it is a busy morning. we're following several developing stories tarting with a deadly crashnvolving a school bus in clinton. you could see the damage to the bus there. a truck and two oer car involved. we have an update on the clean-up and the road closures. it was als a tough scene for firefighters in alexandria early this morning. a woman found dea in a home that caught on fire and her husband now fighting for his life. we have some new information about what caused the fire. >> plus, it is 3 million times the size of the earth. and today for the first time we're seeing images of the black hole. > and we are taking a look at a beautiful day out there.

plenty of sunshine and warming temperatures. but rain on the way. we'll talk about it and show you when,om cing up. announcer: "news4 midday" starts now. good morning, and welcome to "news4 midday." i'm pat lawson muse. >> and i'm erika gonzalez. and we begin with a horrible deveping story in prince george's county. chopper4 over the sne of a multi-vehicle crash involving a prince george's county school seaving one woman dead. >> all of this happened as people were simply headed to irk and school this morning. nbc4 justin fin live at the scene in clinton with the latest on the terrible wreck. justin? >> reporter: pat, erika, if you were here close to 7:00 this morning, you saw this mess close-up or maybe caught it and if you have been here in the hours since, as you could see, it remains a mess out he, this multi-vehicle crash at branch and serat road and as we're looking right now. this scene here still in

progress. the clean-up under wayus they jt removed the woman who lost her life as well. as you mentioned, she was among involved ine people this wreck. six people were injured. two refused treatment. among it injured, two teens on the way to school aboard the very school bus back there and we could tel you this, from the drivers on the road to those who live and work nearby to police themselves, everyone wants to know how this wreck happened. at branch avenue and serat road, a sight so awful this left drivers who travel this stretch every day thinking again about coming back. >> i've seen accidents over here so i'm always looking i'm not going to be taking this road any more. i'll be going the long way. >> reporter: consuela's eyes were fixed on the school bus and the overturned semi and the mangled cars caught up in the lti-vehicle death that left one dead. >> i could confirmme we've lost er of our community in the collision this morning.

>> reporter: the police chief arrived on scene and briefed by investigators and shared with il news4 early de about how this crash may have happened. >> the semi-truck was traling uth on route 5 and every other vehicle was on serat road traveling across route 5 and then this clisionoccurred. >> reporter: several were injured including two teen age students from charle flowers high and the chief said those stents and the bus driver were given precautionary checkups as investigators look deeper into the crash and the cause theai chief the lay of the land will play a factor. even more recent,e pointsout, for drivers to be alert behind the wheel at all times. >> route 5, you're at the bottom of a bowl. it'sng trave downgrade in both directions and meeting here at serats road so if you are texting while yodriving, i are not buckled up, this is one of the places where,f because o the geography, we could have worse outcomes than a collision

on a flat piece ofroadway. with nine people injured and one person dead, what goes through your mind?ll >> the families because they lost a loved one. and that they have to do better with this intersection right here because if this doesn't make a change, the i don't know -- >> reporter: something has to change. the majority opinion this morning as you look livee at th crash scene and many moving parts.e we hraffic northbound getting by with this crash scene involved. on the southbound side, you can see there again that overturned truckload there is being cleaned up. that has to be gone before they could fully open trafficere. again as you heard the chief say, how this all happened, still up in the air. it does appear that was going southbound on branch. those vehicles involved were crosng at serat and somehow in between this crash happened again. one person dead, many injured. expect this mess to be here for

a quite a bit longe live in clinton, i'm justin finch, nbc4. back inside to you. >> thank you so much. the loudoun county sheriff's office is investigating a sexual assault in sterling. a woman said last nighthe was awakened by a strange man in her home on northuke street. he was sexual assaulting her and ran off when she awoke. sheriff deputies searched the area but have not been able to find anybody. new this morning, prince george's county police are trying to figure out who stole an atm. investigators say a vehicle smashed into thele 7n convenience store along watkins park drive in upper marlboro and body was hurt. but today's incident is the latest in a series of atm robberies in our area. u might remember this one at a 7-even in lanham last mon when thieves rammed a pickup truck through the window of the store of the 7-eleven near annapolis road.

outside of the beltway, it will fall flat but seasonal this time. ye however we do have rain into friday and also have some rain chances lingering around for the weekend. of course, we have the cherry blossom parade and things goingr on in the dt and surrounding areas. so we'll time out that rain for you and let you know what to pect as we head into the weekend. that is coming up in about 20 minutes. >> ksthlauryn. developing now, a woman is dead ander husband is hurt after a fire at their old town alexandria home. this is on south pitt street next to duke. >> reporter david culver is live at the scene with newetls about what officials are saying about what caused the fire. david? >> reporter: that is right. hat the cause of the fire was electrical and appears this started in the bedroomou and you see looking at the row homep that e oor has boarded out windows where fire officials had

to gain entry to get into that bedroom to start rescue operations to try to save the two people inside. we know that it was a husband and his elderly wife.bl they wereto get the man out, however the woman were told died inside of th home. i want to take you to the scene. this is just after midnight. you could see how active it was here on south pitt street. again this is old town alexandria and they had several fire crews outxand aria fire and rescue were assisted by fairfax county fire and rescue, to try and get the two people who lived inside of this home out as f thate took hold. now as we mentioned, that fire started in the bedroom but the part of the challenge asde ribed by old town alexandria officials and folksea from the the homes are histic. listen to one of the fire investigators say how they were able io getide of the home eventually. > early 18th century construction, thestairwells are extremely narrow. the hallways are narrow.

and it does provide for challenges for the firefighters. but due to the nature of where d, therertment is loca very well aware and trained and overcoming those obstacles. >> reporter: and i o you know town, many of the homes are historic and this home has historic placard on it. fire officials were able to get the man out. we're told that he is in the hospital recovering. it is unclear just how serious his injuries are and two pets were rescued from the home but unfortunately the woman who lived here died and one neighbor telling us she had mobility issues. working to learn their names and what they meant to the community and as we zbraerj the detae'll update you. back to you two. >> such a heartbreaking story there. thank you, david culver. ga also under inveson this morning, this fire at a montgomery county honda dealership. this is on automobile boulevard

in silver spring. we're told it took about 100 firefighters to put the flames out here. one of them suffered minor injuries. a cause hasn't been determined yet but we do kw that the fire arted inside a service bay. officials say the fire did more than $1.5 million in damage. a new solar farm is coming to spotsylvania. fredericksburg say the county board of supervisors approve the permit yesterday. it iss a controversial there. supervisors voted 5-2 to approve at leastne section of the 500 megawatt solar facility. the farm will be run by sustainable power group. that is a company based in utah. it already has agreements to sell the energy to major high-tech companies apple and microsoft as well as the university of richmond. the board will take up two other special use permits at theirin metomorrow. right now, president trump is headed to texas. he will attend a fundraiser or several fundraisers in san

rate is up by 25% from this time last year. a maryland man acced of plotting a terrorist attack at national harbor has been denied il. prosecutors say 28-year-old rondel henry was ipired by isis and wanted to kill as many people as possible. during a hearing yesterday his attorney set henry is an american citizen. court documentsaye stole a u-haul truck with a plan to run overedtrians. he allegedly targeted dulles airport first but moved to national harbor when he couldn't get through dulles security. through this morning, israel benjamin netanyahu appears to be headed toward aisric fifth term as prime minister. unoffici election results give his right-wing party a solid majority in parliament following last night's national election, relection would give netanyahu an important boost as he braced for the likmiihood of cl charges in a series of corruption scandals. he has denied i wrongdoin all

actress lori loughlin and more than a dozen parents face new challenges in the college admission cheating scandal. 16 parents included now in a new federal indictment accusing them of money laundering. the new charges couldead to additional jail time. the parents are accused of taking part in a scheme that involved riggingge col entrance exams and bribing coaches at top universities. a mysterious warning about a spread around the world that is called candida auris. and it is a drug-resistant fungus which is very difficult to treat. it could be difficu to diagnose and it is spreading rapidly in hospitals and nursing homes in the united states. the fungus pre on the elderly and people wita compromised immune system. >> had real success that if a hospital identifies its first case, that they aggressively

get this, eight telescopes around the world over a five-day period. scientists say in order to take this photo, each telescope had to achieve the highest resolution possible from the surface of the earth. it is the equivalent of being able to read the date on a quarter in los angeles while standing right here in washington, d.c. >> wow! >> yeah. so when that was achieved, history was made. >> in april ofll 2017 of the dishes in the event horizon telescope swirled and turned and stared at a galaxy 55 million light years away. it is called m-87. and there is a supermblsive k hole at its core. and we are delighted to be able to report t you today that we have seen what we thought was unseeable.nd we have seen taken a picture of a black hole. >> you canr he enthusiasm dn his voice and see it on his
