granddaughter dead. >> five town homes were destroyed leaving nearly a dozen live. without a place t the two-alarm fire started around 4:15 p.m. yesterday on gordon stinnett avenue in chesapeake bay -- chesapeake beach. chopper 4 caught the moment as one of the town homes collapsed as it was doused with water. several firefighters were hurt, three had to beaken to the hospital with burns. wendy welch and herte granddau stephanie link were trapped inside when it collapsed. both died. wendy'shlaughter kn smoke exclusively with news4 last nightment. so she not only loster family but also her home. fire officials are still looking for a cause but say it looks like the fire was there are ways for you to help the many people displaced by the fire. reheh out to red cross and see what they need. they're alreadtehelping with orary housing and food. we'll have more information in the nbc washington app at the top of the home page. in just a matter of hours, e there could b an official announcement of a new leader the archdiocese of washington. reports from the catholic news agency surfaced that the vatican would night archbishop wilton gregor as the new leader of the archdiocese of washington. the "washington post" is reporting that announcement will come today. >> archbishop wilton gregory is considered by church experts as a potential transitionalfigure. in 2002 he led the u.s. conference of catholic bishops and oversaw landmark changes that helped predator- that held predator priests accountable. that's importance because the

archdiocese of washington, which ha been without an official leader for nearly six months, is in need of healing. gregory would cucceeddinal donald wuerl who resigned in october after he was named in a pennsylvania grand jury report that accused church officials of covering up sexual abuse. mont before thesignation, theodore mccarrick, a former archbishop of washington, wasro expelled the roman catholic priesthood after an internal investigation found that sex abuse claims against him were credible. we are monitoring for the possible announcement. now to the latest on the deadly new zealand mosque attacks. the man accused of carrying out the massacre will be backn in court friday to face dozens of murder charges. he's been charged with one count of murder after being arrested last month. 50 people were killed in the twr mosques int church. dozens of others were shot and wounded. friday's hearing will be about tarrant's legalrepresentation. tarrant has said he would like to represent himself. it's 4:05. back in our area, a final report

finds that a montgomery county police officer was justified in a deadly ceofr-involved shooting last summer. body camera video sho the the officbetween and robert white in silver spring last june. whit was unarmed, but investigatorsay he assaulted the officer after he attempted to speak with him. a police found folding knife in white's pocket. the report says in part the facts and circumstances of the encounter between the officer wand mr.te dead straight that the use of deadly force was lawful and justified. the howard county state's attorney cleared him of wrongdoing. an accident shut down part of 270 yes officials saying the crash happened during an escort training exercise. o're told anicer on a motorcycle was practicing a maneuver near clarksburg road,

thad some sort of problem which caused him to lay the bike down to avoid a serious crash. a second officer also on motorcycle had to do the same. both of those officers will be okay. fallout from the attorney general's summary. investigators for special counsel robert mueller tell "the new york times" the final report was more damaging than attorney general william barr revealed.k "the newtimes" reports that mueller's investigations are frustrated because barr did not adequately portray their conclusions. barr wrote a letter last month saying mueller cleared presidelu trump of con but did not make a conclusion on obstruction. the attorney general determined the president did not obstruct justice. th "times" reports barr w frustrated mueller did not make a decision about obstruction. nbc ws has not independently confirmed the "times'" reporting. meanudile, the houseiary approved subpoenas for mueller's full report. barr has saidwi that he release a redacted version by the middle of this month. next wk barr i set to testify

before congress about the justice department's 2020 budget. it will be the first opportunitt for lawmake question him. let's stay on capitol hill because there's another battleb ing between president trump and house democrats. the house ways and mean chairman richard neal requested six years plaintiff trump's tax returns from the irs. the request is part of congress' oversight duties, but republicans say it could set a dangerous precede of using returns for political gain. the president has refused to release his tax documents because he says he's being audited by the irs. virginia's lieutenant governor justin fairfax asked prosecutors in bosto and north carolina to investigate sexual assault allegations against him. fairfax made the first statements in several months after two women accused him of sexuality more than ten years -- of sexual assault more than ten years ago. he insists the allegations are untrue and that the sexual encounters with the two women were consensual. >> i do not t believet national television appearances

welcome back. the district is part of a new legal challenge accusing the department of agriculture of significantly weakening school lunch standard six states and d.c. say the department weakened nutritional standards in school breakfast and luncheshen it relaxed requirements on salt and refined grains. the changesllow for more sodium and fewer whole grains in school meals. made eges the government the changes without giving the public an opportunity to comment and in opposition to requirements set by congress. when it made the change, the agriculture department said it

wanted to reduce bureaucracy that required schools to get special wafeivers. the lawsuit asks a judge toov turn the changes. the maryland state senate s approved a measure that would invest millions in public schools. the blueprint for maryland's future, meant to transform hools in the state, passed by a 41-3 vote. that includes $355 million for fiscal year 2021 and $5 million for 2022. a large chunk of that is contingent on new revenue that lawmakers say could potentially fclude money comingm sports betting. the bill heads to the house. maryld just took a major step in preventing young adults from smoking. the general assembly passed a bill making tobacco usefollegal anyone under 21. the current legal age is 18. you must also b 21 years old to vape under the new bill. the bill does not apply to members of the military. d.c. and eight states along with hundreds of cities and counties have enacted tobacco 21 laws.

maryland's governor, larry hogan, has not said if he will sign the bill. in "news 4 your health," unhealthy eating kills more people across the world than smoking or any other health risk. researchers at the university of washington found poor diets were responsible for nearly11 million adult deaths. the deaths were caused by cardiovascular dise cancer, and diabetes. researchers say too much sodium, red meat, and sugy drinks were contributing factors. they also say people do not eat enough whole grains afruits. the 5g network is getting bigger. verizonolling out t service, joining at&t. verizon customers in chicago and minneapolis can access the 5g network. but they'll need to use motorola z3combined with the 5g moto mod. the wireless network will give peak speeds ten times than you might get on the current connection. pae c will launch service in more than 30 cities. sprint plans to roll out 5g in
