virginia. even blacksburg, virginia tech, 9.5 inches of snow there and 10 inches in ttcharville. what do you need to know about today? it's very slushy andno and icy for the southern part of the area. a lot of melting during the daytime hours today but a hard refreeze likely tomorrow morning. the snow isn'tur over for friends and neighbors well down to the south. around here it's all come to a stop because it is cold but just about everyone below freezing. teens and 20s for most. low 30s around the city and by the bay. for today, a cold srt but plenty of sunshine. afternoon temperatures today in the low 40s, but again, we're expecting aio s refreeze for tomorrow morning. that could be trouble on tuesdaor >> that'ssure. going to impact the roads tomorrow morning. chopper 4 right now hded to that problem on braddock road. here's what we know so far.

braddock road north of little river turnpike, all of those lanes shutdown because of downe. wi now we have wires across the road. they're trying to get that out of ty way 7:00 a.m. but it's still hanging around right now. lanes blocked by a crash there. inner loop and outer loop no major issues. nice and clear, but we still have the delay on 295 inbound near pennsylvania >> it's 6:02, our team coverage of this latest bout o winter weather begins in virginia. cole, how are the roads there? >> well, we continue to just kind of crue around and we're now on one of those side roads that we have been hearingas been giving crews quite a bit of trouble. we'll give you a look now. this is fox gate drive in chancellorsville. very snowy and slushy and icy as

well. this is something drivers if you'll have to be out,ou'll contend with this morning. i can tell you that on route 3 which is toad we took to get here is some what clear. you can tell those roads been well treated although there's several abandoned vehicles along the side of the road. you'll have to be mindful of what is around as well.e emperature is hovering around 56 degrees. everything that's fallen hast frozen this point. while some roads might have been treated. there's some that are still problematic this morning. if you have to be out on the roadways, give yourself extra time and be cathful. good news is there's no school in these areas so that will lessen the amount of traffic that you'll s on the roadways. back to you. >> nicole, thank you.

at drivers are seeing. their neighborhood streets do not look as clear. they're warning all of their fellow dvers to be careful out here today and make sure that they keein mind that they may not always see the ice below their cars and that any o the wet spots just might be slick. we're still below freing at this point here. we're here live in prince william county. j i'mtin finch, news 4. back in to you. thank yoght, justin >> 6:05 now and during the worst part of the storm, virginia state police responded to more than 2,000 crashes and disabled vehicles across the state. you're looking atfthemath of two crashes involving state troopers. the first, this happenedast night around 6:45 on interstate 81 north. that trooper and the driver were not injured. about 20 minutes later on i-95 south, a vehicleo slammed i the back of a trooper's car. he was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. >> the storm tt hit u

in this house fire. witnesses are telling them thao ther reportedly jumped out of a window and told firefighters her five children were still inside the burning home. 9. chdren, the oldest is the youngest was a 1-year-old baby. they were able to pull three of them out of the home to get them to the hospital. take a look at the live ptures from philadelphia. a 5 alarm apartment fire. dozens of people had to go out in the sub freezing temperatures. they are still not sure they got everybody outf that building. two firefighters have minor injuries. we did see one man tha was able to grab his cat and gsbelong and run down the stairs. they set up a shelter at a school nearby. keep an eye on that and learn more information. >> just terrible, chris, thank you. now, road crews have

reopened the arlington memorial bridge to traffic. the bridge was shutdown late frid night. that shutdown ended about an hour ago as scheduled. work on the bridge will last until 2021. >> also happening now, metro's yellow line trains are running again. that lin reopenedhis morning after a two week shutdown for repairs over the r.potomac rive they were able to get a look at the work they were doing there. crew replaced cracked and crumbling concrete during the shutdown. 's been called one of the worst in the metro system. >> today sentencin begins for the man convicted of driving his car into a group of counter protestors at a unite the right rally last year. he was protesting the removal of a confederate heatue. was found guilty of ramming

his car io the crowd. >> he is expected to appear in court a 9:30his morning. he's accused of abusing a child inside a northwestd.c. church. she says the abuse happened when she was 13 years old. >> ts happened early tuesday morning. she was walking her dog when she says she saw a lot of police rs. moments later a k-9 latched on g to her and she was unable to

a man stabbed the woman and then took off. surveillance video captured this. the attack happened on fort myer drive in arlington. the woman was walking in the area when the p suspectled out a knife and stabbed her. e e victim is now in sta condition. >> political backlash at a virginia school. theuperintendent says h refused to use a transgender students preferred identity pronoun. he was put on administrative leave. when he returned the principal onsaid henued using the incorrect pronoun for that student. >> i'm happy to use the new namd and a female pronouns so as not to offend. i'm not here to tovoke. >> twas, in fact,

wanted sign in the west wing here after this weekend's abrupt announcement that o chief staff john kelly will be leaving his position by the end of the year. the president needs a new chief of staff and he'll make a decision over the next feweeks and that in and of itself is a change. it comes at a tim when the president is almost at the halfway mark and he has other big jobs to fill. a new attorney geral has been named but has to be confirmed. a new ambassador to the un needing to get through senate and it comes at a time that the president is also trying to manage the on going fall out of the russia io investig this weekend again claiming that he had been cleared without facts to supporthat andt the same time also denying claims made by prosecutorshat he directed michael cohen, his

completely iced over but just a little bit away, you have snow. underneath all of this is that ice. that's what you want to bef careful ohen you're on the roads. it's more of the same there as well. ayette see here on l boulevard, the roadway has been etreated a littl but this truck here actually a just did little skid. so you see him continuing town do the roadway, you cannot underestimate the road conditions here in fredericksburg or throughout the surrounding areas. the roads have been treated but they're still very slushy and very icy. one other thing i want to tell you e'about, seen several cars with snow on the roof, on the hood, and jus a little circle in the windshield where they have cle sed off they can see. clear your car off co tletely. ont snow starts to move around and flies off of your caa it hazard to other vehicles on the roadways. that's something you want to be mindful of if you're going

on the roadways this morning. back to you. >> thank you. >> during the height of the storm, vir state troopers who were out helping those stucm in the snow b involved in crashes themselves. the first one happened last night around 6:45 along interstate 81 north. a vehicle hit the trooper's cruise the trooper and the driver were not injured. about 20 minutes later on 95 south in hanover county another one slid into the back of trooper. he was taken to the hospital with minor injurine. no else was hurt. >> breaking news in philadelphia. firefighters battling a 5ar ala ent fire. that means hundreds of firefighters on the scene here. chrisawrence at the live desk. >> that fire is massive and right now doctors are treating two firefighters for minor rn bu take a look at live pictures where you can see the crews on the scene there.

the fire sent dozens out there in the sub freezing es temperat this is in the overbrook area of philadelphia. not star from st. joseph's university. 50 people have been displaced bb this firause the building collapsed, fire officials had to evacuate some of the nearby buildings as well. it's so hot, so intense, they're not going inside, they have set up a shelter at a nearby noscho. word yet on what caused the fire but this is a time of the year when te start see more and more of these apartment and house fires. >> chris lawrence at the live desk. thank you. 6:51 now. a new head football coach will be introduced at howard university today. ron price will be announced in a couple of hours. before that he held several coaching positions with theoi de lions, the indianapolis colts and jacksonville jaguars. he'll take over for mike london that left howard to coach at the college of william &mary. >> let check in with chuck

bell for more on our forecast today. chuck, what are you seeing? >> weave a ver slushy and slippery start for the southern parts of thenews 4 nat early this morning. this isn't going to be a problem that lasts all day becau we'll have plenty of sunshine. by mid morning, temperatures will be above freezing. that combination means a lot of daytime melting today. but keep in mind, temperatures will drop and tomorrow morning black ice will be a serious concern. right now it's 32 in wasngton with a north wind. current temperatures are in the upper teens and wind chills down closer to 10 degreesthere. sub freezing down through fr ericksburg. below freezing across most of maryland there.

chopper over that one a little while ago. crash on the intersection and a lot ofebris with that one as well. laurel at 197, middle ofad the blocked by a debris from an earlier crash. uthbound 29 at tech road, an accident there as well. taking a look at our travel time. 270 southbound. 39 miles per hour. top of the beltway slow because of the earlier accident chopper was showing us just 24 miles per houretween 95 and 270. inbound on 66, 43 miles per hour and northbod 95. quantico to the beltway 25 miles per hour. remember to listen to 103.5fm when you hop in your car. >> it's that time of the year when many of us already put up christmas trees. they can be festive and beautiful but can also cause unwanted side effects. doctors refer to the problem as christmas tree syndrome. we talk about itchy, watery eyes, sneezing, head congestion, there's some things that you can do to cut backn that trouble.
