bizarre press conference. and he addressed it in a strange way. he said that you'd have to ask those whose job it is to do background research on campaigns, to look in and see t what informatire may be that could cause a problem for that person to be elected. in or it is not clear why this didn't come up. but interesting though, theth governor i press conference yesterday did say that he knows through sondhand who is responsible for putting that photo forward. and heays that individual has an agenda. he did not go into detail beyond that. meantime there have been several folks of course leadership, you have senate leaders on the democratic side and of course ngthe republican side calor the resignation, but you also had residents o vginia who say that they want their vote back. folks roo stood in executive mansion yesterday before that press conference and after that press conference sentially saying the press conference did nothing to sway them its way and they want governor ralph northam to step down. take a listen. >> a black man stands behind

now to the latest in a tragedy in prince george's county. five children killed after a violent car crash in bowie. and now their families are ving to copeith this sudden and devastating loss. state police say dominique taylor was driving her car packed with kids along crain highway yesterday morning. she is the mother of two of the leungest victims. she suddenly off the road, struck several trees and then spun across a snow covered field. five kids were thrown out of the car. they range in age from as young as 5 to 15 years old. >> every collisione have where

but otherhan that, we're not looking -- it wi be a long super bowl party. you've never been to one of my super bowl rties. listen, we're dry today, a few showers late monday as i said, and then tuesday looking good, more rain coming in late wednday and then through t day thursday. but nothing out there right now. jay doesn't think that they will open up the dome down there at rcedes-benz, i think a lot of that rain will be out in the early afternoon setp ng us for dry conditions for the super bowl. but again, they are develomed. by the time we get tednesday, most of the day dry, back in the 40s, but some rain will continue through most of the day on thursday. a few showers lingering into friday, but look at these temperatures, despite the rain, warm front lifting through the area. so even though we're on wednesday, we have 50s on thursday, back in the 60s possibly on friday. back in forcomes the weekend and then a rain/snow mix the following monday and

tuesday. winter is not done yet. >> so partially heating up. and of course so is our politics. time yesterday, it seemed all but certain that virginia governor would be stepping down. >> but then ralph northam hecided not to step down. he says thaas not in the racist picture. chuck todd here to talk to us live about all of this. what is your take? >> well, he made things worse saturday. i mean that is the bottom line. 10 or 2 years ago, i think he might have been able to apologize his way out of but the big picture is democrats have zero tolerance now. they have condemned donald trump on his behavior towards win and is motives when it comes to race. so democrats, if they don't want to look like hypocrites t need have zero tolerance when policing themselves. and i think with ralph northam,

i understand where it is coming from, and i have to say, i took -- there is something he said yesterday that sort of really irked me when he tri t to clait he came from a time and era referring to 1984 that somehow that was -- somehow it was -- many people were ignorant of that. but he was the son of a judge and a schoolteacher, number one. that same year the first prominent african-american to run for president was happening, at the time jesse jackson. and the following year the state of virginia elected doug wilder as the first african-american eutenant governor in that state's history. so it just came across as disingenuo disingenuous. if it was 1964, maybe. but this is 1984. >> noto mention the fact that he also said that he did paint his face blackme in the year but for a different incident. >> and by t way a congressman whole be on the show pointed out

that governnortham added that i hard to get it off as if he ahead experience. so this really -- you could tell that is what really came across asoffensive. >> makes you wonder if he is trying to get ahead of maybe another photofa sng. who knows. but real quick, we're two weeks away from a potential government shutdown. president trump saying that he will declare a natynal emergeo get that funding for his wall. and then we have the state of the union spatch. an we expect? >> well, i think that the national emergency is something that the president will continue dangle. it could be overly divisive. so my guess is that he ratchets it back a little bit because i think they want to sound like he is reaching across the aisle. but obviously nobody wants the shutdown. i think the national emergency is the only way that he could somehow declare not- that an opportunity for victory in the
