the afternoon. what we're seeing, no longer is it everybody seeing the snow. we have some of the heavier ow, even lulls down around fredericksburg. right now in the city and right around the metro area you are dealing with some purple. that's the heavier snow. the brighter white, that' lighter snow but some heavier snow coming right there downtown ord through our studios here in thewest and fairfax county. really heavy snow coming up around i-95. right on down to the south. now speaking of down to the south, we're watching this area of southern maryland,xtreme southern st. mary's county. we've seen that go from sno to sleet to freezing rain. that will be an issue we have down in the extreme southern areof sain mary's county. more snow to come. we have the storm right along the coa here but the upper level low, very broad area of low pressure moving throath. going to help to enhance the snowhe throughout day today. we will see it for the next couple of hours. right on through the night tonight as ll. that's why the national weather

service has extended the w ter storwarning. again, for everybody until midnight tonight. or'll continue to watch that you. let's see how much snow we've gotten across the area cl anderson, earlier this morning we had measured six inches as of -- in our area at the storm team 4 weather deck.e what hu got now? >> right now we're closing in on 7 inches. we're in the ebb and flow. the sw is now coming down with a vengeance. that purple area is right outside our studios as the snow begins to come down. the snow totals contie to add up. snow totals include 7 inches for restin, 6.8 for bethesda.st ct of columbia, we're closing in to over 6 inches, close to 6 and a half and more. you can imagine areas south and east a the totals will continue to climb throughout the day. with that, we'll keep an eye

i'm going to do a measurement later because we had thatth lul doug talked about but now the snow is picking up and so is our snow stick challenge. this is what's at stake, it's the official pat collins snow stick and this is how you can get one of your very own. here to m helpe is rachel and boomer. this is boomer's first snow and first appearance on tv. we are calling this the sunday snow suit challenge. what we want you to do is put on your best snow outfit, go tside, strike apose, hold that pose, take a picture. send that picture by twitter to pat's snow thstick. best outfit gets the stick. now we have entries already coming in, scores of entries. in fact, we have some back i don't know, do we have them?

which is not far from waldorf. how is it out in prince gorge county, aimee? >> reporter: the snow has let up thin the past couple o hours. it's not snowing nearly as hard as it was earlier, however, the wind has picked up kind of coming more sideways into our faces. i want to give you a look behind me at the parking lot. we've been checking out several eifferent shopping centers. the plows have to work, done their thing bright and early so all the parking lolgts have been cleared out. it should be smooth sailing. they've built their mountains th all the snow out here. alls of these mou built up. i want to step over here and show you guys how much snow we'veeen in this area, a couple of inches you can see there. taking a look at the roads, the roads have been plowed, he main ones at least. this is cranegh hiway. owen though the main roads have

been pl, they are slippery. we did hit some patches of ice coming along. do be careful. you see the cars speeding along. state policeo want warn people to use caution. take a look at this embankment. earlier we saw a car that had fallen into a ditch just like this e. certainly you'll want to use caution. as far as what type of snow we've been seeing out here, i want to give you one more look thchblt is somewhat conducive to snowball making. the wind is kind of blowing it away. it's making it a little difficult but definitely a little bit better for snowball making than we saw earlier. >> years of practiceat at aimee, she points out earlier, these roads, we're not out of the woods yet. just because you sawhe roads going flying by, we'll have a refreeze and more snow to come for hours. >> youe watching news 4's big coverage of the first snowstorm. pe,le from new jers we're

of snow. right in through the district. most is lightround gaithersburg. d.c. picking up some snow. looking outside. yeah, coming down good. starting to see some wind pick up. that's because the area of low pressure along the coast is starting to strengthen. fredericksburg, you had a little bit of a low hanging around dahlgren. more snowmaking its way in. you see what i'malking about. here's the low pressure area starting to get its act together. starting to see the winds shift out of the northeast. that will help to bring in a little bit of moisture. at t same time we have the upper level low spinning back to the you can feel a spin here. that will move through and enhance the snowfall.we l see more throughout the day. we're not done wngh this by a shot. i don't expect it to move out until 7:00, 8:00. hour by hour dc south and east the best chance. still snowing through the north. again, we are going to be seeing most of that up to the south as far as accumating snow.

watch what happens, 3:00 south and east. you will see more snow during the afternoon even up towards the north andhen by around 8:00 you see it become more spotty and then out of here by 1010 or 1:00. tomorrow morning, no snow and a lot on the ground. we've heard apl c of school cancellations. i definitely expect more. how mu more snow? i've been updating it. up to an inch, possibly. leesburg, frederick. montgomerycounty. one to two inches. let's take you on a tour. hagerstown, leesburg, upo an inch of snow. that's additional from what you've already gotten. d.c. bowie, fairfax. one to two inches in these locations. warrington as well. one to two inches more. two to four, this is the area that's going t see the heaviest snow around qutico,

fredericksburg. quantico beach. fredericksberg, you're seeing a mixing and it will go back to snow for you later on. maybe another one to two inches, that will be about it. most of this is from d.c. santh east but we'll continue to see snow off and on area wide throughout the afternoon. here we go again. next couple of days. monday looks good. tuesday and wednesday. melting with sunshine. every morning getting up and getting out the door. watch out for ice every single day early in the morning. we will see melting throughout the week. thursday we start to see the clouds increase. thursday throu friday, sno early friday morning and then most of friday is dry. temperatures actually reboundo 46 on friday. then we get here and, guys, this looks like a big storm. dot know if it's going to be rain, snow, sleet or what just yet, b it isust -- it is another big storm that does fit the pattern here thatou we
