storm team 4 meteorologist lauryn rickets is here o tell us more about that. what do you say, lauryn? >> i do say a bit of a wintry mix could be headed for t uss afternoon and then as we get into a wednesday we could see a wintry mix, some snow and changing into a wintry mix and changing over to rain. i know a lot o people know about wednesday but let's get through today. it's a beautiful morning out there right nownd things are about to change. we could see a little light precipitation, light stuff early this mornin before noon, but really the main event is coming in later on this afternoon, and i had to add this light precip. i thought we'd be too dry and i'll show you what we mean here in a sec. mainly a rainor event us into this evening and higher elevations could see freezing rain and that's north and west of d.c. at those higher elevations north and west of d.c. we could have slick travel later tnight and into early tomorrow morning. mainly this will be a rain event later on this afternoon through tonight. that's when we'll start to see

it move. in this little piece of energy right here, it's starting to move tthe north and east. that's where we could actually see some light precipitation spreading into the area possibly in the form of slight snow flakes and ao maybe a little freezing rain, but, again, a lot of this is not falling. it's evaporating before it even hits the ground, the radar picture looks a little more ominous than it actually is. this will be moving to the east at, andl talk about then we'll also talk about all of this coming our way because it's coming our w for this afternoon and this evening. we'll start it off for you and talk about wednesday coming up in 15 minutes. >> all right, lauryn, we'ee you for that. thanks very much. the catholic church meanwhile is rocked by an explosive announcement from the vatican. >> todore mccarri a once beloved leader in the catholic church revered here in our area has been dismissed from the priesthood just a day after ava can tribunal defrocked the former cardinal, we're getting more reaction. the once powerful archbishop of washington had been an influential player for the

church. vatican officials found h guilty of soliciting sex in the confessional and for sexual crimes against adults and minors. >> both abuse and its cover-up can no longer be tolerated andt different treatment for bishops who have committed or covered up abuse in fact represents a form of clergyism that is no longer acceptable. >> mccarrick is the highest profile church figure to be relieved of priestly duties in modern times. meanwhile, reaction has been pouring in aer the vatican's bombshell announcement. >> certainly has. many catholics in our are of course, getting ready to go to church today wit that mccarrick schedule fresh on our mind and our derrick ward joins us liv from st. matthews cathedral with more and we've been talking to people who simply can't belief haulis. >> yeah, indeed. this was actually his home church here, so we talked to a

lot of folks and a lot of them don't want to go on cameras, but to me privately they did express some relief now that this has turned a corner and a bit of outrage once details of what theodore mccarrick was charged with have come forward. as you htrd from t sound, rome is now looking at how the church moved forward as is the local archdiocese, a statement they put out yesterday said that they hope that this helps us with the healing and perhaps toys some sort of comfort by disillusions and reactions from the crch. it also sparked a protest yesterday outside the vatican embassy and one person that we spoke to there was talking aboun more circumspect about this and she said that, you know, this is about howur the ch moves forward. take a listen. >> well, i feel sorry for him basically. i'm really sad that this should itve happened after a long career. not that i want any revenge or anything. i pray for him and i hope that

read about it in this nbc washington app. >> staying on top of a developing story out of anne arundel county. people arere ewing surveillance footage after someone was shot at arundel mills mall around 7:30 last night. a man walked into an area hospital with a gunshot wound to his torso. he is expected to be okay. poli say the incident started with an argument between two groups of people, and they say it was a targeted incident, not random. shoot verse posittiely ided that person and are searching for them. >> we have a grim update now. police need your help finding the gunman in what has turned into a fatal shooting in d.c. this was the scene aer the shooting here. it happened in an alley on harry thomas way not far from wendy's circle in northeast in broad daylight.ea 20old matthew washington was shot and taken to the hospital where he later died. authorities are offering a

$25,000 rd for anyone that provides information that leads to an arrest. >> right now the search is on for two armed men who robbed a jewelry store in montgomery county. tacoma park police t say men walked into silver spring jewelry on university bou ovard. bothe men pulled out their mons, pointed them at ploys and stole a larget of cash and jewelry, but it doesn't stop there. on their way out the robbers bumped into two other men and stole their car. police are asking anyone who has information to give them a call. >> wef have a bit shocking twist here in that alleged hate crime agast actor jussie smollett. tibodies news is rep that chicago police are looking into whether the "empire" star actually paid the two brothers who were questioned and later released without charges to stage this attack. smollett claims on j uary 29th he was attacked and beaten in downtown chicago as he walked to get food. police s they found no surveillance video of that attack but they it be to look tore it, and they also say

forecast and snow. some sl st,e freezing rain. i think the kids are going to enjoin this forecast and i think the teachers may enjoy it even more for wednesday, but let's talk about what's going to go o for the next 24 hours. sunshine out there right now. take aas look. thisind of just formed over the last hour or so and right around petersburg. a lot of this is evaporating before it hit the ground. we are looking at some snow and freezing rain and this could move to theat east. going on in our area, our atmosphere is really dry so a lot, again in, evan rates before it hits the ground. anything we do see moving into the area between now and the noon hour, early afternoon is going to be really light. really light. really main precipitation is still down here and starting to move int southwestern, virginia. all of that is advancing into our area north and east for lfte thisnoon and this evening. mainly a rain event but north and west of d.c t for counties shaded in purple, that's where you could actually e the higher elevations some freezing rain, and that's where we could have some issues. we're not weather alert because main lit higher elevations

within these counties are over 800 feet areoing to see the freezing rain. it's very few and far between. we have a very hilly terrain here in the area. current temperatures right now, freezing mark, jus along the i-81 corridor. mid tody else in th upper 30s. i expect rain overnight with some patchy ice possible, so a lot of this moves in later on tonight so we could have a little area of drizzle and light stuff between now and about 1:00, 2:00, but then a lot of this is falling after late afternoon and into the evening. falling as rain and then we -- we're not even pick up on some of the freezing rain aspect of it, but mainly a rain event for us. th as we g into tomorrow morning we'll start moving out of here and we're looking at drier conditions for tuesday. we've got rain and snow on the this is not a bed.
