covered earlier this week. d.c. pice now say they made an arrest in connection with a brazen bus stop shooting. said mer newsom officers arrested him with assault and ssession of a firearm. the chief called the crime a brazen act of violence in this city. >> and this arrest t comes as district takes a new approach toward cracking down on violent crime. hundreds of local gun cases will now be tried in federal court. but not everyone thinks that's such a good idea. >> reporter: crime scenes like this across the a district a too common. stood with mayor bowser and chief announcing the feds will take a gater part in fighting crim violent crime in d.c.

45 haguerstown, 50 in frederick, and richmond right now coming in at 71 degrees. warm air as we push down to the south a little bit. here's today's system. this is rrow's storm making its way up, and notice where the from theoming from, south again. so that's going to push us up into the upper 50s to near 60 across our region, too. could give us a chance of a show tomorrow, but most of us stay on the dry side. 71 in richmond. you think there's a somewhere in there, even back towards the west and pittsburgh on the warmer side, and we actually see a pretty good day. staying cloudy, maybe some sun in the afternoon. 62 degrees, though, warmer with a shower possible. most of your day on your be dry, but you may want to keep the umbrella handy just in case. however, if you don't need it tomorrow or if you don't bring it, you may not even need not bad tomorrow. friday is the day.

nbc news senior political editor mark murray is goi to help us unpack all this and sort it. >> first, let's take an lis to something the president said last night how a border wall c impactme in el paso, texas. >> immediately upon its building with a powerful barrier in place el paso is one of the safest cities in our country. >> mark, the president says crime fell in el paso due to its rder fence. what do the facts say about that? >> yeah, the data doesn'tack that up. it actually showed the crime is already falling in el paso and other b cities well before that wall was constructed in 09 and 2008. in fact, after the wall was being constructed crime actually went up just briefly in p elo. to me, the biggest story of all has to do with just the overall

crime rate situation in a cy like el paso, texas. it is one of the safes large cities in the country. its crime rate is much lower than other major metropolitan areas. but whe u you end hearing the rhetoric from the president of all of this crime on the uf. side the u.s.-mexico border in relation to the wall, the facts just aren't tre to back up the president. >> let's get some ofsihe big surp moments there last night, the president applauding yhe record number of women in congress, and t thanked him and made a bit of their own.of 102 women now, but 89 of them are democrats. overwhelmingumr there. what's actually happened to the share of women in the gop right >> it act went down for llw? republicans. there are now more women in the u.s. housef representatives, but they are disproportionately democratic rather than republican. and one of the reasons why has to do with president trump. there was just a slew of

who ranional candidates in the mid-term elections fired up because of trump andis presidency, and we saw that play out in the mid-term elections where a lot of these women ended up winning keyongressional seats across the country including invirginia. >> speaking of virginia, mark, three of virginia's top democrats are mired in controversy right now. what do you think this means for the party's future in the ste? and what do you think it could mean in 2020? >> one it is a big mess for democrats. it's a big mess for presidential candidates who are going to have to be asked questions about not only the governor, lieutenant governor and now attorney general, all democrats in virginia. but to me almost every day and hour that goes by seems the democrats, the status yo, you still might have ral northam as governor. you would end up having justice fairfax as lieutenant governor, mark herring as attorney general, because the threat of all three of them end up signing the next to line in

mold pollen as well. thankfully they're both coming in low, weeds and grasses still absent. here's some things to know as we'reeeing these warmer temperatures. what we're dealing with right now are the early flowering trees. now, the tree pollen levels relate pretty much directlyo warm temperatures. as the temperatures warm up we see these early flowering trees release pollen. now, when cold weather returns ehat pollen is goingo b on hold. so we're going to see ups and downs february through march. so is not like the pollen is out and now it's going to be here to stay. it's going to go up and down. and i do have to give credit to susan, a crobiologist for all of this fantastic information. looking back l at thet two years, the blue bar here is going to be an our average tree pollen. no 2018 was the third warmest february on record in washington. and look at that spike there in february 2017 was the warmest d.february on rec and you can see that spike there
