a worker trapped 120 feet up on this radio tower in d.c. wereitter cold winds, they whipping out here, folks. the man was up for nearly three hours. temperatures in the 30s that actually felt like the teens. our shomari stone has a look now at thec dramati rescue and what crews were most concerned about. >> reporter: chopper 4 captures video of a worker stuck 120 feet up a radio transmission tower in northwest d.c. for about three hours, suffering fro hypothermia hypothermia. >> i was just settingh a h point to safely lower him down. he had been exposed to t elements for quite a bit the of radio tow around 10:00 wednesday morning behind a police station on georgia enue. 3 1/2 hours later, he realized

he was stuck and called for help. the temperature in the 30s. lthe wind chn the teens. >> the cold impacted himnough ere he could not return along the same path that he initially traveled and felt he needed assistance. >> reporter: in order for the man to get down on his own, he would have had to climbed up more than 100 feet, cro a catwalk and climb down more than 200 feet. >> we used the approach from below, which was to put an aerial ladder up. that was eventually successful. >> reporter: the worker was able to ther himself firefighter who safely placed him on the ladder. they both climbed d tn. firefighted me it took three hours to rescue the man because they were methodical and careful. >> it was a matter of -- primarily a matter ofty sa >> reporter: fortunately the worker did not need to go to a hospital. >> he was in great spirits. you know, we communicated, y, knack and forth. he was very involved in his own rescue. >>eporter: in northwest d.c., shomari stone, news 4.

>> that was incredible. those cold outside making for a rough few hours for this man in fairfax county as well. new tonight, night visionideo shows fairfax one, the fairfax county police department's helicopter team rescuing a hiker in a wooded area along potomac river in mclean. this man had been hveing for l hours and in fact broke his leg in the process. his sister was worried as thees temperat dropped. the pilot and the crew along with some high technology helped officers and the medics find him in the woods. firefighters used an atv to pull him out of there. >> a new tonight, man is dead after being hit by a minivin after cro rhode island avenue. hit last night near frankn street here in northeast d.c. he was not the arosswalk. you can see a shoe left in the middle of the road. williams t diedoday at the hospital. police are looking for the driver of a gray minivan with a black bike rack on top. tonight we are learningou

troubling hateful graffiti found inside a bethesda elementary school. a swastika found yesterday and to make it worse, there was alse a c word written next to it. the school tells it doesn't know how many students viewet but they have removed it from the bathroom there. in a statement the principal says, quote, this does not reflect the valuesol of your scnd will not be ta tolerated. the school is having students sign out to use the bathroom now and they're checking that bathroom ery power to prevent this from happening. quiz sho icon ale trebek opened up his cancer decision.
