right now. >> we're getting a look inside of notre dame cathedral, less than 24 hours after the iconic landmark nearly burned to the ground. this morning a clear picture of the damage to the 850-year-old church. historyayn dis in washington. it is emancipation day, about a once a year experience. and we have some sunshine along with some cloud cover out there today as temperares rise. but some stronger storms on the way to our area. i'll let you know when and we'll talk abo the easter weekend forecast coming up. >> announcer: "news4 midday" arts now.

good morning and welcome to "news4 midday" i'm mol issa molette. >> and i'm eun yang. we begin with the lates overseas following the devastating fire at the cat thedral of notre dame. >> the fire was extinguished but firefighters are on stand by and the france president vows it will be icbuilt. >> rhard engle reports from paris. >> reporter: the cathedral of notre dame still stands. but without her elegant spire. burned away by a devastating fire. >> for me, notre dame isma as as for americans, it is a mother. and suddenly you feel your h mother been hurt by the fire. >> reporter: while an investigation is still ongoing, french officials are so far calling the blaze unintentional. they suspect it started around 6:30 monday night among skafl folding at the base of the fire. but the flames spread quickly across the medieval roo made of so many timbers it was

nicknamed the forest. the heat kept building and rising until -- >> oh, my god,tehele just fell inside of the church. oh, my god. >> reporter: the spire came crashing down into the church's fa the flames even further. ininterior. around 400 firefighters finally contained the flames enough to go inside. fire aghtersnnounced they managed to save the structure. notre da would survive. and they said major works of art and relics, including the holy crown of thos were saved. french president macron told the nation -- the worse has been avoided. notre dame will be rebuilt he said, because it is what the french people expect and what they're history deserves. about a hundred firefighters are still on stand by in case the fire starts against but once pieces of theat cdral have been removed, specially the

the water system saved the dome during a lightning strike. historians a 208-year-old original ben franklin lightning rod savedhebuilding. there was no smoke or fire insi u. stay withs for coverage of the notre dame fireow right n the funeral for the longest serving house speaker in maryland's history has begun. michael busch is being honored at st. john newman church in annapolis. he died last week from pneumonia at the age of 72. the service comes after busch was lyingn repose for two days. mourners were able to walk by his casket draped with the maryland to pay their final respected in the rotunda of the e house. he was first elected to the house in 1986, about 17 years later he became the speaker. lawmakers are remembering his impact. >> he gavee my first sub-committee chairmanship and i believe he saw something in me that i didn't see in myself and

people have died on 210 just before the new year and there have been 134 crashes with injuries along 210. >> now a grass root effort byig neors have resulted in several new speed cameras going up. >> megan mcgrath is live along the road in ft. washington with more on the safety changes. hi, megan. >> reporter: good morning, guys. it has been a grass root efforts. a group of citizens tired of the accidents and deaths coming together and calling for change. and thanks to their efforts, more speedameras and other safety enhancements are coming to indian head highway. route 210, indian heahi ghway, one of the most dangerous roads in the dmv. jazzin knows that well. her daughter was killed trying to cross the street to cch the bus. determined to bring change, duncan and a diverse group of citizens met in the evenings after work and kept up the

pressure for safety improvements and their efforts have paid off. three new speed cameras are coming in june. >> i am humbled, i am thankful. my personal journey is to do whatever i can so that no other family ever experiences what myself and so many other falies have gone through. >> reporter: and there are other safety enhancements coming, including rumble strips and improved lighting intersections and changes to make traffic signals more visible. people who drive along h 2e it helps. >> as we know, there are always acciden accidents unfortunately many fatalities it safer is awesome. >> i every time i turn on the news i hear about an accident, either horrific or minor, so hopefully this will stop people from speeding and cut down the fatalitiesn this road. >> reporter: and speed is often

new this morning, d.c. police were on the scene of a homicide in southeast for more than eight hours overnight. police say a man was found shot to death near the kip d.c. douglasampus school on pomeroy road near stanton road. we're still working to learn his name but we know he was shot before 9:00 last night. no arrests have been made. new at midday, police are ok for a robber who stole a 94-year-old woman's purse. on

>> nearcticut avenue. nicole jacobs is there this morning. hi, nicole. >> reporter: melissa, don't count this 94-year-old woman out. she stared the thief square in the face and fought back. we're told there were no witnesses to this crime and ato this pointe are searching for surveillance video. shortly after 11:00 p.m., in the area of connecticut avenue and porter street, a call to police for help. there was an emergency in this northwest neighborhood. d.c. police say a 94-year-old woman was approacd by a man who said give me your purse. but this elderly woman fought back. strong ehtugh to f off the thief and strong enough to walk to the ambulance on her own. new this midday, we've learned the suspect made off with the woman's purse,s credind cash and cell phone. the man has yet to be located. the woman did receive a minor cut to her hand.

wellll it wi be just a few more months until you counce again see the amazing view from the top of the washington monument. the national park service said it will renen sometime i august. of a new construction security screening building is underway. completion of the building is slightly delayed because crews had to remove s contaminated soil. the new elevatedor system is in stalled andem there was pro with that and now just needs final testing and certification. the monument has been closed since 2016. so a few years. >> now is just in time f summer and august. people will get back up to that

through the day temperatures out there right now, in the 50s across the area. 57 here in d.c. 53 in gaithersburg. 54 in leesburg at this moment. and as you go over the next 12 hours, we are going to have an increase and more cloud cover later on tonight. but we'll break out to the sunshine as we go into the afternoon. temperatures, because we've had cloud cover around the d.c. ea, upper 60s, lower 70 is pretty much where we top out. again, there is the clouds right ere. and that is because we have a little easterly wind and that is offing some of the moistur the atlantic and right into the region. so again right around0 degrees today. the good news, light winds. we're dry out there. is not looking bad. tomorrow, mostly dry. if you are north of d.c., you could have a ew passing showers throughout the area. if you are south of d.c., looks like you'll be dry throughout the day. temperatures tomorrow are going to be in the upper 60s. now we head into the weekend. guess what? we've got severe storms on friday.

and wednesday and thursday, widespread showers andun thrstorms on friday and then unfortunately more rain around for this weekend. so if you want to get the car wash later on this afternoon, take your chances. because we have those increasing rain chances as we go through the rest of the week. we a dry out thereight now. you could see the clouds right there, coming right off the atlantic. then again i do believe they'll scour out and we'll have clearing skies for the nats game taking on the gitst 7:05 and not looking bad and great w baseballther. more clouds into the overnight and that will keep the temperature up to right around 60 degrees for some of the later innings. now tomorrow with the cloud cover, especially d.c. and peratures will be in the mid to upper 60s. i think you'll have more and that outh of d.c. is where you're going to see the temperatures around 70. tomorrow chance of a few light showers north of d.c. mainly bause we have a frontal system dropping from the north to the south. that is called a back door front in that direction. so again isolated showers mainly
