archdiocese hopes the vatican's depsion serves to h the healing process for survivors and those who have experienced disappointment or disillusionment because of what former ahop mccarrick has done. end quote. now the announcement comes as the world's bishops prepare to ther in rome next week for a conference on sexual abuse within the churc the decisio signed off on by pope francis himself. dave culverh is here w closer look on what led up to this dismissal. >> we should point out, this dismissal is huge. th is a very loud message to other catholic church leaders. that msage pretty straightforward, no one is immune. he was a massive presence not only in thechurch, but also among politicians and world leaders sought out his advice and counsel. tonight mccarrick is living in a religious retirement residence in kansas and he is not either a father, he is simply theater.

with the manhattan district attorney and the new jersey eneral.y i'm told their investigation goes beyond mccarrick and looks at the wider issue of sexual abuse within the church. they are looking at ways around any potential statute of limitations as you point out, cluding looking at the federal level, if they could prove he crossed state lines to commit abuses james alleged and his attorney tells me they want to get ahold of mccarrick's church personnel file. siey're pushing hard for that. and it is pe james and other victims could pursue civil chges against mccarrick and/or the church. so there is more t dcome. >>initely a story we'll be hearing a lot more about if the coming days. we y appreciatr focus on this for us and diving into this with us. we appreciate your time. >> i'll stay on it. mccarrick's successor cardinal donald wuerl is the interim archbishop resigned last year following a grand jury
