what are police telling you now? >> reporter: right now d.c. police tell us thathey are searching for the suspected shooter in this case. the shots rang out around 3:00 . here behind you can see that detectives are still on the scene. they are tking to people in the neighborhood. forensics took up shell casings and other evidence on the block. let'soll some video now. first district commander morgan cane told me several streets were fired around 3:00 this ening. now there was an officer nearby. he immediately arrived and found the man in his 20s laying in the street with several gun shot wounds, he was not breathing, unresponsive. medics drove him to a hospital and doctors pronounced him dead. cameras have caught the spect and enabled them to id him. but they are notelsing his name. this is the 12th homicide this

protect the russia investigation on the first day of his confirmation hrings barr told the senate he believes it is, in his words, vitallymportant that the special counsel be allowed to complete his investigation. nbcews justice correspondent, pete williams joins us now. a lot of democratic senators were worried about barr's views, did he address it today? >> he was a strong advocate of presidential powers the first time he was attorney general. and he was asked a lot o questions about a memo he wrote in june saying the mueller team was wrong saying a certain firing could be used for the fbi director. he defended that today. he said that was not intended to be a criticism of the mueller investigation only based on what e time butout it at he fully supports mueller. he doesn'tve belhe
