ehing this morning and going up until the t the sun goes down this evening. the steadiest of the snow will be late, mid to late morning through the early parts of the afternoon. it will be all-snow. temperatures are way belowfr zing this morning. and we will stay in the 20s all day. already, quite a bit of snow, out towards morganto and frost berg. some flurries are around the d.c. metro area. nothing heavy yet but the ground is cold, cold. everything that fls will stick with great efficiency. the winter weather advisory is for the washington metroa a and everything north and west. north of 66 and north of route 50 is the bestes cha to see snow today. how much snow? well, the european model says an inch to half an inch around town. 2 inches in northern maryland. that's where we are. we will call it a coating to a few spo the local metroar . 2 to 3 inches in maryland and

more out in the mountains of west virginia, where six inches or more is a possibility. a closer look at the weekend and the warm-up, coming up. jack taylor, good morning. >> a structure fire on river road at chapelro . river road remains closed until the salt and sand trucks can get out and deice the roadway. obviously, the water ran down on river road and iced over. you'll find 66eastbound. we had one spin out along the left side of the roadway, as yoa ap the interchange infa irfax. and a box truck broke down, in the right lane. temperature closures through the overnight, northbound on i-295, moving between malcolm x and suitland parkway. occasional they will stop traffic. as we get into the rush hour, the last closure i will be and they will open the roadway and we'll have no delays soo from oxen cove to the 11th street bridge. it's 5:02. we have breaking news i

montgomery county. dozensf firefighters have b on at the scethis house fire potomac for hours now. >> megan mcgrath has the latest on what happened here megan? guys, this : well, was a tough fire to put out. it was intense for a while. i'm going to step out of the way. there were 75 a firefighter the scene. the bulk of the fire has been put out. you can see we still have smoldering sections. extensive damage here. a portion of this home collapsed. the broroof is gone. a difficult situation for firefighters because of the extremely cold temperatures. everything they put on this fire, all the water they sprayed, it's just frozen rock-solid at this point. we don't know the cause of this fire. but maybes say they believe the homeowner was not here. they believe the house was

vacant and firefighters went off of that assumption here. we don't believe there are he injures on t scene but a lot of damage. k we don'tw the cause of the fire. mentioningrth but this time of year, very active inerms of fires. we had quite a fewst day. m d one of those was caused by an electrical probth a space heater. people are reminded to be careful. something elswore worth mention because we have road closures in this area. we're on chapel road. that's where the fire is. the water supply, though, is all the way out on river road, which is quite a stretch from here. we have a lg hose line stretching all the way to river that's why river road is also closed between norton and falls road. and we hav a tremendous amount of icing here on the scene. everything they sprayed has frozen. they have brought in salt truckm

frederic county,virginia, frederick county, maryland, leesburg, arlington, prince george's county, all under the advisory that goes into the middle and later parts of the afternoon. everythinging will fall at snow. a way below freezing. everything in northern virginia in the mid teens. it's not an issue of whether we'll be cold enough. temperatures in the 20s today. any chances forcculation is in the highlighted counties. and radar is picking up light snow in western maryland and northwest west virginia. we've seen the roads are already frozen. everything that falls will stick very, very effectively. future weather, light chances of snow here. mit will continuet of the day long. most of the precipitation is on the northern half of our viewing area.

>> reporter: we can see some crews on the scene but others are starting to lee. they are rolling back the response here on the scene of this fire on chapel road. this w an intense blaze here. at onepoint, they had 75 firefighters battling the flames here. this is a brick house. look at the video here. large brick home. one section of the house collapsed. gone.oof is neighbors informed the fire not believe e did the homeowner was home. no injuries here. but a lot of damage. we do not know the cause of this fire. we're still awaiting word on that. this is the latest of several fires we've seen in the region in the last 24o 48 hours. the wintertime, especially when the temperatures get down very low, we starto see an increase, an uptick in fire

three people wside the home. they were okay.r there's ang fire on falls church on collins springs road. eight people had to be rescued from balconies. all of thet are okay. ab people are now without a home. no word on what caused those house fires. one case appears to have started from a space heater. investigators say a space heater had been left running, causing an electrical fire in gemeantown. mont county fire officials say it is important to give space heaters space. >> this is video from a fire in glen burnie. firefighters are working to find out what aused this deadly fire. the polar vortex that is being felt, not just in our area, but around the country. more than 230 million americans are facing extreme, sometimes record cold, as the polar vortex continues. look at chicago.it it 23 below zero yesterday. people who went outside had to cover nearly every inch of skin.
