snow in the forecast over the week wds. >> that't we did not want to hear. but let's start with jay gray, he's looking at conditions across the country right now. jay? >> reporter: driving rains along the west coast and in some areas close t a foot of water soaking and swallowing communities this off-ramp had to be shutdown along the 805 in san diego after a sinkhole opened up there. in other areas mud is the problem. seenos in malibu and end where this home was battered with more rain on the way. police gre nowng door-to-door in areas ravaged by wildfires, fst responders staging and thousands concerned abt the potential of rolling walls of mud and debris. a rare blizzar warning is in place in parts of california's high country. 12 to 15 inches of snow is expected by the end of the d

the bb & t bank on wain avenuet with any cash. meagan? >> reporter: that police officer ended up shooting that suspect in an alley and then they ended up taping off the entire area because that suspectaid he had a bomb inside his backpack. scary moments unfolding in the middle of dntown silver springs just before the lunch hour rush. this was the scene after montgomery county police say an armed gunman walkedth into bb&tnank on w avenue and went straight to the manager's office. stated he had a bomb in his backpack, he also lifted up his coat and displayed a handgun. >> he says the suspect dammed $20,000 in cash, but the manager was able to hit p theic button to alert police and the suspect

took off. chopper 4 was flying above moernts after the off spotted the suspect who was heading towards the silver spring metro station. >> at which point he was nt conf by a montgomery county police officer who observed the suspect with the backpack on. there was a confrontation. the suspect was then rshot. >>eporter: buildings were evacuated, then surrounding reets blocked off while police used robots to investigate a possible bomb inside the suspect's backpack. it was a disruptio for some folks. >> it's just crazy for this area. >> reporter: but in the end no one got hurt. >> guess crazy things happen. sounds like something from a movie. >> reporter: now, police tell us something that was designed to found ke a bomb was inside the backpack but no explosiv were recovered as for that suspect, we're told

he died at the hospita back to you. >> thank you, meagan. police tell us a car was traveling on mlk highway, that vehicle a second car that was trying to maken a left t collided. one of the drivers died at the hospital. the csh under investigation. as the government shutdown drags on, some democratic lawmakers have questioned whether the president truly understands the pain being felt across the nation. >> well, they may have found a way tomunicate that and keep it real. the president's state of the unionaddress, the report to the nation is mandated by the constitution, but there is acally no requirementor it to be a live televised event before a joint session of congress. >> house speaker pelosi is urging the president to postpone the speech until after the shutdown.

blaine alexander joins us now. how's this request going over at the white house? >> reporter: the state of the union address is less than two weeks away as speaker pelosi and other top democrats are saying that with the shutdown there's a concern now over security during such a major event. but some republicans areng dismissi that as a political ploy. today house speaker nancy pelosi step, a stunning suggesting the state of the union be rescheduled because of the government shutdown. urging president trump to either send his speech in wting or wait until after the shutdown is over. ofthis is about hundreds people working on the logistics nd security of it, most of those people are either furloughed or victims of the president's shutdown. >> i just think that's sortf tactic, making things worse. >> reporter: pelosi insisting she's not disinviting the

your next meal is coming from. today hundreds of furloughed federal employees waited in line for a free meal, courtesy of chefe j andres and his world kitchen foundation. >> folks have struggling and they've got to feed the families and pay their rent. and we hope by activating this kitchen we can provide a little bit of support. >> reporter: for sabrina brooks this is god send, a much needed break from the endlesshone calls to bill collectors. she's grateful for the made food but embarrassed she needs a hand out. >> i burst into tears on the phone with one of my creditors because i had to beg for forgiveness for the first time my life. >> reporter: but when you're hungry those feelings get put to the side. >> it's really hpful for such a great chef to be opening something for feds becausee no really thinks about the feds too oroften. >> rr: they'll be here for

about in the weather department today. we have a refreeze tonight. weave some rain and snow tomorrow night, maybe some delays on friday, guys. we have a big weekendndtorm systemhen the coldest air we've felt a year moves in sunday night for your martin luther king, jr. day. first up we're going to start with our temperatures. right now we're above freezing and well above freezing, at 43 in washington. for the most part we're around 41 degrees today. tonight v ty similar the last two nights. once we hit 5:00 p.m. when t sun goedown, we're going to see things freeze back up pretty quickly, so you wanto be cautious for icy spots out there tomorrow morning. now, tomorrow aigh of 38 degrees. so if you thought today was chilly with the cooler temper tomorrow is going to feel cold. check this out. rain and snow moves in as early as 4:00, 5:00 p.m. but that's west of the.c. metro area.

write off the wintery mix, snow an ice just yet. this storm system is still evolving. the biggest ccerns are goi to be when everything starts saturday and ends on sunday and especially wn it ends on sunday with the potential of some ice and snow in the forecast. so you mig want to plan to just hunker down at home again this sunday. and then sunday night into monday arctic air moves in, so anything that is wet turns to ice for sure as we track feels like temperatures sunday and throughout the day on monday anging from about 10:00 below to 10:00 above zero. it will be dangerously cold out there your your martin luther king, jr. day. tomorrow we're tracking a highf temperatureout 38 degrees. as we see the storm system moving in tomorrow we're going to have some maybe rain and snow. but temperatures cool at 5:00 p.m., like we've been seeing all week, so that changes over t snow heret 7:00 p.m. that could mean some accumulating snow on area roant polly ending as a rain-snow mix once again.
