deadly work placeou shooting ide of chicago. one person dead there and several police officers have been injured. that's where we start with erika gonzez standing by at the live desk. what do we know at this hour? >> t scene is aurora, illinois. that w we have confirmed at least one person has died and that four oicers were injured in this shooting at a manufacturing plant. the gunman was apprehended. these are live chopper pictures now comg into news4 there on the ground in what was -- what is a very large manufacturing plant there in aurora,noilli, about an hour west of chicago. we can tell you that there we're seeing some police tape that's around, maybe five vehicles there in the parking lot ofurhis manufag plant. we're told that at least threee people w sent to one of the area hospitals and two others were sent to a different hospital. we -- the last word that we got from police was that they we going to be doing a press

news4. thank you,om i. this is the latest in a series of shootings across ourcity. it is a serious problem. no easy fixes. last night a 12-year-old shot in northeast. that boy was not tintended target. news4's mark segraves spoke to the police chief today, who is fed up and frustrated. mark? >> reporter: yeah, he's not the only one. i talked to mayor bowser, she's equally as frustrated a as tonight that boy rains in critical condition at children's hospital. the latest innoct child shot in the district fighting for his life. >> anyone that's going to get out in of a car in a neighborhood like thatnd spray bullets without any care for where they're going is something we have to put atop to. >> reporter: this was the scene thursday night behind pond street, another neighborhood littered with shell indicatings and police evidence markers, surrounded by crime tape.

case murders and led to some civil rights groups are coming to the man charged with trying to kill a police officer. the man claims he's a victim of police brutality. but advocates are calling the sea deal unjust. they he was falsely accused in the first place. tracee wilkins is working this story. one you will only see on news4. >> reporter: it's hard to see from this convenience store security camera but there's a prince george's county police officer hanging out of the driver's window of the suv. the officer stopped the suv because of a broken taillight and there was a robbery in the immediate vicinity in the arrest report the officer said he dove into the window because he feed the driver had a gun, he said theriver accelerated while he was hanging onto the window. the family of the driver say the driver was being beaten by the

supreme court looks at the national emergencies act. seems to me he was admitting it sas a political emergency. for political rease had to do it but he didn't make the case for national security reasons too this. you talk to some legal experts you think this is the thing he's told -- because he's trying to move money. they basical overturned an obama executive order that tried to expand protections for the parents of the dreamers. he wasn't tryingov to m money and they said that was an overreach. he's trying to move money, which happened twicek, in one of these emergencies ever. and that was following so i think he's got a tough case to make. but i understand why he made the political decision. this is a typical trump move. this is about preventing short-term pain.

and killing his wife in a case that rocked a fairfax communit it took more than two years to solv d >> reporteid culver is live outside police headquarters in fairfaxo expla how investigators found their suspect. david, what did you learn about this? >> rr: i can tell you laszlo pentek started his day inside his fairfax homehe tonight going to sleep in jail. it was around 1:00 p.m. that fairfax county police s.w.a.t. team members surrounded h home and they took laszlo pentek into custody. described as a beloved hockey mom,onna pentek's murder stunned neighbors. for two years the case sat unsolved until tonight. >> tonight i announce that justice is served in an active 2017 homicide investigation. >> reporter: in a late day press nference, fairfax count police announcing an arrest laszlo pentek charged withis

police here made mention of a close call that was sparked by social media. they say a neighbor was out there taking picture and sharing it immediately on social media of the s.w.a.t. team surrounding pentek's home. they had to move in quickly. it's a rinder in this age, when we can push it out,t show live, they're asking hold off doing it. you can record it just don't put it out right away. >> you can put everyone in danger that way. good advice. thank you david. we have newly released records that show d.c. council member trayon white collected a 5,000 settlement from the d.c. police just after he took office. he sued police in 2014 alleging police brutality at scott macfarlane reports, that case finally closed. the council leaders sayre they ever notified.

>> reporter: records just released to the news4 i team nformationfreedom of act show council member white received $75,000 from the d.c. government in 2017 part of a settlement of a lawsuit he filed against d.c. police. you can see the payout is dated august 2017. he took office reesenting ward 8 in january 2017. he sued d.c. alleging he soughted by a police officer who was directing traffic. it happened where he was setting up for the annual marion berry turkey drive. d.c. disputed facts in the case but reached the settlement three years later..c the council chairman and the secretary of the council tell the t i teamy were not notified about this and say d.c. council ruleseq don'tre them to be notified about this. mr. white declined request to answer questions and to comment on our story. in the news room, scott macfarlaneews4.

nbc 4 responds to a maryland woman's complaint and discoveries an error impacting fe income thousands of people in our region. >> susan hogan working for you with what you need to know about a letter threatening to garnish your wages. >> the u.s. treasury department sent letters to about 7,500 retirees in the state of maryland warning them that part of that federal pensions were going to be withheld to pay off debts the owe to the state. a woman named deb bra sent us hepy. it says a debt has been referred to the u.s. department of

treasury and goes on to say up to 25%f her payment, in this case her pension, will be withheld to pay that debt. deborah told us she owes the state money but she's on a payment plan and in good standing. she wasn't sure why she would receive this letter. she said when she contacted the maryland'sol compr's office they didn't know anything about the letter. so she called news4 responds we got right to work and we were able t get some answers. so the maryland comptroller's office told us theyno didn't the letter had been sent out until we contacted them. ey say federal pensions will not be garnished. they say a miscommunication between the comptroller's office and the treasury deparent is to blame for those letters going out. some states do choose to garnish federal pensions but maryland will not do this. if you are a federal retiree in maryland and you received one of

shooting at a manufacturing plant there in aurora, illinois. six oicers werenjured in this. the call came in around 3:30 our time, police esponded within four minutes. when they arrived on the scene, we are told by the police chief, two officers entered, were immediately fired upon. another two arrived subsequently for backup, they too we fir upon. and this continued to unfold until officers there on the scene were able to apphend the gunman. again, we are told that five people inside what we now know is a 29,000 square foot plant, so this is a massive piece o property. five people in there, innocent victims, gunned down. here is now the aurora police chief with details on who the shooter is. >> and when they located the , offendhey engaged in gun fire with him, ultimately
