legion bridge. k to yo >> jack, thank you. 6:02 now. the partial government shutdown entered its 34th day. tomorrow,800,000 federal workers will mark another payday without a paycheck. >> we learned the gridlock is impacting the state of the union address. corey smith joins us at the liv desk withe details. good morning. >>pr good morning. ident trump state of the union address scheduled for next tuesday night. now we don'thenowit will happen. just after 11:00 last night, the president firsg off two twe announcing he will put the speech on hold. in a week long showdown, the speaker of the house nancy pelosi. in the tweet he wrote as the shutdown was goingon nancy pelosi asked me to give the state of the yoourn address. i agreed. she then changed her mind. thiss herprerogative. will do the address when the shut doub isover. he didn't want to look for another venue for the speech. he cited the history of the

chambe and tradition. >> suggested to president trump because of the shutdown and security reasons, he should hold off on delivering the address. for a time, it appeared he was still trying to give the speech. he cou select another venue to do so. while there is no president for the state of the union invitations being rescinded, the address has been delayed before. president reagan did it after the challenger. disast corey, thank you. today the senate will vote on two billseoon the government. both pieces of legislation remain unclear. however, there is growing support to find funding for the department of homeland security. in aare move, five former homeland security secretaries signed letter requesting congress and the president do everything in their power to reach a compromise. those who signed a letter include former white house shief ff john kelly. tom ridge, michael chertoff,

janet napolitano and jeh johnson. the letter says dhs employees protectpuhe traveling ic, investigate and counterterrorism and goes on to say that those workers should not have to rely on the charitable generosity of others for assistance in feeding families a paying their bills. today's bills are partisan. aye bi calls for undocumented immigrants to st in the country for three more years and funding for a border wall. the democratic senate bill would reopen the government for three weeks but would not include funding for the wall. later this mornin tsa workers at reagan national airport willss expre frustrations to senato mark warner and tim kaine. tsa and a traffic controllers without pay and many have taken to calling out sick. as a result, some airports have had to close security checkpoints because there haven't been enough tsa screeners on the b. that has led to long lines and delays. the community outreach to help furloughed federal workers in the area is growing.

students at west springfield high school held a potluck dinner for anybody impacted by the shutdown. the dinner was arranged by the school's conservate club and the young democrats club. student organizers say it is a bipartisan effort to help because the shutdown impacts the whole community. >> we roach out to- we're very keen on donating because they've felt the effects. we're all in thi together. we're updating our app with resources for furloughed federal workers each day. check the nbc washington app to findou out wherean get help and where you can give help. search shutdown. it's 6:05 now. metro may be losing huge amounts of money during the shutdown. isn't affecting plans to reevaluate service hours. the board wil hear some plans today that could keep the trains running longer. phere are four proposals. one would khe hours as they are. another would return service

hours to the pre-2016 hours when trains were running until midnight during the week. there are two other proposals that offer less significant time changes. oubut they wld expand weekend service and trains running later during the week. theil plansbe presented at a board meeting later it mornin ichael cohen postponed his congressional testimony and he's blaming thepr ident. he was set for next month. cohen's lawyer cited verbal attacks on the cohen family from both president trump and his lawyer, rudy giuliani. the president publicly implied that cohen's father-in-law should be investigated. giulianient further and said the father-in-law may have ties to organized crime. cohen was in his words threatened by the truth. we're following breaking news nowt 6:06. police are investigating a shooting near the southern avenuero station. this happened late last. >> justin finch arrived on the
