resistant depression. now new drug expected to e proved by the fda as soon as today could provw hope for those patients. here with me dr. drew ramsey, a psychiatrist at columbia university. dr. ramsey, kboorgood morning t. this is potentially a very big deal for folks who are suffering from specifically this treatment resistant depression. >> those are folks who don't get better. they've tried two different classes or medicationsheir depression, and their symptoms haven't gone into full remission. this is a reasonable population, 30 t to 5ra0%ditional oftreatment. those are folks with treatment resistant depression. >> this new treatment, tell us about that. >> breakrough, that's the word everyone keeps using. it's a breakthrough. the reason it's agh breakthr is that it works on a different system. we're used to it t influencing serotonin system, with medications like oc. this works on a different brain system. it causes rapid owth. the medication w're talking

about is called ketamine t. it's given by iv. a very safe older medication been around since the 1970s. itin so fast ac this is a brain cell right here. the reason we wanted to shce this brain is so folks can see what happens. you get ketamine, and this is a brain cell, a neuron. right away it begins to sprout. when we say fast acting, it's sprouting toa new connections. that happens in about an hour. the other thing happens fast is symptoms get better. usually traditional antidepressants we're talking four to six weeks. here we're talking an hourdm >> and it'sistered using a s nav nasal spray. >> the new version is is an s ketamine nasal spray. right now it's ivketamine as an infusion. you get it at the doctor's office in a very controlled setting. >> party drug? >> u'rehinking about special k. it has been a drug ofbuse.

depression can get better on a ketamine treatment. weaklso hope it's going to other treatments like psycho therapy work together because we get that brain into grow mode where it's making new connections. >> i think it's important to note here the difference between someoneho is experiencing one of those lows, one of those slumps that wello through and depression. like how can you tell the difference between the two? >> such a g question. let's talk about the science of depression. this is more than just feelingta down or blue. depression is a medical condition.you're going t e aav low mood but ler than usual. you'll notice sleep changes, appetite changes and some folks get very irritable andon edge. those are all signs you could have depression, and you want to stlk to someone about it. that's the f barrier we see. before we get to ketamine, the s people aren't talking and getting treatment. we just saw ben affleck being so open about h treatment and h struggle with alcoholism, that's the kind of thing we want to see more of. >> dr. ramsey, thank you so much. you used the word breakthrough. >> breakthrough. >> this is signis cant?
