fuel at thtime. this could have been worse. >> let's check out the scene on the groundight now. news4 mark segraves has been there all day. we're hearing about are you seeing that from your vantageoint? >> reporter: you can definitely call it prog. let's take a live look. we told you they wanted to bring in an empty tanker truck because the tanker that went on its side has about 8,500 gallons of gasoline inside it. they're going to put that int the new tanker truck they brought in, once that's the cranes are going to right side that truck and hopefully get it out of here. we spoke to a spokesperson who said that's h rs away to being a completed process, and the beltway reopening. when the truck did turnover it did lk about 150 gallons of
6:01 pm
gasoline. and the fire department spokesperson told us what first responders did when they got here to prevent thatfreaking getting any worse. here's what he had to say. >> we estimate about50 gallons of gasoline spilled. there were a couple different leaks in the taker, our crews plugged those and at the same time contained any that was running off before it got to the potomac river.or >> rr: we can tell you after the tanker truck turned over there were three passenger cars in kind of a chainct rn that all crashed into that truck. we're told that one of theer dr of those cars was injured. minor injuries ande taken to th hospital. the driver of the truck and the other driver of the other two cars and their passengers were not injured. cause of tass of course, still under investigation. they do not know what caused the tuck ton onto its sides. that will be handled by police.
6:02 pm
but right no fairfax county and montgomery county fire department are here trying to contain the scene, get the gasoline offloaded so they can turn the truck back up, move it out, and get the beltway topen. that latest from the american legion bridge. >> they were lucky thosether cars, i know they got in a crash but they're still lucky, that could have been -- a full tanker truck. >> 100 yards further downhaou coul gone over that side of that bridge. >> yes. and, of course, serusly hurt the drivers. >> let's get a look at what this isoing toll the roads in the area. courtesy of first 4 traffic. the gridlock spread far beyond the legion bridge area. >> let's gohoack toer 4. how does it look in terms of things t radiating froms traffic? is it getting any better? are people finding their way home? >> reporter: the best way to describe it is like a spider web

nightmare as we're looking down. we're seeing all points leading to the legion bridgeic bly in bumper-to-bumper traffic. this is a complicated cleanup scene with the offloading of the fuel. but let me show you what it looks likethe south, into tyson's corner. they had tome s off different groups of traffic stuck in the delay. they made a closure point at 123, 267 and georgetown pike. othat's kind dispersed the traffic around the area. tens of thousands of drivers forced to navigate their way virginia.land from there's not a lot of options, the two states separated by ave large if you're not familiar. so it's a tough ride and a long commute for a lot of drivers. >> especially if you need to use chain brie now. at is going to be a real bottlene bottleneck. thanks, brad.

continuend that. this is somebody who's not too much of a stranger to the washington area, he from 2001 to 2004 served as the president as the united onatesrence of catholic bishops. during that time, 2001, 2004, you reca what happenedear the 2002 major scandal, the first one of sexual abuse involving the catlic church, the so called spotlight scandal. since that timeee he's credited with taking initiative with the dallas charter. that is something that went orward to hold priests accountable and protect minors. taking over washington, that is a completely different approach. that's going to take a lot of strategy given the recent taken place have in our area. i caught up with church experts to get an idea aso what exactly arch bishop gregory, if he were to be confirmed for ts position would have to take on. listen. >> the new arch bishop has incredible challenges ahead of
6:06 pm
him. he has, of course, a church in washington, ,which, of cour has pastoral ministry to the political community, who has a ministry to those who have themselves been harmed by the abuse. to those who have lost the church in washington, he must rebuild trust. to those who have, in a sense, said see ya later to the church. he must win them back. r orter: it is no question a fractured church, not only here in the greater d.c. area but across the united states. and so this is something that is going to be a very difficult t positi take on, there's no question if it is arch bishop gregory, which we should point out the archdiocese and vatican have not confirmed that. so he will take a seat that reques a lot of savviness when
6:07 pm
it comes to being political and dealing with washington and bringing that heeling. there's a lot of healing needed here. >> thanks, david. here are four things to know about the man reportedly aheed to lead troubled arch dioceses here. >> he's a chicago native and has been in the priesthood for almost half a century. he's 71 years old and has searched as arch bishop of atlanta for the past 14 years. if hccts the pope's appointment he'll become the arch bishop of washingtonfi and tht african-american arch bishop in our area. >> the five most resent arch bishops in washington were all created cardinals. if that tradition conditions that gregory would become the first african-american cardinal in the history of the catholic h ch "air force one" is about to
