from maclean on why it took so long to clear this crash. justin? >> reporter: well, molette, aaron, the first responders could not throw a truck on a tow an pull outf here because fairfax county fire and rescue, said the tanker had gallons ofd fuel in they were able to pump out the fuel and haul that tanker out of here. but on the ground, as you said, traffic was frozen in place. they did everything they could to fear the fuelt out of t tanker. fairfax fire and rescue sayin they believe about 150 gallons of fuel did spill d but they't believe that any of it got down to the river below. of course, get that fuel out of there. some 8,500 gallons or so, they took hours. chopper 4 was high above the

scene, getting a good look of all of this. you can see the tanking overturn and the wreck scene on the ground. you can see the arteries nearby are also clogged, including the inner and outer loop. a bottleneck there. we spoke to a driver who was trapped in all of this. she says, it was as frustrating >> i have had plenty of cars and trucks on the side of the road, just parked. i saw people get out of their car. i pack extra snacks every day. i had two extra bananas and that s my dinner. >> reporter: luckily, she was able to get out of here okay. you can see traffic here. tyou make your way toward american region bridge. as for the drer, the tanker uck, we're told he is okay.

muslim faith. a loudon county high school teacher is free and clear this morning after being accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a student. last year, kimberly winters was accused of having a sexual relationship with a juvenile. a judge dismissed the charges against her last month. al investigation found no evidence of crimonduct. winters has been on leave since her arrest. her attorney says she is expected to regain her pay.t her futuree school is unclear. a virginia politician in the spotlight. a student is accusing former governor doug wilder of sexually harassing her. sidney black told "the washington post," that wilder took her out to dinner to celebrate her 20th birthday. after dinner, wilder invited her back to his condo i richmond, kissed helcohol and without her consent. he offered to pay for law school and suggestedld she c live at

news 4 today starts now. good news for drivers all over the area. the beltway is back open after what can be described as a nightmare commute, nearly 12 hours after a tractor-trailer overturned, the mess is cleaned up this morning. we will have much more on the chaos it caused in a few minutes.

take you 28 mi aaron? >> melissa, thank you. back to the beltway crash that lasted well into the night last night. the beltway opened at the american legion bridge before 2:30 this 12 hours earlier, a tanker flipped on to itside. >> can't imagine what people were thinking and feeling in their cars. justin finch with more on this cleanup effort. r: good morning. yes. this was a big job. just think about ite. h this tanker truck turned over on its side, full of fuel and leaking. drivers out here, they were just stuck. we got a wide look. the tanker truck turned over there. theesponders below.

and the traffic, as well.x fairounty fire rescue, about 100 gallons of fuel on that truck. montgomery county and fire and rescue, had to work hard to pum gallon after gallon of fuel from that tanker. they eventually cleared it, righted it, and were able to haul it off. on the ground, this tedious a time-consuming job was made more so, oncere saw signs of leaking from the tanker, as well. >> we estimate about 150 gallons of gasoline was spilled. our crews plugged the leaks and contained the fuel that was running off. >> reporter:hances are for the drivers who were stuck out here, reportedly sleeping in their cars, they wer dreaming about what you are seeing right now, a wide-open 495 northbound here.
