behind that was just moved by a tow truck. that's the car that crashed into the tanker truck. nobody was injured in that accident but, of cose, the ripple effect is what we have now. there's about 8,000 gallons of fuel in that truck. as you can see here, a new nker truck has been brought in. they cleared out all the lanes of traffic along the beltway so that they could bring this empty tanker truck in. they're going to drive it up next to the overturned truck and off load the 85 00 gallons of fuel once that's completed, they can up right that truck and move it out of here. the cause of the crash is still under investigation. nobody was injured. but the ripple effect is not just on the beltwa we tried to get here from northwest d.c., clara barton ay within allar of these roads were parking lots

trying to get here. if you know anyone d from this area or has to get to an airport tonight they areo goingve a tough, tough go of it. let's look at chopper 4, video from earlier today, this is the scene from the air. again, theipple effect from this was just widespread hroughout all the arteries leading to and from the american legion bridge and the beltway. of course, the beltway closed down. one side of the beltway closed down right w. that the latest from here at the american legion bridge. back to you guys in the studio. >> thank you, mark. you have to wonder how did that happen? i'm sure the accident investigators are out there trying to figure that out. again, as mark said, this is having a massive impact across the region. all of theoads surrounding that area are jammed. let's te a look from brad continuing our coverage up in chopper 4. brad, what does the frustration look like from your vantage
5:02 pm
point? >> reporter: wendy, i just can't imagine how frustrating it's got to be for a lot of drivers making their way from virginia to maryland via the american legion bridge. let's look at this fromctbove. this t-trailer just about went down the embankment, that's a steep grade and t jersey wall basically kept him from falling into that depth. there was also s other vehicles involved. a couple were towed away buts there ne behind the tractor-trailer there. this could have been a muche woituation with the closure point south of the american legion bridge it's going to cause a lot of headaches to drivers in this area, but it could have been a lot brworse. >> , you mentioned the river. there's no way any of this fue leaked into the river from what you're seeing? it's pretty much confined to the beltway, right? >> reporter: it's quite a distance down the embankment,
5:03 pm
maybe 75 feet to 100 feet it would have had to go. itas really just the fuel in the front of those -- the cab tanks that drive the tractor, you can see those center screen. those were the ones punctured and leaking fuel. and they had the absorbent pads in case it did leak. the concern right now is the fuel in the tanker that's why they're bringing a secondary tanker to offload that fuel into, and that's aoing to take long time. the closure isng goi to be in place for a long time. but i don't see any officials on the sne that woul lead me to believe there's any pollution that made its way to theriver. >> you can imagine just how complicated thiis. we are working for you, monitoring the situation. brad's up in the sky for yo mark's on the ground. we're going to continue to cover this until he is remedied. but the traffice situation as have been saying is a nightmare,

5:05 pm
atlanta to replace cardinal donaldwhirl. the phrasing is important. they're saying, has been asked by the pope to replace cardinal donald whirl, it doesn't mean at he's been asked. what's interesting is what wve learned about him. if you've been following our coverage the last several months you heard his name before because i mentioned his name before. he's out of atlanta, been there sinc2004. before that he served from 2001 to 2004 as the president of the united states conference of caolic bishops. what is important about that time frame is that is when the0 candal -- the so called spotlight scandal of the catholic church came to the headlines and broke wide open,
5:06 pm
that was under his leadership that he then camit forward what is considered ground breaking movements within the echurch to deal with protection of minors. a lot of folks have said what he caorward with in his so-called dallas charter was very effectis and i something he's been praised for a lot. want you to hear fro professor with the catholic university of america, he is among those breaking this news today. listen to what he has t say about arch bishop gregory. >> it's interesting t see after a number of names have been put forward iis wilton gregory, a great african-american, a great catholic, a great arch bishop, who i think will be a peacemaker and transitional figure. he's 71. hed will h in his resignation by church law when 75he's so this could be a transitional period for the church in washington.r: >> reporo reiterate, this
5:07 pm
is more about arch bishop wilton gregory. we'll show you this information on your screen. he is the arch bishop of atlanta, as you heard there, he is 71 years old. he grew up inic o. was ordained a priest in 1973. ndy, he was a convert to the catholic faith and he's an african-american arch bishop in atlanta. if he were to come to washington, he would be thefr firstan-american arch bishop of washington. traditionally what has happened is that position has been elevated as in the past to cardinal. if that were to happen, then he would be the first black cardinal in the united states. so a lot of history could be made if this comes to fruition hewe. somethinge going to follow closely and continue to work our sources jim as we learn more. >> this is a major development. david culver. david, thanks so much.
