5:30 am
hi, everybody.om weto the final eadditidition of "the redskins coach's show". thecoach, in ct, is going to be around for a few more years redskins.the what do you think is on his agenda as this off-season is really under way? >> i think he's got a lot on his hands. you start with your team and your players and evaluating the players that you h throughout the year. they're all going to grade and oate their players. you go int your schemes, your systems, what worked, what didn't work. you start taking steps forward. is think jay i excited to do that. i know that he loves being here. i know that he wants to win here. you know that he wants to winre
5:31 am
there's a lot that he's going to get into beyond the team and beyond what it is, but that's his business. >> it's going to be a busy off-season. we had the coachasere week for an extended sit down. we'll continue to hear from him today on the final edition of the show. the coach on running bacdr an peterson and more. everyboy would love see a.p. back. >> you lost your top two running backs early, guice and rob kelly. chris thompson was banged up during the year in comes adrian peterson. the big question everybody wants to know is will he be back? how does that unfold? do we wait until march 13th a t hebout this? >> i think tre's going to be some talk with adrian. it wold be great t have he and derrius guice in the room at th same time.iu des is coming off an injury. he's going to rehappb. he's going to be eat. to have adrian will only help derrius in the long run.
5:32 am
i think the stable of backs we'll have here with adrian peterson hopully will be outstanding. if we can't get adrian, then i feeld about a back. >> as far as the wide receiver position goes, maybe you go and find somebody this off-season, maybe go out and draft somebody. it's almost like at this point you need a guy or a dude for a hreceiver. hod is that to find in an off-season? >> it's hard. if paul richardson can comean bk give us that speed. obviously jamison crowder is a free agentam quine in and did some good things, but he got hurt. he's areat prospect moving on. i still think doctson, his bes days are in front of him. he's a getting betternd better and getting more comfortabth what we're doing andbe will come more stable. i think that group is good
5:33 am
there. we have some young players. cam sims comingis off injury. >> he wase impressivearlier. >> robert davis coming off his injury. he has a chance to be an exciting player. you'relways looking to have some speed or another tight play. >> as far as doctson and players in general, you have the injury in the first season. rtain positions i always look at take longer to develop. it sms like receiver is one of those two or three year i guess projects to develop them into star playehe and so do you get a good sense of exactly what a guy like doctson can be? >> well, it's hard because doctson i've said it many times is nott' guy t going to thrive on getting lotssef paration from a defender. he's a guy that you have to give opportunity balls to, 50/50 typa lls. that's where he thriv. weust haven't given him those options yet. i think that comes with lex smith being more comfortable or coltoy that would have possibly happened then you get josh johnson and it a little bit different.
5:34 am
it does take some time, but it also takes time for the quarterback to realize what they can d if given the opportunity. >> let's talk quarterback. les talkquarterback, because we wish alex all the best as he recovers. saw colt in the building. he's got all kinds of stuff going on. he's going to be back. josh johnson played well at times when you brought him on board. i think the quarterback position for you in 2019 is something you're going to look at andth 's going to be a never-ending topic of conversation, jay. >> yeah. we're hopeful that these guys come back from their injuries. that's all we can do. you still have to address it in the draft and look at free agency because you assume these guys will be back. i think colt won't have any problem coming back. he's almost ready to play at the end of the year. he's fine. alex on the other hand, the type of guy that he is t the manhat he is, the effort that he's going to put into rehabbing is going to -- >> he's giving it a shot.
5:35 am
>> he is. anybody can come back from the injury that he had, it will be alex. but he's going on 35 years old and it's a tough injury to overcome. ideally with those two guys fineg back we're >> as far as colt goes, everybody says your favorite ayer on the team. what do you see in colt as ceiling in i hate to put that parameter on it, but a lot of people have this question of how good can colt mccoy be? he's been incredibly with some untimely injuries and kirk being in front of him. he b been nothi a great teammate and great player, but what do you see him as a starter? >> i think he's a great player, but there is questions about his durability. he got hurt in cleveland and he got hurt here his first year.he hurt his neck. he got hurt this past year with his there's some quarterbacks that will play 15 years and never miss a game. that is a question. obviously he hashe not had t opportunity to go out and prove me right or him tt he's the
5:36 am
quarterback that we canon rely i have to go back and realize what i've seen in otas and training camp ove the last four years of building this guy up. i think he's readyo go. but he keeps getting hurt, bang it. i think he's a great i's got plenty of arm strength. he can moven the pocket. very accurate. if given the opptunity and he can stay healthy, i think he can be everything we need. >> coming u after a time out here on "the coach's show", jay gruden, his thoughts o defense after this on nbc 4.
5:37 am
5:38 am
welcome back to "the coach's show". chris, the defense actually rated higher this year than in
5:39 am
2017 for the redskins, but towards the end of the season think they kind of ran out of steam. what are yourov thoughtsg forward on this defense? >> i think t defense has a lot to look forward to in the future. it starts up front. you say da'ron payne and john allen, first round picks. coach liked brantley. you have three or four guys up front you like. ryan kerrigan, 13 sack0 year, 1 sack year. decisions to make wh prest smith obviously. i think they like sean hamilton and you get ruben foster back likely after everything that happened. you have a front seven or a front eight or a rotation of a ont nine guy. that's something you can absolutely believe in. this is a defen that i think will be able to stop the run next year. jay would like to get morees re. he has to work on finding more pressure, not just ryan getting sacks, but more pressure. you start building in the
5:40 am
secondary, but there's some young pieces there. >> it ll be an interesting off-season. here is the coach on his defense. >> pick a position that wasn't an injured b position, looking forward to 2019 is a focus i think for the football team is linebacker, outside back. preston is going to be a free agent. you have a soaked ye econd yearn ryan anderson. robben fost ruben foster going to factor in? what's your situation on thene ckers? that's a fluid situation. >> when you're talking about had ae backers, kerrigan pro bowl year, so he's set in stone there. then preston is ant free a like you said. i'd love to get preston back. i'd love to get four sacks. but he did some other good things. >> he missed a game or two. >> he's very durable. he'sood against the run. i think we can ulize him a uattle bit better where he can rush onrds also. other than that, yan anderson did some decent g things. iet a lot of
5:41 am
opportunities. had some injuries late in the year. mckenzie is showing some promise to be a great pass rusher. obviously mcphee did some good things in there on the outside. we'll have to probably add another outside backer or two the insid backers is something we have to look at. sean dion hamilton, given the oprtunity with all the missed time and otas, he really turned our heads. i think he's got some great natural instinct. he's still trying to get legs under him from the knee injury in college. i think he'll get stronger and better. mason did some good things with unication. zach brown we try to utilize in sub packages later in the year because he.an r but i think that will be a position we'll have to lo at. josh clemons obviously did some good things. >> backo prest smith for a minute, you have a decision to make. the organization has a decision to make. i'm sure they have an off to make, but how do you put a
5:42 am
number out there not knowing what anybody elss going to give? do you have an estimation of whate might get somewhere? >> that's hard. >> how do you figure that out? >> it's hard, because i think you're banking on the upside still of preston. he's still a young football player. he's 268 pounds. he's 6'5". he has a skill s that he can be a very good outside linebaer defensive end. is teams on him as a defensive end? is he a three, four, outside backer type guy? i don't kw what the value is. i do know you take h off of our roster and we have a glaring huge need there at outside backer. there's no guarantee you're going to get a good free agent. all the good free agent pas rushers might get signed by their team. it's not easy. more wit the coach in a bit. we thank the folks at bob's discount furnitu bringing us the hot seat challenge. >> they warmed it up every for jay. >> i think they kind of felt it
5:43 am
along the year. >> i think every head coach feels it. it's ayear-to-year league as far as coaches go. i think jay actually wants to dish out the challenges. i get the allenges, but i think he really needs -- >> you know what, he even got a stool this year. >> he got a stasl. it blue. it was interesting. he loves it. he's so appreciative of bob and so are we. >> back to the coach's comments. so secondary, we talked corner earlier. your young corner has a lot of feexperience. , there's a lot of question marks there. you got ha ha as a free agent. another positn of interest this off-season. >> without a doubt. we have to look very strongly at thatn. positio obviously losing d.j. was a problem and it opened up a major hole for us. d.j. and monte kind of went back to back we had depth and then added ha
5:44 am
ha and then became one of our weakest. everett did come in and knock people around. he's auy great to have on this football team without a doubt. and he's got great speed and instincts. great special teamer. obviously we have to figure out what's goi on with monte and ha ha is a free agent. if we lose ha ha to free agency, you're going to have to add one. >> we talked about your relationip with these guysnd i know how you feel about all these guys. you have orediscussions, meetings and talks with players haan anyone really understands. i'm surehappened with d.j. was probably hard for u. >> it was hard. i actually like d.j i liked his passionor the game. somemes he couldn't reign it in unfortunately and it became a problem with the outside world. it's something that had to be addressed. i tnk as a pro, and he'll learn from it and hopefully he'll continue toave a good career, but as a pro, you have to keep certain things in-house.
5:45 am
to behings do not nee discussed with the outside world. they can be discussed in-house. we can fix them in-house and that's where it needed to stay. >> when you were described as a player'scoach, does that make you feel good? >> i like everybody. i >> i do like you. i don't really care. my job is to get the most out of them, whether i'm a player's ach where i scream and yell all of practice. i don't know how much they get out of that. i can do either way. b i'veeen a player's coach. i can talk to them at lunch. but i can alson get o them pretty good from time to time. i think there's a good mix y. have to ha >> any possibilities of any kind of changes, scheme for you? everybody wants to know four three, three four. cooley b hn hearing it. you like a three three. >> i'm not coaching. >> yeah, i think 70% of the time you're inef subse anyway, four out front, two backers and a nickle.
5:46 am
it's basically's fe.r th the other 30% both teams will have an odd and even front and bring the linebacker on the line of scrimmage which is a three fourpe defense. onnel wise i think we need to do a few things different. maybe move our front atl l bit more. give these guy to get off double team. we've been drafting three or ur people since four years since i've been here. shanahan switched to a three four when he first got here. these guys are big people more suited for the three four. not to say they can't do shoot gaps and play a four three, but we can look at it. >> check out the redskins podcast. riggo the diesel, 26 minutes with cp and coolly at the park with chris cooley.
5:47 am
5:48 am
5:49 am
welcome back to "the coach's show". we want to thank the great folks at the virginia lottery for bringing us the pulse of the team. >> high heart rate is dangerously high right now. >> we appreciate the virginia lottery. pulse of the team, virginia lottery, we're game for the redskins. you had time. a lot of funin bre down the plays with the coach this year, more than usual. >> it s all time, man. i got to pick some of the plays this year. you didn't just pick them all. you finally trusted me putting
5:50 am
on some good plays. w yoldn't let me put on any ac the bad plays. the thing about is he's so good at going through it and honest at what happened and honest with his guys. he likes talking ball. it's a lot of fun. >> and you had some new gadget this is year which we're going to seend next year maybe online for your podcast as well, your coach's paint. >> oh, yeah, the coach's paint. i got all the graphics and highlights and details. we're just going to get it all figured out. how to put it on tv the right way. >> here's some of the best of the coach's film breakdown with cooley brought to you my microsoft. >> coach, let's look at our offense. a big shot to mo harris on a route right here. you like thein stars c in? that's looks good. >> this is weird stuff. >> super weird. it's lines on a screen. 3d coverage. >> how do you do that? >> special clicker in my pocket.
5:51 am
get a good i match-up the middle of the field with mo harris down. look at that ball. what is alex smith looking at? >> we knew this covered. they played seattle, atlanta, jacksonville. they play this 3d coverage where you lineup three receivers with speed. this linebacker has to open up his field and cover the receiver. they all do it. they've been very successful with . this safety plays on hash. you want to get this cat outre nd give him a shot one-on-one against theer lineba otherwise, we have a nice half back choice. off of this cat we could work ir andn peterson on the choice route. pretty good play. much if this safety wants to get nosey and cheat over here, hen we hav them working two-on-one in that corner. coach, third downnv sion. big throw to jordan reed. it's loom like you knew the were going t give you zone
5:52 am
blitz. maybe a little lean inriere t behind him. one two combination. ckers are going to end up bringing four. >> this is a play. watch chris thompson. this is why i have admiration of chris thompson stepping up in the holend protecting the quarterback with greateverage. baicks his face in there. gives the quartck time to throw it. great route. great depth. we switched relief. jordan did a great job ofg leand getting open and alex did a nice job of fining oue seam. >> i didn't wan to get too crazy with chris thompso because i knew you would be pumped, but you gave you this version. second. why can't we pick up four with our li ? >> we ca >> why didn't we? >> because they mugged up here. we had clay matthews over here. i want to make sure our left tackle is going outo clay matthews i would prefer chris thompson . t to block clay matthews.
5:53 am
>> good idea >> thank you. that's why they want him toush and not cover. >> he's lost out nope.e. don't drop outside linebacker. i've noted that for myself, so i'll just remember that. >> good. i just keep pulling up matt's sacks for you because i know how hard you and him workr afterice on all these moves and all the stuff you're teaching him. you've done such a good job. walk mehrough this one. >> t t would be called a swat. got the inside arm on the left shoulder pad.at t off of you and bring the left arm underneath and get to the quarterback in big matt. there's the rip. swat. there's the rip. now let get the hips through and make sure we get our feet coming towards the quarterback quickly. i'd like him to be down a little bit more. got to get down a little bit, matt. but the power he has with that swat and now the rat. th an excellent job. watt. rip. >> you cane teach this.
5:54 am
>> that's why quarterbackst wea ti jerseys. matt ryan's jersey was too loose. >> put vaseline on it. >> you getth checked for. >> not in the middle of the game. >> you can't vaseline in the quarte >> they should try it. >> and switch at halftime? >> yeah. >> i like it. good idea. >> thank you. as we go to theme break, of the sights and sounds here at redskins park. there is nothing sadder than empty field of play. nothing sadder. nothing sadder than an empty field in january. >> yes. it looks beautiful, but there's nobody out there. the fields are covered. it's wait till spring and fresh root growth of that grass. >> new sod, he we go. you know they resod the feels every year. they tearphem all and resod them every year. play. go out and they don't have to be empty.
