i'm eun yang. >> a big digout is underway this morning after that major winter storm. >> many people are still without power. >> and a lot of you learned this morning, a lot of our school systems are closed down, ass crre trying to get out there and clear the roads. news 4's nicole jacobs is in fredericksburg. what's it looking like there, nicole? >> reporter: well, chris and eun, the temperatures are a lot more bearable. that's one thing. so you're able to really enjoy the fluffiness of this snow. but on the roadwa, it's been ale litt icy this morning and the temperatures are helping that out just as well. i can tell you, this early snowfall definitely caught a few people off guard. but we've found some who are enjoying it. ti 'tis the season for snow. and while it may be a little early for some., >> yeah yeah, we expect it a little bit later, like january, february, or something like that. >> there's no turning back now. >> it's finally seasonal, right?

surely much more to come. >> and a live look now at route 3 in fredericksburg. the big concern right now is what will happen with all of that slush, all of that water, when the temperatures drop tonight. of course, it will freeze and that is more reason to be more carefulomrow morning. chris, eun, back to you. >> reporter: all right, nicole, thank you. for more on the snow or lack of it, depending on where youve we are joined now by storm team 4 meteorologist chuck bell. >> yeah, chuck, how quickly is all of that snow going to melt >> well, it will in relatively short order, especially on paved surfaces. the solar radiation will really melt away the snow very, very effect effectively. but the problem ebecomes, o the sun goes down this evening, all of that water that's been in ing off the yards particular can have an opportunity to re-freeze on the paved surfaces. and quite a bit of snow, indeedi ergreen, virginia, picked up the most in the commonwealth at

21 inches. igbut a jump of southern maryland, calvert county and st. mary's county in particular, as well as stafford and spotsylvaniavi counties in inia all had a solid 3 to 6-inch snowfall. meanwhile, we did not see a h single flakee in the washington area. there you can see, a live picture with a little bit of filtered sunshhee out now. that cloud cover will gradually move farther and farther away from us. so it will stay chiy today. temperature, 35 now. but windchills are in the mid- to upper 20s. you can see that north biwind, though, pushing all the precipitationanurther south. there's the clearing line right there, pushing its way southward through washington. so more sunshinec for thed half of the day today. and that will be welcome news. it's going to stay cold, though. we're only in the low to mid-30s now. today's high temperature, right around 43. we'll talk about how low those temperatures are going and how many freezes are likely in this coming week, coming up. >> thank you. we're working to learn a lot more about what caused an overnight deadly accident on the sutland parkway. you're looking after smo the

video police say two men were in a car when it went off the road just before mannight in ton road and southeast d.c. one of the men died. the other was rushed to the hospital. right now, police in arlington are dealing with a problem on 395. there is a multi-vehicle accident in thelaov s. there are four people with minor injuries and a gas leak. police are asking people driving in that area ton slow d and move over. some good news for a lot of u. metro's yellow line trains are running again. the line reopened this morning after a two-week shutdown from repairs on the bridgr the potomac. news 4 was able to get an exclusive look at some ofrk the wohey're doing. crews replaced cracked, crumbling concrete during that shutdown. that setch of trackas been called one of the worst in metro system. sentencing begins today for the manct con of driving his car into a group of st counterpros at a unite the right rally last year. james alex fields jr. wasth onef e white nationalistsot

well, we're following developments surrounding two devastating overnigfires. >> got to start wh the one closest to home. this five-alarm apartment fire philadelphia. nearly 200 firefighters spent hours battling both fire andas e dozens of people were sent out into sub-freezing temperatures around 2:00 this at least 50 people are now without a place to call home this holiday season. the two firefighters h to be treated for minor injuries. thankfully, nonetheless has been reported to be hurt in this fire. and we're still waiting to get word on how it started. > also this morning, the youngstown, ohio, community is in shock and searching for answers after five children were killed by this overnight house fire.bc our affiliate, wsmj is reporting that those children were between the ages of 1 and 2 years old. their mother reportedly out of a window and told first responders that her children were trapped inside. refighters say this wan emotional scene that they will

never forget. >> and even they don't see t things likt every day. the nfl is taking a big hit over domestic abuse allegations by its players. a couple of years ago, the league hired former d.c. police chief cathy lanier to address that issue. news 4's jacki cbensenered lanier over two decades and watched her bring transparency and passion to her job as police chief in the nation's capitol. and as jackie reports this morning, lanier remains candid in this exclusive sit-down interview. >> reporter: tmzel obtained h security video of then baltimore ravens star running back, ray g rice, punch his now-wife in a hotel elevator in t 2014 and obtained cell phone video of kansas city chiefs running back, kareem hunt, kicking a woman in a hotel hallway last february are shocking and similar. in between the rice case, subject of an investigative report by now special counsel robert mueller and the kareem r d.c.ase, comes for police chief, cathy lanier. in 2016, she was hired as vice

in arlotte, now. jay, we know it's probably still a little rough out there for the millionsn the southeast. what are you seeing? >> well, chris, eun, we've seen today rain, snow, and sleet, a wint that's causing a mess, not only here in charlotte, but across much of the stheast right now. >> battered, and in some cases, buried by snow and ic right now, millions across the southeast are dealing with the effects of a monster winter storm. >> you know, everything has really comeo a standstill. >> reporter: from texas through virginia, communities have been shut down by the severe, at times whiteout conditions. >> you know, around here, we get some snow every year, but this is a big one. this is a really big one in anybody's mind. >> and a bad one. trees and power lines snapping under the weight of the snow and ice, hundreds of thousands are without electricity. and it's also a tough f go those trying to get around.

>> you know, the insurance i business charlotte has ground to a complete halt today. >> that's like usn d.c., though. you know when we get a little bit of snow, it makes it tough yoing around here. >> that's absolutright. and they don't even have the benefit of snowplows and salting trucks, either. certainly tough sledding -- well, actually easy sledding for them down there today. but tough sledding for a lot. you just saw the video of the grinch there in boone, north carolina. of ocially 16 inche snow there in boone. linville, north carolina, just a little bit higher, 18 inches of snow, onston-salem, this is on to the piedmont and the foothills there of north carolina, over 14 inches my in-laws in christianburg, 18 inches of snow there., blacksbuot too far away, over 9 inches, and even north georgia, clayton, that's northeast georgia. 3 inches on snow d there. meanwhile, here in washington, it is a snow-fe picture from our tower camera this morning. these clouds, a veil ofloud cover, it's dimming the sunshine a bit, especially from washington and areash. so but north of town, the skies are

already clearing out a little bit more 35 degrees now with a north wind, averaging 10 miles per hour. going tonorth wind is keep the cold air draining right down through the state of virginia and into north carolina. there you can see what jay gray was talking about. the rain, sleet, snow combation is gradually running out of steam down here. orbut they have one ugly travel day today. things will start to impetve after weast tomorrow morning. but tonight, it's going to be a serious refreeze. here's the satellite, there you can see, cloud cover thickest from wasngton southbound. that's prevent, much of a warm-up. so fredericksburg in souther maryland, where they did get the snow yesterday, we're above freezing, but jus barely. every degree above freezing, lot. but wet pavement during the daylight hours will quickly freeze back over tonight into your tuesday i do suspect there will be more delays or closures for schools tomorr tomorrow. a fair amount of soushine coming way later in the day, but

hour, trying to prevent that for tomorrow.into we're live here in woodbridge, i'm justin finch, news 4. >>,just thank you. tacoma park police are investigating a dog attack. thisngne invol one of their k-9 dogs. this happened early tuesday morning near the intersection of carroll and maple. anna brooks was walking her dog when she saw a lot of police cars. brooks says moments later, a dog latched on to her l and she was unable to free herself. >> i mean, i was terrified, honestly. i just -- i never have had a bad encounter with a dog ever. >> reporter: brooks suffered serious cuts to her hands as she tried to pry open the dog's jaws. eventually, it let go. she was taken to the hospital, where she had to receive 21 stitches. tacoma park police tell us thee dog has taken out of active service as a precaution while they investigate. >> that's pretty concerning.al politbacklash at one school in virginia.

the superintendent, peter bancy, refused to use a an trender student's preferred identity pronoun. this happened in west point in october. that's in king william county in the etern part of the state. the principle put him onti administ leave, and when he returned, the principal says he was in bordinate and continued using the incorrect pronoun for the transgender student. so they fired him. the superintendenthief called it discrimination. he says it was a slip of the tongue. >> totally happy to use the n name, the name. i'm happy to avoid female otonouns, so as to offend. because i'm not here to provoke. >> that was, in fact, discriminato discriminatory. because all the other students were being used pronouns, but this student b was notng used pronouns. >> now, the tcher says says that his options on how to proceed, including a possible appeal with the circuit court.
