we're in hour six of the partial governmentshutdown. lawmakers and president trump could not reach an agreement on funding the border wall. but today we may see some movement here.he that's because senate goes back into session at noon. d is setting up to be a tense fews ahead as lawmakers and the white house continue talks. this comes as thousands of federal employees, many of whom are in our area, are wondering how long the shutdown will last. blayne alexander starts off our coverage. >> reporter: without reaching a deal, meaning a government shutdown, so what's next? >> i hope senate democrats will work with the white housen an agreement that can pass both houses o congress. >> reporter: an agreement to keep working towarsaa deal that sfies both parties and president trump who was demanding money for a border wall and pinning blame on democrat >> we're going to have a shutdown. there's nothing we can do a that, because we need the democrats to give us their

she's recovering from lung cancer suery. she had growths removed from her left lung on friday. doctors discovered the growths last month after she fell and fractured her ribs. bc news spoke with a cancer specialist at georgetown university medical center about her prognosis. recovery can occur because the rest of thean lungs compensate. part of the workup prior to the surgery is making sure you can tolera a surgery like that. ginsburg is the oest of thejustices . she's aeady hired justices for the next two years. whenou see lights and firefighters rushinget somewhere, you might assume the worst. they were just trying to get to one family on time for christmas. sha -- swe met the family.

saturday at the library. police arrested him thursday night at a homeless shelter. we have new details about an effort tomo guardrails from our area susan hogan is working for you with this important update >> reporter: we first told you arout the safety concerns surrounding thiscular type of guardrail known as the x light last year. several lawsuits claim they are defective and in some cases making accidents worse. tonight two parents who are calling for the removal of the guardrails aren't giving up their fight. >> this is the last place you think you're going to come to see your kids. >> sandra visits her son' grave at arlington national cemetery everysunday. her son was killed last february after crashing into a guardrail in maryland. >> h might -- mike, this is

steve. >> steve joins sandra for a recent visit to the grave site. the two share abond. steve's daughter also died after hitting an x-lite. >> we shouldn't bond over our children being killed by a defearive gudrail. in most of the cases the guardrails speared the vehicles. >> reporter: the maker of th x-lite says a variety of issues play into the outcome of a crash. but some aren't willing to take the chance. a consumer investigation h found at least 15 states are actively removing x-lites from the road. in july maryland announced it was replacing nearly 1,000 in the state. news 4 wd t work would start immediately, but five months later, we've learned the project

is still in the contractphase. the state says it's working through the a procequickly as possible and expects the removals to begin after the new year. virginia started replacing x-lites more than two years ago as part of a bigge project to update all guardrails tha don't meet crash test standards. they told us they removed about 380 x-lites and have fewer than 500 remaining. they expect to have them replaced by the end of 2019. >> reporter: since his daughter's deathwo years ago, steve has met with state and federal officials pushing to have the guardrails removed. he sayson he give up until every state commits to replacing the x-lites on their roads. >> i don't want somebody on my right arm next year. i don't want somebody to be rere. unfortunately t will be
