cafeteria athe columbia heights education campus on 16th street in northwest. d these volunteers will both count and direct services to people they encounter. it crafts a framework that helped make the district a 7%n reductio in overall homelessness last year. d.c. mayor muriel bowser noticed the timelessness of the event. >> o government shutdown showed them we are only one -- not all, but my of us are one, two, three paychecks away from needing help. >> reporter: miles away at an apartment complex in frfax county, virginia, kenny perez, a 47-year-old homeless man, is believed to have died from posure to cold on monday. he was found in the laundry room of aui blding where he had once lived. >> i asked one of the officers, she said a homeless guy passed away inside the laundry room and instantly i knew it was key. >> reporter: and we noted that two of the d were elderly

women found outside assisted living filities in fairfax county. the centers for disease control enyrs are the highest percentage of people who die from hypothermia. >> jkie, thank you. a new plea tonight from five form homeland security secretaries to fund the department of homeland security. >> most of them are republicans and one of them includes a top trump official who just left the white house.>> leon harris standing by at our live desk with what it could mean f some furloughed federal workers. leon? >> well, doreen, jim, if president trump and congress approve funding for the department of homeland security, it would mean some of the 800,000 furloughed workers would get paid, including 42,000 who are in the u.s. coast guard. they, by the way, are the onlch brf the military not getting paid right now. those who signed that letter that was sent to the president include formerrump white house chief of staff john kelly, tom

crime. >> reporter: shots fired at suntrustank. one call to police came from the suspect. >> the suspect called our dispatch center and said he had entered the bank and began shooting. ter: when police arriv they secured the scene and began negotiating with the suspect and called in a tactical unit to recover victims and take the suspect into custody. >> we were sorry to learn that we have at least five victims, people who were senselessly murdered as a result o hi act. >> reporter: according to police, the suspect surrounded peacefully. >> the gentleman that's been taken into custody as a result of this is a gentleman by the name of zefen zaver. >> the names of the victims have not been released. police did not mention a possible motive. >> the people of florida stand with the com here in light of this tragic circumstance. >> reporter: police say the investigation remains active. dan sheneman, nbc news. a teenager is fighting for his life tonight after getting shot in the head iide arince
