>> reporter: good morning, guys. i think this i going to stretch well into may and maybe beyond at. boeing has been working for months to come up with a software upgradow but says it needs more time. it could be weeks before they submit the final approval or final submission to the faa for approval. that means hundreds of planes worldwide wil remain firmly on the ground for now. it'she fatal flaw suspected of taking down two 737 max flights overseas. a software glitch impacting an automated stall as mcas.asknown boeing h been working ono a fix hopingve it ready this week. >> we're working with customers and regulators around the world to restore fai o in industry. >> reporter: but now bing says the final package of software enhancements won't be ready for weeks. the faa saying in a statement more work is needed on that f

adding it will conduct a rigorous safety review and the w software won't be installed until faa officials are completely satisfiedoe thatg has identified and appropriately addressed all pertinent issues. the max boeing's newest and best selling plane ever was grounded march the world in following the crash of ethiopian airline 302. that comes months after a crash involving a lion aplane that went down in indonesia. the pilots in both cases fought the planes which pitched wildly in the sky befor ultimately going down. the crashes killed all 346 people on board both jets. in a statement monday, boeing says safety is our first priority. and we will take thorough and methodical approach to the development and testing of thed to ensure we take the time to get it right. >> yeah. and tom, the big question is we want to know how long it's going to take not only to fix those

tanes but tho getm back up in the air. what's your guess on that? >> reporter: firstot they've to submit this to the faa. i think we're talking about late april at this point before they submit i to the faa. the faa is under tremendous pressure right now.o we've aot investigations into the max. the faa is g tng to takir time. let's assume the faa approves ad that up some time in may. then all of these airlines have got to train theirpi ts. i can tell you american alone has 4,000 737 lpilots. f them have got to go through a training procedure. and then the plane still isn't necessarily certified to fly. the faa has to give the final f approv the plane, not just the upgrade. hen the world's aviation authority has to approve this plane. i think we're talking about late y, maybe even june. so increasingly now we're talking about the possibility that this is going to impact tse summer traveon. >> all right. tom costello in d.c. thanks. also this mo ling, thed
