president d republicans on their work on border security but referred to the democrats as quote, the radical left and voiced disfaction with the bill. kristen welker joins us from the white house with more. how might this play out today? > reporter: a couple different ways. good morning, aaron and eun to both of you with that second potential government shutdown looming for friday. lawmakers are moving forward with the deal you mentioned to avert it. overnight president trump saying he's been briefed on the bipartisan border deal. yesterday the president said he was not happy but despite his disappointment he signaled he doesn't want another shutdown. he also hinted he may take an executoe action t redirect money to pay for the wall. now, it's a little bit of a shift in strategy after threatening for so long to declare a national emergency if he didn't get enough funding. on capitol hill, top lawmakers on both sides of urging the president to take the deal, but some of the president's conservative all

developing in new york city this morning, a police detective has died. >> he and another officer were shot last night. cory smiths at the live desk with details. cory, what happened? >> this was tragicaccident. we learned that the detective killed last night was shot by fellow officers heres what we know about that slain officer. his name is brian simonson, 42 years d, a 19 year veteran of the nypd. police say this happened as officers confrted a robbery suspect inside a cell phone store in queens. the officers who were wearing plainlothes a the time entered the store and saw the suspect emerge from the back pointingtht what appeared to be a ndgun. police commissioner later said the robbery suspect was carrying a fake gun. officers did not know that at the time, though. and with the suspect walking toward them, the officers started shooting. as far as that suspect is concerned, officials say he's a brooklyn resident and a career criminal. he was shot but is expected to be okay. nbc's ronllen will have much more on this investigation next on "today." aaron, eun, back to you? >> cory virginia lawmakers want to

make sure the roads in the commonwealth are just as safe as the roads in d.c. and maryland. >> a new distracted driving law is trying to dothust . news 4 justin finch has more on this new law. justin? >> reporter: eun, aaron, good morning. the hope here is tha it will make the roads safer by keeping drivers safer behind the wheel here. this van would prohibit the use of mobile devicesthhile behind wheel on a highway or roadway. however, at a stopped light or stop sign, drivers would be free to glance down at their phone for a second for gps or other poses here. as you mentioned, maryland, d.c. have similar laos on the books already, but here in virginia your first would be $125, your second offense $250. now this has a f more hurdles to pass through first, but should this law pass, it would go on to the books next year, january 1 and the hope is that by cracking down on mobile phone use while behind the wheel will

tomorrow. as a result, warmer. highs in the 50s for tomorrow. ashat area of storminess pulls away and you get a bubble of high pressure in here tomorrow on into early friday. in fact, friday, mostly cloudy, and there's a chance for a sprinkle or two of rain here on friday, but the big story with friday will be the warmth near 60 degrees. thatths one o complicating factors for our saturday snow chance. an opportunity for some snow moves in here d the daylight hours on saturday. that's strike number warm out ahead of it. coming during the day. that's strike two. strike three, well, we can't call it out just yet, but there is at least a chance for an accumulating snow on saturday. and another chance for what will probably be m rain on sunday but could mix in with a little snow. so saturday has the best chance to accumulate snow. only one model is really allre that aive the european model says 3 to 5 inches. i'm not sold on those amounts just yet, but our chances of getting acculating snow on saturday are higher today than
