shooting. at first and kennedy streets northwest. the chief says people were shooting at two eac other just before 1:00 this afternoon when a bystander ended up shot in the head. is still alive at last check. d.c. finished 2018 with a 40% increase in homicides compared to 17. news4's darcy spencer will have more on this coming up for you ons4 at 5:00. it has been a busy afternoon forga police invesrs in arlington. good afternoon, everyone. i'm susan hon. pat and leon are off today. just hours after ringing in the new year, arlington skoinl investigating a suspicious death. it could turn out to be the rst homicide. a woman apparently stabbed to death this morning on 8th road south. cory smith spoke to neighbors who said she was a caring and generous grandmother.

>> just as you said, police are calling this a suspicious death investigation. no charges have been filed. no aests have been made. but investigators tell us, they have identified everyoneed invo in this incident including the victim. the policeaid it was a grandmother who lived here for several years. the tenants woke up to find the lot swarming with police officers in the building's lobby roped off with crime scene tape. inside, residents were bagging it up. police tell us the call came in just after 10:00 a.m. when officers arrived, theyhe foundemale victim and took her to the hospital where she later died. investigators believe this was an isoted incident. neighbors we spoke to say the violence hits too close to home and it is unnerving for them.

a toddler rushed to the hospital after falling into a rhino exhibit in florida. you are taking a look at the rhinocerosexhibit. the zoo is about an hour outside orlando. officials say the exhibit allows visitors to brush the animals with two foot long ushes. but a 2-year-old fell between the polls and made contact with the rhino's snout. thechild's condition is not known. the mother was also st to the hospital after she hurt her arm trying to pull the child to safety. switching gears, if you made a resolution to make more money in 19 could you hit the jackpot on the first day of the year. the mega million drawing is now the eighth largest ever.
