this morning? what do you think? >> what we're going to see throughout tat day is tempes warming into the mid-30s. right now, we're just below or right around freezing, so some melting then a refreeze. i have t tnk the gang, this is the ninth largest january snowfall on rord based on the 10.3 inches that fell at reagan national. the seventh biggest two-day storm in the last 30 years and it was a long duration storm. we had snow and reagan national utr a consecutive 35 hours there. so really impressive in the time as well as the amount. here's a k loob at the radar. we're all dry orw. for the my of the workweek, we stay dry. wen had some time to cl. i'm working on update iing this. parts of gaithers burg had over a foot of snowfall. i'll have more on that plu what u can expect tomorrow morning coming up at 11:20.

and land as well. and we are also on the ground down there for several hours this mornin beginning our morning in fredericksburg working up here to northern virginia. what we saw was really a mixed bag. main roads looking prey good. route 7, b 95, looking clear. diciern points o overpasses, ramps and bridges. for the most part, clear. the trouble spots were really the secondary streets where plow us were still going, but needed more to get those areas really super clear. still lots of slush and ice on those roads as well. and as you make your way on to those main roads, still seeing icyconditions, too, and that continues well into this morning just a few hours or so ago. and today, lots of schools are out, more places too, some are still going to work. one guy said this weather, thi snow, actually put a smile onon

seen dozens of crashes. many seem to be along 270. what's to blame? slick roads, people going too fast? things.bination of yesterday and the weather then we had a significant dose of presip talgsation last night. the road crews are out working all day and night, but y have the areas,e especially elevated ramps and bridges and overpasses where you have some pretty slick conditions. this morning, i'd say in the 6:00 hour before the sun came , we had a number of crashes as you mentioned. most were alonghe 270 border. some in clarks burg, but most near the beltway and where we are t re. so m it is you know a combination of speed and slick road conditions. >> sounds like folks need to slow down. also, we were talking earlier about the snow on top of the vehicles. a lot of people rushing to get to where they need to be, they're not fully their car.off is that a problem? is it legal? >> i think it can be a problem.

i've seen it in my travel thiyo morning wherhave a, some cases, most of the people around here have a foot of snow. so some of the minivans,uv dss, even trucks have that snow on top of their vehicle. you get out here now going at a good clip of speed, that has a tendcy to blow off. not only may slide down on to your wind shield,ut fly on to the motorist behind you. it can be a hazard. thank youht, people, so much for joining us. really important words there. if you are hitting the roads, be sure to slow down and clean off your entire vehicle because that's the snow that's coming off your car could contribute to an accident. back to you. >> all right. megan fitzgerald, thank you.

one way to spend a know day sunday. an epic snowball fight on the national mall. dozens o people gathering for a friendly battle in the snow. some would call it friendly. we were out there right in the middle of the action. not the first for the district either. for year, people have spent their snow days t near city's historic landmarks just battling it out. >> looksike fun though. >> it was. a blowout in boston and thriller in new orleans. leaves us with some great match-ups for championship weekend in t nfl. in new england, the patriots jump out to a t lead byhe chargers. pretty much or by halftime. final score, 41-28. tom brady and the atriots will go to kansas city to play the chiefs on sunday for a shot at the super bowl in new orleans. the action was much tighter. saints and eagles were neck and neck all afternoon. eagles came up short with a late fourth quarter drop on their final drive.

above freezing in leesburg and the river as well. looking at the latest visible satellite imagery, a lot of ,unshine developing. for the afterno partly to mostly sunny skies. that's going to help melt all of the snow. marshall picking up almost 10 inches. resten seeing 9. leurg almost afoot. gaithe gaithersburg over a foot. almost 10 in annapolis. baltimore picking up 9nches of snow. it was impressive by far. as the storm got closer, it only developed on friday, as we got into friday night and saturday, we were see iing the potential r over a foot of sno.in some sp truthfully though, that potential looked like it would be around washington which did happen then areas to the sou but what happened with thest m storm, the heaviest snow in d.c. and areas just to the north. i'm going to be breaking that down at news 4 tonight.

we would be dealing with the snow, the biggest question was how muchsnow. the upcoming storm system for your weekend is what are we gogeg to rain, snow, sleet, freezing rain. that's the biggest question with this storm system on saturday and sunday. at least for most of the workweek, dry and chilly. our next chance for anything is goin come really on thursday night. but with temperatures during the afternoon hours, right above freeze iing, and then dipping i the 20s overnight, we're going to beng deaith a refreeze. pretty much every day this week. so you want to be cautious for black ice. it's one of those things whet if looks wet, you want to treat it as if it's ice. doing the penguin walk. that way you're not slipping our i'm really keeping a close eye on friday, but especially saturday int sunday. the thing is, monday is martin luther king jr. day is most of us are going b to be home,y,o fortunat maybe you're not getting another three-day weekend because you have that on your calendar.l

in the last 24 hours, they've received dozens of calls for emergencies, many of them right along here on i-240, 270 rather where drivers w ld lose control of their r car and crash. it was a dangerous morning for a lot of drivers in montgomery county after the region saw it first snowstorm of the year. first responders rushing to several crashes on i-270. before 7:00 a.m., all northbound local lanes we blocked off after a police cruise you ara was struck br. that officer was on scene trying to help another driver who had control ofter losin his vehicle. this happened near montrose rose in rockville. then look at this.ss han an hour earlier, tire tracks in thenow show the past this vehicle took when the driver slid off the road, continuing over an on hbankment. thpened near shady grove road. minutes later on 370, two more vehicles hit the hazard lights
