screen, 36 degrees here in d.c. but onc starts snowing, temperatures will start to drop. we talked about the snow chances and we'll have that befor noon but as we head into the middle part of the day right around luncime into the early afternoon, that's when we can start to s o this changer to some ice and then ice on top of the snow that we were talking so, again, north and west of d.c., possibly up to a quarter inch of ice. scattered power outages and around the d.c. metro areas and to the west of i-95, we could have a coating. low chances fod.c., southern d.c. and south and east mainly because a lot of that will turn to rain. you could have a few slick spots out there especially with snow and small, small amounts of ice. slick travel once the flakes start falling down. we're already seein that in fredericksburg where chuck was talking about and the grass has already turned white. icy mess and then slushy mess tonight. so, the roads are going to be a

littlee iffy o that snow starts falling. talk about the roadways already right now. we turn to melis mollet. >> lauryn and i have bee talking about where to see these things happen. in virginia north of washington drive, you can sort of see it. little bit of wetness onhe roadway and very tiny flakes falling there. that is the situation this morning as things start to really move in here. in the district, northbound 295 inbound to 11th street bridge and as we zoom out and you can setway looks nice and clear and dry at this point and so does everything here up through the maryland area.ig virginia now is where we are seeing a lot of that snow falling here this morning. taking a look at 270. right now 70 down and it is nice and open and get you there in 27 minutes and dry, as well. aaron? >> melissa, thank you. storm team 4 has been tracking todas winter storm for several days. many local areas have been

paying attention, of course. spent yesterday treating the roads and snow will make things slick and add the rain and maybe some ice and the problems can only get worse after owthat. right we're already beginning to see snow falling. >> megan mcgth joi us live from downtown fredericksburg with details on what she's seeing. hey, megan. >> we have been seeing the snow come down for about an hour here w. if you look down on the ground, tu can see i is accumulating. light cumulation on the grassy areas. if you look at the sidewalk that i'm standin. on this has apparently been tr ted. you can see this is just wet and then we can pan over here. this ist williams stree in sburg and youeri can see that we have wet pavement. i don't know if you can make out in this lighting, but a lot of salt that is laid down on the road. you can see it was pretreated and all that treatment is doing exactly what it is supposed to do when thi snow hits the ground, it is just melting it at this point. i would say that we hav a moderate snowfall at this point and some pretty big flakes mixed

in, but we not seeing any problems out there on the roads, not as of yet. but, of course, as we continue to see the snow accumulate, we are expecting to see slick spots and sidewalks and things that haven't been treated could get pretty slippery out there. an hour with the snow here and it's actually quite pretty out here, you guys. ofs is kind of the best time a snow because it's pretty but not causing pblems yet. back to you. >> it does look nice. thank you, man mcgrath. local power companies are also prepared for today's snow storm. if you don't feel like you are, you stillave time to get ready if you lose power at home, check on your loved ones and the elderly to make sure they're okay. make sure you turn on water to t trickl prevent pipes from freezing. double check your cell phones and make sure they're fully charged and keep a flashlight on hand. power crews aren't the only

ones getting ready for the storm. road crews have been very busy treating highways and roadways. >> justin finch is ive in northern virginia with a look at the roads. justin, where are you? what do you see? >> i'm on route 17 right now going north and looking at the roadway here, it was as if someone turned on a light stch and t snow began falling down. take a look out here. you can see that snow is falling right now and if you look clely there on the roadway, you can see it is accumulating some black spots are due to tire tracks inf front us right now live. the pretreatment in this area yesterday. crews working overnight to get these roads ready for this event. we are seeing rightow the beginning of this snowfall. we o know thatvdot, as well as virginia state police have been asking everyo, if they can, to stay home during the brunt of this storm so that means crews can get out here and begin to

says the same storm system that caused this i the one we will feel the impact of. you saw whatnd justin megan saw coming down. wichita, kansas, they're talki a big range in snowfall from two inches to nearly a foot. ten inches in some spots. it caused quite a mess out there. mounded snow and even folks having to deal with it as they head out for a walk and schools there are closed. this is the most snow they experienced in aut three years. you can see the blanket in other parts of ourountry whi indicates travel may be an issue for those of you today. molette green will have a look at how this is impacting flights in our area in about ten minutes. new 4z is wos 4 is working and download the nbc washington app. y>> pat collins will tel what you need to do to win an official pat collins sw stick. ten minutes now after the

argument. an argument may have triggered t deadly and run in northwest d.c. two weeks ago. one person is facing murder charges. daniel was hit crossing fourth street and t street and later died. the driver morris harley argued with him just before he hit him. harley is charged wh first degree murder. a triple shooting in the concern has residents and police asking the community for help in finding the suects. the drive-by shooting happened yesterday afternoon in in southeast. you can see a car covered in bulletholes. a 19-year-old is in critical condition. two other victims are expected to be okay. in a separate shooting, about 1e mi away from there on otanton road, police found a 17-year-old sh. he is expected to survive. no arrests have been made in either shooting. we turn now to the ongoing crisis in the commonwealth. virginia republican house speaker kirk cox says lawmakers should come togethe decide how to address the sexual orsault allegations against the

welcome back. 5:14. it is a weather alert day here on news 4 today. the d.c. rion bracingitself for wintry weather filled with snow, ice and rain. we're seeing some snow falling heavily in virginia already. schools and government offices have closed in advance of this storm. you can see all thatnformation running on the bottom of your screen and on the nbc washington app. we're also monitoring the situation in the skies ahead of th snow headi our way. this is a live look at ig aware.com. plenty of flights but some may be surprised when they arrive at the airport inur area. molette green is live at reagan tional at the number of flights that are canceled and delayed and some flights getting around this storm,right, molette. >> the early morningso flights. me folks are coming to the airport early and finding that they are in luck. they are checking the departure board. many folks told me they had

temperatures in the mid-30s that's where we're staying the first part of theday. the first part of the day, that's when you want to get the kids outside if they want to go enjoy the sw or enjoy the snow yourself because after lunchtime that's when itn turns into icy mess and then later on through the middle part of the afternoon and into dinnertime, that's when it turns into a slushy mess. hrough the e snow morning and could have areas of dryness around there for the morning hours. but for the most part, go sledding. get the kids out early and playing in the snow because, as lunchtime,n for that's when we'll start to see it switch over to ice and stay inside after that. our snowfall forecast in great shape over the last couple of days. four to seven inches to the grth and west of d.c. before that ices here. two to four really along the i- corridor from baltimore to washington and down through centra virginia and one to three for down through the northern neck and southern maryland. now, ast far as w we're

looking at, here comes the snow. snow for the first part of thee day could heavy at times. inch of snow in some places and then that warm air starts to push in from the west. that starts is to change everything from sleet. spotty, freezing rain as we head into the afternoon, as well. this is where we get the ice accumulation. the warm air switches out and could have decentamounts of rain here and there and it startt starts to taper off tomorrow and believes we canmoet sunshine ow and that will help melthi ever. ice accumulation up to a quart of an inch and ang coa and little less to the south and east. mainly the rain event. temperatures stay steady and go up by day break tomorrow. and sunshine later tomorrow afternoon and a lot of this will be melted at tt poin friday upper 40s and look at

winter storm warnings remain in place for d.c. metro area and points north and west. st. mary's county anded icksburg and along the northern neck there. will continue to be all snow here during the morning. you can see on storm team 4 radar. there's the advancing line of snowflakes now. we will start getting pictures from our weather watches and already had pictures from down into southryland where we have already started to see the the ground get coated. am i supposed to be standing over he? temperatures now just observe t the freezing mark. temperatures have fallen to at or below the freezing mark. so, plan on a snowy morning. it should be all snow coming down between now and noontime. thereafter, warmer air alof will make this change back over to a wintry mix and eventually all over to the form of rain. total accumulations, most of the d.c. metro area will be i sthat three inch range. probably closer to three for the

southern suburbs and probably closer to five or t six for northern suburbs but plan on a three to six inch amount bore it changes over to an ugly mix. unfortunately, the mix means, l lauryn that snowball makin will be best done before lunchtime. >> we will have some of that mixes in and that's not going to be fun at all and then later on throughout the afternoon, that's when we're going tee start to really that slushy mess get in here. listen, h nobody school today. when i didn't have school the night before, i would sleep all the way until noon. if you sleep until noon and those kids want to go play in the snow, they may miss their opportunity because this ice is coming midday. north and wt of d.c., a uarter inch of ice and could have scattered powtages and just west of i-95 that is where we will have a coating o top of the snow. that, chuck just showed you. that map, the winter storm warning pretty much for everybody with winte weather advisories down to the south and

what are you seeing now?he >> guys. we're starting to see that accumulation. if you look over here at the grassy area,ou can see we've got an accumulation of snow. it's not anything major, but everything is coated with white and quite beattiful. am noticing is that it is starting to get slippery. they have treated the roads and things are starting to get a little slick. i'll make myay back to the live truck and we'll start to drive and show you what the roal conditions looe. actually, not terribly bad. a little bit of slush starting to accumulation there because it's been coming down for an hour and a half now. let's take a live look a that road there. you can see the conditions that we're deang with here not a lot of traffic out right now. that's always good news we haveen a ton of road crews out there this morning. they are loaded withsalt. many of them were standing by the side of the roadway just kind of lined up waiting. at this point, not a lot they

ing west and take look at this snow. it is really coming down out here. really picked up in just the past couple minutes here. as i look here on the ground, what is standing out to me is that the snow is accumulating on some of the streets out here. ites you a sense of how cold is out here and how quickly this ndowfall is accumulating on the ground, the grass the roads, as well here. news. have seen good salt trucks out here working out here patrolling and also clearing where they can. but thiss why residents are being asked to stay at home. so, that they can o get here and get these roads clear ahead of this snowfalls well as part two of this storm that we know will include more of thatin r e and ice. i am driving around and seeing a lot of this snow fall pretty quickly and stack up quickly on the streets, as well, guys. back inside to you. >> all right, justin, you and

snow i'm surprised at the observation at national airport hasn't seen i yet. blue is all snow and it stays mostly, if not entirely snow through noontime. but by 1:00 o 2:00 in the afternoon, wow. look at that quick change over. some of thoseright spots of yellow there could be sleet or a little bit of freezing rain. wesel keep a c eye on that. and then rain moves in overnight. again, tperatures have fallen below freezing where the precipitation has started. expect that trend to continue. ten-day forecast. stuck in the low 30s all day today. but notice holding above freezing overnight tonight. mid-50s tomorrow. so, no mattert w we get today, all gone by sun down tomorrow and sunday after some morning raindrops, a gusty southwest wind will bring us into the 60s. parts of central virginia, melissa mollet, could be 70 on sunday. >> that looks crazy when you're looking at this right now. chopper 4 over the top of the
