"news4 midday." i'm erika gonzalez. >> i'maw patn muse. the longest government shutdown now entered y has day 26. lawmakers and the president don't seem any closer to reachi a deal to getting 800,000 federal employees back to work. >> we'll show you a live look right now at the white house. in about half an hour the president is expected to meet with the bipartisan problem solvers caucus to discuss ways to end the shutdown. this comes oneay after a group of house democrats skipped a shutdown meeting. m news4's susancginnis has more from capitol hill. >> reporter: with federal workers soon to miss a second awmakers from the house bipartisan problem solvers caucus meet with the president today, but hopes aren' high following tuesday's debacle when the president bypassed democratic leaders and invited rank and file democrats to talk, all of them declined. >> this was supposed to be a bipartisan lunch. the sheer nact that a single democrat was able to show up. >> i'll meet with him any t

that site downtown that just opened a couple of minutag adam, set the scene forus. >> reporter: what a sight down here, guys. you can see the lines as they are now wrappidg outs the door. a lot of people inside already. this is at 7th and pennsylvania northwest right across from th archives, right by the navy memorial. the idea here is any federal worker who is affected by the shutdown can come down here, ershow their gent i.d. and get a meal. they can either eat it inside or grab bags of food to go. take a look, we were inside earlier today as the prep was going on and the anticipation ilding for what is going to become a seven-day-a-week mergency kitchen, as chef andres is calling it here for federal workers in the nation'sg capital, as s the shutdown goes on. a lot of people here showing up saying that they just want to support others. n it'sot just people coming down for a meal. there are federal workers isvolved in preparing the food. take an to the executive director of this whole

operation. >> it's been incredible to see the outpouring of support. we've got, you kn, many federal employees who are volunteering with us today and will be throughout the week to support their fellow citizens, 'rllow americans that are in need. going to be here. they can come down. we have a cafe. people can eate nve free hot coffee along with the free meals and takeaway bags so people can take if they need to go. some of our employees are still workg, even though they're not getting paid. >> reporter: i'd say at this point chef andre a is getting lot of media attention as well. media members here are pretty much numbering everybody just ebout one to one. you look at th line as it continues to grow down here. this is open from 11:00 to 6:00. if you are a federal worker who is impacted boy the shutdo, again, bring your i.d. although theye say they t here to turn anyone away. a nice sight here in washington as we continue to deal with the shut >> adam, thank you.

>> i grew up in d.c. in a family of federal government workers. my parents, siblings, cousins,f all them spent time working in the federal government. this morning i want m to share cousin's story. normally at this hour of the day, she would bet work right now, but this empty nester, who has an important job keeping the flying public safe, is at home, ghed from her job at the tsa. 27 years in the feder government, my cousin, wanda taylor, is no stranger to a government shutdown, but it's never been this bad before. >> i amed conce about being able to pay my bills, of course. i'm concerned abo my credit, just like anybody else who relies on working and being able to pay their bills and to survive. >> when she's at work, she writes airline policy for the tsa and life is hectic. there's not much time in the week for quality famil time or to just sit and read a book, hit the gym, clean her house, and just take time for herself. but there is now.

some are in an uproar over theg parentment posted online. it states the school reserves the right to refuse admission to any student embraces homosexuality. it is part of emmanuel bible church. pence previously taught there for 12 years. there is a renewed hope thia year virginia lawmakers might okay a plan to provide drivers privilege car for undocumented immigrants. right now as many as 0,000 undocumented immigrants might be driving without a license in the commonwealth, and as northern virginia bureau chief julie carey reports, supporters say it's not a political issue, it is one of publi safety. >> reporter: when she gets behind the wheel, she has her driver's license with her. she came to virginia from peru in 2000 and got her license before the state required proof of legal residence. but she wants all undocumented immigrants to drive with the safe confidence she has. and with her own teenage son out

onhe roadnow, safety is her biggest concern. >> translator: what i'm mostlyut concerned a as a mother is that virginia roads are safe. and so i want to make sure that every single person who's driving behind the wheel of a car in t virginia hasen driver's ed, has passed the driver's test, knows the rules of the road. >> reporter:za mendo joined groups who are urging virginia lawmakers to create driver privilegeards that would be issued by the dmv to undocumented immigrants. the recipients would have to prove they paid state income tax and they'd have to meet insurance requirements. >> for now we have 300,000 people who are driving without a license simply because the state won't allow them to get one. that makes everyone less safe, not more safe. >> reporter: those who for undocumented immigrants say they have another motivation. when someone is caut driving without a license, it can often lead to deportatioit >> drivingut a license is a good way to end up with a quick trip to a il, and a

armed gunman who walked intoba in the area here right near wayne drive here in silver spring. that suspect then fled the bank. what's unclear is that the dspect was shot. we't know exactlyt who s the suspect as he was making his way toward the metro but we do have chopper 4 video moments above he was put sinto an ambulance andaken away. the reason why officers tell use they have pusd the perimeter further back is because there was also a call for a suspiciou package thas found in the area. that call was made at the same time as the call for the armed gunman that walked into the bank, so right now officers are trying to determine what exactly is in that package and if it is a danger to the community, which is why they are pushing people back so that they can make that discovery. a lot of people's cars obviously in the areahere. but this is still a very active scene, a very active investigatio of course w will be here collecting more information. as we get it, we will bri it
