he scene of this house fire ur potomac for now. >> megan mcgrath has the latest on what happened here. megan? >> reporter: well, yeah. we have seen most of the crewse lehe scene here, the fire crews. this fire has been knocked out. it's notven smoldering at this point. but the big i question here what caused it. this is an intse blaze that happened just after midnight. ok at the video here. we're told that investigators will be returning to the scene. they will go through the house and try to figure out to see what happens through the fire. there's a large home of the structure. much of the roof is asne. a tough fire tofight. not with the firefighters arriving on the scene, they were told by a neigh that nobody was inside. this is not an occupied dwelling at the time. but no injuries, which is the good news here.

roads looking? >> reporter: we're on 270 southbound. and the roads so r, so good. wide-open spaces. no slick spots so fa and there's plow trucks. there's some research about the science of keeping the streets clear in the event of snow and ings like that. maryland d.o.t. and the state highway administration finding that rock salt is less effective bew 20 degrees. they also find that brine mixture, the salt/water combo, is effective until six degrees below zero. and you have magnesium chloride, a super melter i this situation. they find it's effective in temperatures all the way to 26 degrees belo zero. that's used a lot over in northern and western maryland as we look out this morning, back live on 270. as you can e, it is looking clear. a lot of questions now about that snow coming our way in just a matter of hours or, perhaps, woner. and what thatl do to the

trump adviser, roger stone. earlier this week, the 66-year-old pled not guilty to seven counts, including lying to cong.ss and witness tampering stone is the sixth trump ci assoate to be charged in connection with robert mueller's investigation into russian meddling into the 2016 election. prosecutors announced yesthaday that thed seized hard drives, apple icloud accounts, e-mail accounts and financial records from stone's home. the evidence can be discussed at today's status hearing. stone has insisted he has done nothing wrong. it's two weeks until another possible government shutdown. and president trump is slamming a group negotiating a deal on border security. democrats leased their starting points yesterday. th includes more money tha white house requested for customs and border proteion. it has less money than requested for i.c.e. and there's no mention of money for a border wall. >> there's no wall, it doesn't work. if they don't have a wall, i don't want to waste my time

reading what they have. >> there's not going to be wall money in the legislation. >> the president said would wait to see if congress can come up with an agreemente the february 15th deadline, before he decides to declare a national emergency at the southern border. the president is praisg border patrol agents for making the largest fentanyl bust in or hi federal authorities seized 254 pounds of that dangerous drug. it was discovered inside a secret compartment in a truck trying to come through a border checkpoint in arizona over the weend. fentanyl is a synthetic opioid 100-times more powerfu heroin. it was responsible for 30,000 overdose deaths in 2017. metro riders say they will find somewherelse to park after a rash of break-ins over the 7th avenue station. there was broken glass all over. a dozen cars were broken into on wednesday. metro has stepped up patrols ats its parking crime has dropped since 2017.

montgomery county that jack just mentioned. here's a view from the ground now.fi dozens of firrs battle the house fire in potomac fire officials say this home is on chapel road, off of river. ro neighbors tell fire officials they don't think anyone was inside the home. no word on what started this fire. our megan mcgrath will be on the scene in about 15 minutes. firefighters have responded to a rashl la of fires in th 24 hours. this is video of a home in herndon. three people were inside the home. they were okay. a ere's another big fire on falls church jusw hours later. eight people had to be rescued from balconies. all of them are okay. about 50 people are now without a home. no word on what caused those house fires. one case appears to have started from a space heater. igators say a space heat had been left running, causing an electrical fire in
