"early today" starts right now. and good morning to you. i'm richard luibe >> good to with you. i'm frances rivera. an entire city and the world is waking up in shock after a devastating fire reduced parts of notre dame cathedral to ash. flames engulfed the spire, the catastrophic collaps the gathering place that has been a symbol of freedom and fraternity in paris for over 800 years. 13 million visitors from all fa mhs come tovel at the heart of the french capital. it's a devastating start to holy week for catholic church, but french president emmanuel macron is vowing to rebuild. joining us fromondon is sarah harmon with the very latest. sarah, good morning. >> reporter: frances rivera, good morning. what a loss for france and the world. we're talking about a cathedral

that took 200 years to build. yesterday just a few hours for large parts of it to be destroyed. the cause of this fire isn't clear yet. the paris prosecutor's office is investigating at the moment they are treating it as an accident, and a key focus o this vestigation is likely to be the scaffolding that was outside the cathedral. notre dame was uergoing a nearly $7 million renovation when this fire broke out. one firefighter was injured, but remarkably, frances, we don't have any reports of fatalities. that's pretty incredible when you consider t size of this fire, and also the location, a densely populated urban area. as you said, the fennch presid is vowing to rebuild and this morning one of france's rich est men says he's going to nate more than $100 million to the reconstruction efforts. but, guys, it's going to be a massive undertaking because parts of this cathedral were made of wood. this morning a french cultural herincge expert says fra

>> rep ter: students say climbing the stairs of fordham's university clock tower is a rite of passage. early sunday that tradition turned tragic. 22-year-old journalism major sidney montrise fell to her death. the senior fm portland, oregon fell to her death. the president writing, there are es words to dibe the loss of someone so young and full of promise. she was climbing up the tower with frids and reportedly posting video on social media. police say she fell through a staircase aanding dropped 30 feet. in the school newspaper, students described their own experiences inside t tower. there was a huge spiral staircase going up, and weul 't see the top, one said. fordham says the tower is normally locked, and it is investigating. while students mourn, one friend describing m anf ries ashe t sweetest soul she had ever met.
