crash. now, a black history month o lesson gonibly wrong. parents and the naacp are outraged. >> teachers at a loudon county elementary schstructed their students to pretend to be slaves during a gym class. justin finch has more on the story. justin? >> reporter: you can imagine there's a lot of questions right now. a lot of concern and pain, too, about this so-called slavery game taught during black history month, of all we have now learned that the principal here at madison trust elementary is working with parents and the naacp to make sure that something lik never happens again. now, in a note home to parents earlier this month, the principal here, david stewart, tried to explain what happened here. and al, apologize, as well, saying this involved students in the third,nd fourth fifth grades, during a p.e. class here weeks news 4 has since learned that

students were directed by teachers to play a game with a theme, centering on slavery. the students were sent to endure an obstacle course. and one of the students is african-american. now, this followed a lesson about the underground ilroad. anhe loudon naacp president iths she has been in talks parents here at madison's trust, as well as the principal. >> principal, to be honest with the you, mr. stewart, is doing a good a job as anybody can do, given trc stances. he understands the gravity of it. he understands the racism behind it. >> she goes s on to that, as well. this will take some time to work through, for not onl the students but also parents, as well, and the greater community. the principal here, principal stewart, says going forward, he wants s ts to create a cultura

force to tackle issues like these before they come up like this. >> justin, thank you. lawyers for the coast guard office accused of planning a terror attack say the case is being blown out of proportion. fter his first court appearance, no new charges. christopher hasson faces gun ang drug c right now. the fbi arrested him after the coast guard found suspicious rkinternet searchs on his computer. he had made quotes onlineng descriimself as a white nationalist and saying he wanted to kill almost every last pern on earth. prosecutors say hasson made a list of targets that included presidential candidates, tv news democrats and hosts. agents found steroids in his silver spring home, in a search, along with a massive stockpile of weapons and ammo. >> the number and force of the weapons recovered from mr. hasson's residence in this case, coupled with his writings,

appear to reflect a threat to the safety of our community. >> hasson is being kept in jail. prosecutors have two weeks toio file more s charges or the judge says she will consider releasing him. this morning, "empire" star jussie smollett is out on bond and facing a firestorm of criticism, after being charged with staging a hate crime attaf. against hims smollett was surrounded by photographs, reporters and security yesterday. poce say the actor paid tw men to stage an attack against him. they said that smollett sent himself a threatening letter. smollett was upset about his w salary andted publicity. now, the chief fears it could cause rm to legitimate victims who need help. smollett said little in court. he maintains he was thim of a racist attack. he is due back in court in three weeks.> won't hear much from roger stone anymore.

a federal judge banned him from speaking about his case. the move came after stone postei ure on instagram showing that judge with a target next to her face. stone apologized for what he called his owntupidity. the judge told him, quote, this is not baseball. you don't get a third chance. if stone breaks the gag order, the judge will put him in jail. he pleaded not guilty to multicharges, handed down by robert mueller's team.le muelcould soon submit his final report in the 2016 election any day. here's what will happen. that report will explain who he prosecuted and why. once attorney general william barr receives the report, he is required to send a sum bry to congre not necessarily the full report. if the report contains allegations of potenti impeachable offenses, legal scholars argue that the justice department would havto pass the full details to congress. as for what barr will release to

the public, it's not clear. some of mueller's findings may be based on classified material or secret grand jury testimony that cannot be released by law. today, house democrats are expected to begin the process to try and overturn president trump's national emergency declaration. they will file a resolution to terminate the president's effort to reallocate money along the border. it will start to a process that will lead to a vote next month. the re pass and the senate will take it up. when the vote happens, republicans will have to choose between angering the people they represent and angering the president. if the resolution makes it to president's desk, he is certain to veto it. >> republican leaders in the virginia general assembly say they have a plan to investigate the sexual assaultio alleg against lieutenant governor justin fairfax. but they say democrats refu to sign off. democrats say, that's not true. the flare-up comes with just one day left in the general assembly. two women accusairfax of sexually assaulting themrs yea

you're watching news 4 today. welcome back. 5:15. if you had to pay a tax onga drinks like soda, would you still buy them? >> a new study finds consumption of sugary drinks dropped months after burke ller california, imposed a soda tax. they found residents drank 50% fewer sugary drinks than they did before the law was passed. berkeley is the first u.s. city to pass a soda tax. we know that traffic in our area is horrendous. tit a driver in new york took their frusts to a dangerous level. take a look at what happened in brooklyn. the driver here is hopping the curb to get around slow traffic. that small -- the small children getting off of the school bus e.are right in his path th police have since found the car from this video. this is just part of what seems

to be a largt trend of drivers not obeying the stop signs on scol busses. eight children were killed getting off of the bus in the 17-'18 school year. there was a survey in 2018 that found 84,000 instances of drivers passing buses in one day. two skiers and a dog a lucky to be alive after being stranded on a mountain twoin da california. this is the view that rescuers had when they found the group. they survived the freezing weather by making a snow cav. both skiers had cold-related injuries but are expected to be okay. they must be experts. building a snow cave required some preparation and understanding how to survive. >> you have to know something. this week's snowstorm came and went. but the cold weather isn't
