arstre eett froesm my father. my father was high out of his mind. was running down the street, 83rd street in chicago from my father with my wamom. like, is this what everyone's life was about? it was something in me, i can't do this. my life isn't this. i want to be the smartest. it want to have straight as. >> my parents were bot they divorced early. my mom lived in a section of brooklyn calledew eastork around brownsville. that was around the height of the crack era. >> what was it like growing up in brooklyn? >> even though my mom did the best she could, trying to shield us from the best she could. the uzis would go off. i would say what's that? she'd say that's just fire crackers. inside the home, education was stressed at the highest level possible. again, my high school was one of the roughest neighborhoods in the city. >> i was raised by both my

parents. my mom was very heavily christian, christianity. my dad was a hard working guy. my dad had a third grade education, but h worked timeless hours to provide for a family of six. i srted seeing crime. i started seeing drugs. >> got sucked in. >> i got sucked in. one minute i was in church, going to church with my parents. at the end of theng night, t changed. i started entering the street life. >> brought me to start selling drugs. there was this cousin of mine. on october 13, 1996 he was murdered. he was shot ninetimes. i felt like who was going to die next? me. that brought sn aense that i had to make a change. >> in 1998 the three met as students in new orleans. >> you formed a studying >> we formed that bond. we said, you know what, we're
