officer. this officer's medical condition has not changed. it remains critical. but the officer is stable andhe under watchful eye of doctors here at holy cross. this hospital is about two miley rom where this incident all began earlier this afternoon. let's go and show you some video we shot shortly after we arrived on the scene at westfieldll wheaton we're told that officer was investigating a shoplifter when the suspect just suddenly started to run. that officer gave chase and called him backup which arrived immediately. police are telling us the fact that those officers got to the oscene quickly saved officer's life. they noticed that their colleague was struggling, having some sort of medical episode. they jumped ily immediand started rendering aid until an ambulance could arrive and ultimately rush this officer here to holy cross. e're told he was alert and conscious, butagain, he is in critical condition at this moment. we heard fromef the police c earlier today. he prays the quick thinking of those officers and he also asked

i montgomery county police officer fighting for his life tonight afterle collapsing w on the job. pl police say the officer was questioning a suspected shoplifter when the shoplifter took off running. the police officer called for backup and started chasing after the suspect,ut that's when he suddenly collapsed. police say that call for help lly have saved the officer's life. officers quickly responded and immediately rendered aid right there at the scene. the officer wff rushed to holy cross hospital in silver springs. we're told that he is there in critical condition but the good news is that he is stable tonigh t as fort shoplifter, police say they were able to catch that sujiect. doreen, back to you. >> leon, thank you.

d not have any spring lers. we're told it's one of about 80 buildings in the county exempt due to age. iestigators updated on this massive transformer fire at a fairfax county high-rise. they say c weldingght fire spreading to plastg wirinnd then to the transformer yesterday. the flames never actually got into the 26 story story billing in baileys cros but a whole lot of black smoke did. hundreds of people may be out of their homes for a week while the building is cleaned and electricity is restored. the red cross is pviding temporary shelter for anyone that needs it. now that school iistricts ar virginia are allowed to start their school year before labor day, students and teachers inri fresburg are in for a shock to the system. this fall their first day of school will be august 12th. school leaders are worried about keeping and hiring neweachers with the short summer vacation.

they believed he was a suspect in an armed robbery earlier thin g. investigators say a juvenile victim called police to say three young guys stole his cell phone. police say this young boy fit the description, so he and a 13-year-old were taken into custody. they say a cell phone and a bb b gun were fou williams says her son is innocent. >> by him being with the group of kids, of course he's going to be a suspect, but my son didn't even tnything of what was going on. >> police say they didn't realize at first that williams' son was so young. they released a statement which says in part, quote, after the identification process, officers realized one of th suspects was 10 years old and per general order they made notification to their official who then notified youth and family services. and they decided not to arrest williams' son but she says the damage has already been done. >> i just had to cry. it just heart my feelings so bad
