the officer was investigating a shoplifting when all of a sudden the suspect just took off. the officer gave chase and requested backup which arrived quickly. today police are saying that call for backup m have saved this officer's life. his colleag could see that he was struggling and immediately jumped into action rendering at the scene before an ambulance could come and rush the officer to holy weoss. e told the officer was alert and conscious during the drive over, but again,e is listed in critical condition. a few moments ago the acting police chief spoke to us. he phrased the work of thefe ow officers and the medical staff here at holy cross. >> our department owes him a great debt of gratitude. also i want to thank the community for keeping our officers, especially t officer, and his family and friends and shift mates in thoughts and prayers, especially over the rest of the night. >> reporter: the chief said we will likely find that out tomorrow but we do know that the ily here ats have f the hospital, so at the very

another number for you. 15. that'she numbe of murder sos far this year in ward seven ofo city. council man benson gray says that's three times wor than lastar. what happened here on alabama avenue, out of control. >> it was absolutely horrific. it was absolutely an event that is beyond brazen almost. >> reporter: it happened on a busy street. it hpened in broad daylight. it happened across the way from a charter school. the victim 44-yearld rodney gordon, father of thr, hisee wa home from a neay construction job. this is how witnesses told the story to me. they say mr. i gordon w his silver car on alabama avenue here at the light at branch. five shots fired.

here's a look now atur top story. a montgomery county police officer in critical condition a medical ring emergency. >> the officer was chasing a shoplifting suspect here this at wheaton westfield mall when place say he suddenly collapsed. >> during that event he equested assistance from other officers and upon the arrival of other officers their arrival was very quick w recognized that he was in medical distress. our officers rdered immediate aito him. the officer was rushed to holy cross hospital in silver springs just two miles away. >> once again we are told he in this critical but stable condition at this hour. cory smith have will an update coming up on news 4 at 00.

unexplained fires erupting inands of kia and hyundai vehicles. tonight the federal government has opened an investigation into the cause. our consumer reporter susan hogan has been following this story for months now and has this important update. >> well, there very thousands of reports of kias and hyundais spontaneously catching fires. it happened to a couple here in maryland. the consumer advocacy group filed a petition with the national highwayraffic safety administration last june calling for an investigation. well, at that time the had just been over about 100 reports of fires. just days ago theyranted a petition and revealed there have been now more than 3,000 reports

from now on, the u.s. department of agriculture lab will no longer use cats as part

of its research. this comes after a watchdog group made some disturbg allegations about what was happening here at the lab. it's being alleged that researchers have been killing cats intentionally and have been feeding asian meat market animals to healthy lab cats for testin the agenc says food safety research is paramount, but testing with cats will not b reinstated. game set and match. city open tennis tournamyit will be s in the district. it's been here for 50 years, but it was on the verge o leaving. mark segraves reports, the commitment to staying in d.c. is going to have an impact well beyond the courts. >> when it started in 1969, it was called the washington star international tennisam tout. while the sponsorship has changed over the years, the mission remains the same. to carry on the vision of one of its founders, tennis great arthur ashe who wanted african-american kids to be able to see championship tennis in a public park.

rom where this incident all began earlier this afternoon. let's go and show you some video we shot shortly after we arrived on the scene at westfieldll wheaton we're told that officer was investigating a shoplifter when the suspect just suddenly started to run. that officer gave chase and called him backup which arrived immediately. police are telling us the fact that those officers got to the oscene quickly saved officer's life. they noticed that their colleague was struggling, having some sort of medical episode. they jumped ily immediand started rendering aid until an ambulance could arrive and ultimately rush this officer here to holy cross. e're told he was alert and conscious, butagain, he is in critical condition at this moment. we heard fromef the police c earlier today. he prays the quick thinking of those
