t house a senate may have adjourned, but that doesn't mean lawmakers havinhed this week's business. the partial government shutdown that had beenr hanging o the country's head for much of december became reality last saturday whe the clock struck midnight. >>f you're hoping for a quick end to the gridlock, don't hold your breath. this may linger on forays and into the new year possibly. susan joins us live with details on what needs to happen next. it's supposed to be the most wonderful time of the year but may not be for about 800,000 federal employees who are either not working right now or working without pay. it is christmas eve, washinglon nor to solving this impasse over the president' border wall. here's the latest. the president has been standing

firm at $5 billion that he wants for asall and h now calling it a physical structureay backi rom the term wall. that it doesn't have to be a concrete wall. the incominghite house chief of staff says a new offer was made to the democrats that is less than the $5 billion but that the president still firmly re the democratic demand of $1.3 billion. that democratic offer for border security but does not include a wall. at this point, both sides are blaming each other. the republicans saying that the ball is in the democrat's court. ey can reopen this government any time they want. democrats sing that t issue of border security is really about politics, presidential insecurity according to one, and that the president has the power to reopen this government. we even have some republicans saying this is more of a campaign issue that the president wants toling to rather than the real issue of protecng the border. talks breaking down. large parts of the government
