shot him and where. p the victim and his father were at of a news 4 interview just last year. and it got a lot of reaction about life after prison. news 4's jackie bensen has their story. >> s i meetmany people that are in a position to even help me succeed in life becse they already met my father prior to that, so they know the blood linend they know the dedication that we have to helping the community. >> reporter: this is not how it was supposed t end. on father's day last year, news 4 viewers heard the inspiring story of eric weaver and his son eric jr mirror images of each other, yet it was their first's fathay together. eric jr. was born after his father, then 18 years old, went to prison. tw decades behindars for his involvement in a dispute over street drug turf in southeastha washington resulted in a homicide. by the time ericle sr.

prison, his son was behind bars. ut i waited so many years to actually be here with him. >> reporter: less than a year after that interview, eric jr. is gone. just after midnight he was dropped off at prince george's hospital center, dying from a gun shot wound. the person who brought him there fled. police don't even know where the shooting happened. >> it's a total shock. >> reporter: tina johnson is eric jr.'s maternal aunt. she says her sister is too devastated to speak about the loss of her son, but the family wahe world to know about his efforts to move forward in the rig>> way. you have those surreal moments like, i'm never going to see him again. i'm ner going to hear his voice again, you know, and it hurts, it hurts. >> reporter: i spoke to eric weaver sr. by phone. he told me i don't know how i'm

going to get throughs. jackie bensen, news 4. a group of high school students in bethesda are opening up for the first time about being targets of some very public judgement by their classmates. last week we told you a group of boys were punished for ranking girls by their looks at bethesda chevy chase high school. the list of 18 girls was spread all over social media and they're telling the "today" show's morgan radford it's the ultimate betrayal. >> i did not want to see the list when i first heard about it, didn't want to believe i was included on t list, but as the day progressed it became thef talke school and i knew i had to see it in order to have i guess the correct view on the situation, but after seeing the list, nothing was the me. >> tune in tomorrow to hear how these students were inspired by the me too movement and why they are apeaking outinst this kind of sexism in high schools. several d.c. blocks are back

open tonight after a drive-by shooting that had neighborhoods closed off at the height of the evening rush. police now trying to figure out who shot a man on a dirt bike along good hope road in southeast. news 4's shomari stone spoke with nghbors who are extremely shanch shaken up over it tonight. >> reporter: good eveningre d.c. policenvestigating what led up to this shooting. the man who was shot is at a nearby as police gathered information and evidence, crime scene tape stretched adoss good hope r in southeast. at least six shell casings covered the roadway and a dirt bike rest on the sidewalk. police sources tell me according to the preliminary investigation, a 34-year-old man, who we won't identify, was riding the dirt bike on good hope road thisenvening. su someone in a dark colored car opened fire shooting him in the hip. joyce saucier lived nearby. >> the gunfire -- see how nervous i am. i had to come outi here.

decision up to the president's attorney general. the white house firing back at comey. >> i think c it'sar that director comey's been confused on a lot of things over the lasp of years. >> reporter: comey says ultimately the investigation has been a good thing. >> itd, establis hope to all people no matter on the spraum spectrum, that ths not corrupt, but an honest group of people trying to find out what is >>true. eporter: defending the department he once led. blayne alexander, nbc news, washington. a mistrial today in the case of a man who says he killed a virginia store manager because he thought the victim was werewolf. prosecutors say it was murder. the jury was deadlocke over the case. he viciously slashed and beat bradford jackson to death in old town alexandria last year, but the defense argued he was insane at the time of the attack. prosecutors and the victim's friends didn't buy it.

they'll decide next week whether to retry the case or not. well, tomorrow we'll learn the fate of a man iolved in another high-profile murder case in virginia. darwin martinez-torres will be sentenced for killing a teenager. he's facing life behs.d b prosecutors say he attacked this woman while she was out walking with a group of friends. this happened during ramadan back in6. you may remember the story. he raped and killed her and the case drew nationa and international attention. her loved ones believe she wasse targeted bec of her muslim faith. growing controversy continues after all charges are dropped against jussie smollett. today chicago police released a new police report after a freedom of information request. in it, detectives detail the connection between the actor and the brothers police say he hired to orchestrate a hate crime against. himse cpd says a judge barred them from releasing any additional evidence. today the country's -- excuse me, the county's top prosecutor who recused herself from the

case insists that smollett did not get special treatment in his deal. prosecutors dropped 16 felony counts in return for two days of community service and $10,000 in court fees. >> mr. smollett was afforded t same opportunity that anyone in cook county who had a nonviolent offede and the require background would be able to get. >> reporter: smollett is also cing a federal probeor f allegedly mailing himself a death threat, but tonight nbc news has learned that case is also unraveling and may result in no criminal charges. well, it turns out your environmentally friendly efforts may be backfiring when it comes to recycling in prince william county. the county is putting out new guidelines on certain items like glass. county leadersay the cost of transport and recycle glass has more than doubled the last couple of months. d to that the increased standards from china and india where most recyclables a purchased, all of that makes glass not worth the cost of

recycling, but county officials say most of the items you recycle will be accepted. >> right now if you focus on newspapers, cardboard, aluminum and steel cans and plastic ttles and jugs, it's going to get recycled. >> now you can look for some of these purple bins. that's where you can drop off any glass youo want get recycled. the rules are different depending upon where you live. just search "recycling" in the nbc washington app to learn about the rules where you live relief is finally on the way for drivers who take the bw parkway. potholes have been causing a mess. in a rare move the national park service is launching an emergency repair operation ts weekend. so the parkway's going to be closed southbound between maryland route197 and maryland route 198 from 7:30 in the evening friday night until 5:00 a.m. saturday. the same stretch is going to be closed northbound. that one's going to gorom 7:30 in the evening saturday to 5:00 a.m. on sunday.
