>> reporter: so many murders in our city over the juweekend, i' catching up. tonight the focus on the case here is the garfield house. a murder beyond death itself. more than 40 stab wounds here. the victim 36-year-old vongell found dead inside his second floor apartment at the garfield, a complex close by the national according to court documents he was stabbed 47 times. 40 stab wounds to the neck and chest, seven to the abdomen. his naked body found in the hallway of his apartment. the murder suspect identified as 26-year-old collin porter, navy corpsman stationed at quantico. he was found naked by police.

winter is making a big comeback we're looking at snow in the forecast for this weekend. how much? doug's going to tel you in three minutes. the kind of thing we never get to say, at least not enough. good news about cancer. fewer people are dieing from it. new report showing a 27% drop in in the overall cancer death rate in the u.s. erika edwards now with more on how this happened. >> reporter: fewer americans are

dieing of cancer in part because are sticking to new year's resolutions. >> they may not be drinking as much alcohol, may have lost some weight. >> reporter: they report a steady decline in cancer mortality in the past quarter century. resulting in a 27% drop in the overall death rate. credit also goes to drop inmo cigaretteng and early detection and treatment of the most common cancers like those of the breast, colon, lung and prostr economically, poor areas have higher rates of cancer fatality. >> if you don't have the economic resources, access to the latest treatments, that's where the problem is. >> reporter: death rates rose for cancer of the liver, pain koreas and uterus. leaving experts to continue work toward saving more lives.
