it? >> no, it was never very casual. >> reporter: he said first it was marijuana that controlled his life. >> eventually it got to the point where i was smoking befwhi woke up, before i went to bed. >> reporter: then harder drugs like opioids. the turning point came seven years ago racing down i-270. >> we flipped the car three times in the middle of rush hour. >> reporter: when he crashed en route to d.c. to buy more drugs. surviving that accident pushed him to seek help. >> i'm here for a reason, you know, and i went and asked my mother for help. >> reporter: addiction counselor angela caldwell says marijuana dependency is something she often sees. >> look, you're not going to find a lot of people that are going to die from marijuana overdose, but it does not discount the effects. >> reporter: the news 4 i-team analyzed years of data from the virginia and maryland departments of health. we found thousands of people admitted to programs citing marijuana as the main reason. we found thousands more who had

cited marijuana as one of the reasons. the largest increase nationwide among women, 18 to 25 years old. in our area it's women 31 to 40. not surprising, says caldwell, as states move to decriminalize marijuana, making it more available. >> it's just been such a part of their culture. it's so socially acceptable. >> it's hard to convince the young people this is trouble. >> it's harmful. >> it's harmful. >> they're not trying to hear that. >> reporter: harmful and costly. in virginia alone we found spending on state-supported treatment programs for drugs reached $155 million last year. caldwell says the argument that marijuana can be addictive is difficult to make to patients and even some in the substance abuse treatment world. >> if it's monopolizing your time, attention and distracting you from life or disrupting you from life then it's an addiction. >> then it's an addiction. >> reporter: national research shows those who begin smoking as teens or smoke daily are more likely to need treatment. medical experts testifying
