the morning commute. >> goodness gracious, this is going to be a ughy. we'll get through this morning, how about that, first part. start in northwest, 17th street remains closed between c and e streets unfortunately. we hav a roadway compromised. there's a giant pothole in the roadway. you willin the toll road eastbound between the park and ride and the rusten park ewway. working there, the right lane is getting by but i believe that's in the clearing stages and the crews wrapped up on the dulles greenway. had been getting by and that should be wrapped up. >> jack, thank you. 5:02. new details this morning about the standoff at nova fairfax ho ital. police tell us one person has died. officers were called just before p.m. last night for report of a man with a gun. police say that man was a 54-year-old patient who armed and holed up in a hospital room. officers tried to negotiate with him but he refused to come out.

a s.w.a.t. team was eventually called ihe patient shot himself and died. his name has not been released. no one elseas hurt. today marks day 33 of the partial government shutdown. as mon two of theshutdown arrives, so does a second pay peri with no paycheck for 800,000 federal workers who were furloughed tight now. t means the financial pressure is growing on these families as they make hard choices about what to give up and whatpa to so far, workers have missed out on $5.7 billion in salary. that does not include contractors. that comes to about $7,600 p furloughed employee or roughly 8% of their annual salaries. president trump has signed a bill thatk guarantees bac pay for furloughede workers onc the government reopens. all eyes are on congress and the whiteouse today in hopes they'll soon reach a deal. the senate is expected to vote on two competing billstomorrow. the president's plan allows undocumented immigrants including dreamers to stay in

the u.s. for threeyears. that plan also includes funding for the border wall. the second bill proposed by democrats is a short-term spending bill that would reopen the government until february th. it does not include money for a wall. mpmeanwhile, president t still plans to deliver his state of the union speech next week to a joint session of congress. that despite letters from house speaker nancyos p requesting he delay the speech because of the shutdown. the white house has requested a walk-through in aicipation of the january 29th address. as lawmakers debaterosals to reopen the government financial pressure is mounting on federal some are being forced to make some heart breaking choices. >> for one maryland woma 33 days without a paycheck is forcing her to choose between her life or her family's home. she has stage 2 cancer. she's worked for the government for 11 years. her husband is a postal worker, but as another friday without a paycheck inches closer, she has to decide whether to continue her chemo treatments or pay the

are covered. yesterday the national park service sent out crews and despite the partial government shutdown ourameras captured drivers spilling over into lanes of oncoming traffic to avoid holes that wereown to the rebar, but much of that has been fixed. park services had to restock their ready made asphalt in order to patch up the work. i should add that there are still a few more holes that need to be filled. crews will head back down today to get thatdone. back to you. >> nicole, thank you. 5:08 right now. frigid tempetures froze a sprinkler system at a montgunery coty school. it will not keep kids out of the classroom today, though. the frozen system turned into this, busted pipes sent weather all through parts of wheaten high school. that black-looking water, it's not sewage but sediment building

up in seinkler system. the school says the air quality was tested and no problems reported there, though. school is open today. this morning a teen isre vering after being stabbed inside a d.c. public charter school. this happened insid the bathroom at e.l. hans in northwest. this was yesterday morning. the victim is 15 years old. police arrested a 17-year-old. students we spoke with tell us they were scared and confused. >>n just put usckdown for two hours, no idea what's going on. and people were scared.ke they were oh, i don't know what to do. >> letters went out to the parents after that stabbing. the letter reads in part, we take the saf oy of students very seriously. we are saddened by this event, and we know this singular incident is not reflective of our community and our values. a measure to decriminalize ir evasion on metro is one step closer to becoming law.nc d.c. voted for the first time to override a veto for mayor muriel bowser. people cheat by jumping over the gate to avoid paying the fair.

this morning in northern virginia communities are coming together after a terrible crash killed a warren county high school cheerleader. she was thrown from an suv it crashed in maryland on sunday. the 15-year-old was on her way to a cheering competition in delaware. is morning, her friends say they just can't believe she's gone. >> my best friend. she was just like a sister to me. and it's hard to believe that she's gone. >> the crash left three other cheerleaders hurt. new details thisorning on the two saudi sisters from virginia found dead in the dson river in new york last year. the medical examiner now says that the 23-year-old and ied by -old sisters suicide. investigators say the sistefr travelle a shelter in virginia to new york last fall. hey believe the sisters duct taped themselves together before going into the river. detectives say the two were desperate not to return to saudi arabia. it's now 5:36.
