correspondent miguel almaguer in christ church, new zealand. >> reporter: boom. t good morning. the first of the mosques attacked is behind me. investigators areieng together what happened. this as memorials are popping up across this nation. more tears than bloodshed. we're also learning more about the suspect. an alleged killer in court, charged with murder in the deadliest mass shooting in new zealand history. the main suspect blurr here under new zealand law but identified by u.s. and australian sources as 28-year-old brenton tarrant, making a hand signal associated with white nationalism. authorities believe he stormed two mosques in the southern city of christchurch friday, live streaming the rampage. this footagerom inside the attacker's car moments before gunning down men, women, and children, killing at least 49

geoff bennett has more on that. >> reporter: good morning. president trump has been clear in condemning the new zealand attacks but while expressing support for those affected by the shooting the president down played the threats of those white nationalisms, snationalisf being involved. some think president trump has a responsibility to moderate his language, given the rise of movements around the world. president trump sharing his condolences friday following the terror and tragedy in new zealand. >> these sacred places of worship were turned into scenes of evil killing. you've all been seeing what went on. it is a horrible, horrible thing. >> reporter: authorities say the gunman behind at least one of qu the m shootings left behind a 74-page hate-filled manifesto, describing himself as a white tionalist who hates immigrants. the gunman also mentioned president trump in a single reference, criticizing the president as a policymaker while

congressman beto o'rourke said publicly he'd want to remove walls at theborder. that appears to be what the president was referencing there. chuck schumer, the leader of democrats, on this windy morning here at the white house, said democrats would persist in trying to uphold the constitution. they will again vote not only in the house but perhaps in the senate to try tooverride that veto. as it stands right now, it appears that there are not sufficient votes to erride the president's veto. >> kelly, thank you. philip rutger is white house bureau chief for the "post." >> the republican party stood by president trump through many a ontra versi, but now they've blocked his national emergency. how is this from members of his own party? >> it is significant and it is a raree by these members of

the republican conference and the senatede against pre trump. it's so much more significant because it is on hre signa issue of immigration. clearly, these republicans have been uncomfortable with theid prt's expansive use of utive power here. they were willing to defy him. it wasn't just the republicans we're usedo defying trump, like mitt romney of utah, but there were others, as well. marco rubio of florida. roy blunt of missouri. across the spectrum, these republicans said this oks not , and they were trying to defend their constitutional powers in the congress. >> phil, want to turn your focus to what a lot of the world is watching right w, what took place, the terrible tragedy in new zealand. the president again yesterday down played the threat of white nationalism. he was asked whether it is rising, and he said, i really don't think so. the facts show something very different. the souern poverty law center says there is a 50% increase last year alone in whiteti alist groups here in the united states. i guess the simple question is, wh does the president continue

todown plaplay or dismiss white nationalism, and is there anybody, anybo on his staff, anybody in the white house who is urging him to be more forceful in his condemnation? >> yeah, it is an important issue. again and again, we've seen from president trump an unwillingness to confront the rise in white nationalism, which is occurring all around the world and hereten the ustates. you saw it a couple of years ago with the deadly white supremacist attk in charlottesville, virginia, where the president said there were good people ones both s of that protest event. you know, people inside the white house, his spokespeople, have historically been much more forceful in condemning these attacks and condemning white nationalism and white supremacy than the president himself. he saw it again yesterday in the oval office. >> phil, thanks very yoch. >> thank we turn now to the growing threat in the midwest.
