they didn't know. okay. what would you do if you're in that set of circumstances? >> first off, it's hard not to feel guilty. i went throug something similar. at the same time one of the most important things you can do with somebody who is a type one diabetic is help them control their sugars. that's everything for their help. them control p their sugars. >> mom was not going to slow down on the red wine. ha is not going to happen. >> but she did live -- that's my understanding, she did a ldg pretty complication-free life. >> she was 73.k >> she t very good of herself. she ate well. she exercised. i think if you're a parent out there and yyp have one diabetes, i would just say please take good care of yourself. because we got her for 74 years and she was with her grandki and got to see them be born. she worked really hard. >> no problem with high blood pressure, eyesight, obesity,

some of the things you read about. >> shead the diabetes which increase the risk factor of cardiovascular disease. thes best thing two simple questions. go to the doctor and say what is my risk of heart disease and the second question is what do i need to do about that. >> afterhe died -- i don't know if you did . i did a gnarly echo scan with contrast. they have one in new york. it was a very itextensive. gives you a number of plaque in your if i had known this, i probably would have demanded she do it. would that hav been preventive. >> potentially could have if it ago.ened years the particular message here is for young diabetics to take a look at that ear b onause it takes its toll over if years. it's one of the things that builds up. if you canet it when you're young. your mother had essentially no other risk factors, lived a verf healthy otherwise. that's an important thing, keep the risk factors under control and keep an eye on heart disease. >> quickly before we go, because told me that

she was 7 when she was diagnosed. she's been givg herself insulin every day for like 67 years. does that much insulin every day make your blood thicker, make your heart work harder? >> not necessarily. it's not the insulin but what she does to her blood sugars. she gives herse a shot, blood sugars go down. we have technology, artificial pancreas technology looking at sugarsing you insulin. that's coming down the pipeline. that's going to be something that's really beneficial and keep the blood sugars under contro which is essential. >> cars and tha ouquinn, you reall stted a nversation. i have to say the two of you and your relationship is like one of mauer mom's best legacies. >> she would -- had she known at quinn and her family were going to move and we'd be neighbors, she would have jumped off the cliff. owshe's smiling because of the events that have happened
