following breaking news this saturday morning from georges county. overnight a shooting leaves a man dead in fort washington. called to tucker road off saint bas road. once on-scene found a man outside of a home unresponsive. crews rushed him to the hospital but he did not survive. police are searching for the gunman responsible and trying to figure out why, th motive. we'll stay on top of this and post the latest updates in our washington nbc app. many folks tay will take advantage of what is hopefully warmer weather. >> we need ths. lots of you out for the national cherry blossom parade. that means lots of road closures. look at the map to help guide you through the many roads shut down along the paraderoute. the parade runs along constitution avenue to 17th street from 10:00 this morning until 2:00 this afternoon. also today, there are emancipation day festivities. a parade, concert and fireworks.

he falls in. ght on to the tracks. the man manages to get up. got help nearby passengers. they scrambled ov to really try to get him back up on to the platform just in time, loo. at this. the train comes in about 50 seconds after he was pulled out of there. the man was taken to the hospital. we're told fortunately will be okay. here's the thing. you might remember this happened before. last summer when a visually impaired woman fell on to the tracks at the van ness station. she was searching for the door on one of metro's newer 7000 series traind mistook a gap between two railcars. stepped off the platform and fell on to the tracks. the federal transit administrationred immediate changes. metro later switched rubber barriers to chains btween railcars. the death ofin an arlon fl philanthropist being investigated as a homide. she died six months ago but now evidence and the medical examiner's report point to a

her boyfrien th father thought things were good until his father started complaining about his mom's boyfriend. >> hits me in my face and hits me in my stomach and is really mean. >> francesco is a prince georges county police officer. after conversations with his kit s mom went nowhere he we to the internet to try and contact francesco on his own last month. >> when i did a google search i typed in his name and i came across an article. >> reporter: in fact, he came across a list of old article it's by several tv ations and news bloggers in the d.c. region. he was indicted by a prince georges grand jury for beating lamar's son in 2015 when he was 3 years old. what did you think when you heard the details of the case? when you saw whawas reported? >> that this is -- this is outrageous. like, why and how can someone keep something from me for so

long when that is my child? >> reporter: because lamar lives outside the d.c. region he saysa he was not of the charges. after abusing the child the child soiled the bed. state's attorney and the police chief released statements condemning the officer who was indicted and charged wit abuse and assault. lamar was able to retrieve his son's medical documents from children's national and what's ds ailed in the pages expla why the officer was indicted by a grand jury. according to those records the 3-year-old was spanked on the buttocks by the boyfriend. the child's head hit the drywall and he began foaming at the mouth. the officer performed cpr. doctors say the child suffered head trauma. >> my son was unconscious four minutes. he wafoaming from the mouth. >> reporter: the medical report goes on to say the boyfriend is

a county officer and when other officers responded to the scene they ruled it an accident so child protective services was not cond wted. lamar al not contacted when this happened three years ago. not by the child's mother or anyone. >> did you get any mail from rne state's ats office? >> no mail. ou any mail from social services in prince georgesy? >> no mail. >> reporter: a month ago lamar won temporary custody. he needs an attorney and has a gofundme account to raise money. till son was suffering, was suffering until i was granted temporary custody. >> reporter: according to sources with knowledge of the case the charges against the officer were opped by an assistant state's attorney after he agreed to anger management.co his expunged almost immediately. prince georges county police confirm he is back with the department. >> what is your reaction to no one contacting the biological father to let you know your son was an alleged victim of abuse?

they're hazardous toifets and wil >> reporter: the town knew something had to be done. >> it all started as a result oe cleaningown of middleburg streets and finding so many cigarette butts and trying to find a way to dispose of them in an environntally sensitive manner. >> people see an issue. they get e to make the community a better place. >> so we came u with receptacles like this that collect the cigarettes. >> easy to do. c not tisuming. just a -- just part of taking care of keeping the town clean. >> reporter: tim cole is the cleanup guy. it does not mind the extra work. >> when you do seelping, it -- it's worth it. d reporter: there are 15 butt collectors arountown. and every couplef weeks those butts get shipped off to the recyclers. >> the idea is eliminate the idea of waste.

so how's the cleanup going this morning? >> reporter: well, it's getting started here. you know, as you said, going on at sites all over the city pt not necessarily on the banks of long n coaacostia but still the site. along with the d.c. department of energy and environment and several other groups and oliticians and just volunteers that will show up do things like this. we here at fort mahan park part of the defenses of washington during the civil war and now part of the defenses of the river. part of what they want to do make sure that people make the connection that you don't have to necessarily be able to see he river to affect the river. with a lot going on on the anacostia now, important as its of b we hear from the d.c. department of energy and environment. take a look. >> this such anxcitingacostia . 2018, theear to celebrate major steps forward in terms of restoring the river and honoring

sust offint barnabas road. arrived on the scene and found e man on side of the road unconscious. rushed to the hospital and later onounced dead. police are searching for the gunman and trying to determi a motive. we'll post the late esst on thec washington app. a bethesda man is facing charges for several sexual assaults. police worry there may be more victims and tell us one woman was raped while the man was out on bond. austin vann attack add more in 2017 and another this year. in that first attack a woman says vann lured her to an empty apartment to collect her belongings she left at a party. then in juary, while vann was free and awaiting trial on that first case a woman says she met him on social media. b she met him athesda restaurant in person. left the drink unattended. he woke up later in an unfamiliar place where she says vann was raping her.

he's held at a detention center awaiting trial. meanwhile, a man sentenced for running a prostitutiof ring out os home in sterling. he was exploiting women who spoke little english ind struggledcially. police say he would traffic the women from new york and advertise the service on business cards hernandez is undocumented immigrant from el salvador sentenced to more than two years in jail for the crime. greg craig back in court monday. the former obama white house counsel about work on behalf of foren governments. he was released from custody and scheduled to be back iurt next wednesday for a hearing whether to surrender his utssport. the charges grewf special counsel robert mueller's investigation into paul lo manafort's ying activities. x-raying accused of misleading the j tice department about work on behalf of the pro-russian president of ukraine in 2012. three years after craig left t white house to the latest in the fight over illegal immigration.

>> reporter: last winter flooding from a storm destroyed the boat dock and left tons of debris scatt ed along the cove. local and federal leaders celebrated the cleanup and reopening of a new dock but they warn it's just a temporary fix. >> now the dock goes out further. that gives us more time, but it just gets sentimented in. the natural river flow doesn't work right. >> reporter: the potomac river doesn't flow right alonr this ch of the river because of this man-made berm built in the late 1960s. as a result, ther rive doesn't get the proer water flow. so the cove is drying up. >> yeah. it's a horrible situation. . >>y eporter: from the first on the job, the new secretary of interior david bernhardt expressed support for saving the cove. >> we're trying to eliminate thm ntenance backlog for the canal. >> reporter: maryland congressman jamie raskin took to the river himself today was cautiously optimistic. >> i hope that the secretary will commit to work with us to make sure that the whole area
