday morning. that's when i met the president of the united states house and we got into his car to go fishing.n now, i've b fishing the potomac for years usually it's just my wife and me often i go alone. when you go with ene presid you do not go alone. nor do you go in a truck. now, if you'll look real mesely, you'll see that's right there. in the presiden right next to him. you'll notice there's no traffic.

true, it was 6:30urn a saty morning. but when the president goes fishing, he doesn't do traffi we put in -- pulled in near the air force base, but i'm not going to tell you where we fished for my own security. there's fish there. i want to go back there. i will tell you this, though. see thatck guy with the b shirt and his hat on backwards? that's me. you see that bass on my line? i got him on a green spring lizard. they're deadly this time of year on the river. we fished several spots on the river, and two things must be noted here. one, president bush is one heck of a fisherman. he knows what a he's doing does it with passion and a great deal of patience. i got t first fish, but the president got the biggest. th other thing. you don't see much of us actually fishi because the press pool boat couldn't get closeenough. was supposed to take pictures, but quite frankly i never shot a frame, because when one is

fishing with the president, one is not inclined to waste time king pictures when there's fish to be caught, and there were fish to be caught and we. caught them i had, quite frankly, the te my life. the president said he had a good time too. and i think he meant it. one final observation. as a jrnalist i'm supposed to be unimpressed with pomp and circumstance and position. usually i am not impressed. but on saturds,, fo blew it. the fact of this plumber's son president's in the house, riding with him in his car and spendingix magnificent hours trying to catch bass with the president of theat united blew my mind. i will never forget that day. and il see to it that my kids don't forget it or their kids either. is that sophisticated? no. is it terribly pressional? no. do i care?
