she needs, a loving mom and a protective sister. what she doesn't have is one thing she'll need the rest of r life. a social security number. >> a social security number nowadays inot just the card. it is basically an identification for everybody. >> she said after she gave birth at the hospital, she filled out the necessary paperwork and waited for the card t come in. same thing when she had quinn. a week went by, another and another. something was wrong. i >> d get lost in the mail? i'm starting to think, if it got lost in the mail, was it stolen? >> after more than a month of waiting, she call the social security administration. they said wn't theiroblem. so she called the hospital and they said the problem was here in the recor office of the d.c. health department. >> what normally takes about two weeks to getia a s security card is now about two months. >> reporter: she said the problem was due to an ongoing issue with the vital r office, failing to get the information to the social

security administration. and that she wasn't alone. all told, the hospital said more than 750 babies born in the last two months have been affected b the sue. and all it can do is wait for vital records. hunthe says of all t things a new mom should be worriedabout, a potential identity theft of an infant isn't one of them. this lookingike back at you, it is hard to get too angry. within the last hour, the d.c. health department issued a statement admitting there was an issue saying they were first made aware the a was not receiving enumeration of birth files in november and immediately notified medical facilities. it is working to trouble-shoot the issue and apologizes for ane inconve this may have caused. parents can also apply directly to the social security administration. >> i was a teenager befor i got a social security number. with so many people earth now, they had to give it out when
