hundreds of people coming from all corners singing tether as they converge on notre dame for a candle light vigil. a city showing its strength after a fire that stunned the world, including so many from the tri state. she teaches french at a high school in new jersey, but france is her native home. notre dame a symbol of national pride. >> it was a very busy day of sightseeing. notre dame was our last stop. >> reporter: they were on a class trip to visit notre dame yeerday, took pictures of the famous woi famous windows and art and left about 6:20. half hour later their relatives started calling them about a fire. >> i had my phone in my hand ady to film, but when i actually saw t i didndid, i did realize how big the fire was. >> we were all emotional. we were crying,ac hugging other. it was very surreal.

the families and companies have alread pledged more than $550 million to restore the cathedral to its glory.rt repog from paris, nbc news. and a live look now at that vigil taking place outside the cathedral this evening. presidt macron says he wants the cathedral rebuilt in five years, but restoration experts and architects agree itould take decades. we go from something uplifting to something disappointing. a child screaming in pain aboard a school s. that is the picture painted by court documents just filed in prince william county court. tonight a school bus attendant ing the driver are f charges for this julie carey is live to explain why both are facing charges. jules. >> reporter: wendy, these are the court documents detailing the allegations against that

school bus attendant. they say on three separate ocsions in january he assaulted this 12-year-old special needstudent. and the school bus driver, she's charged, too, because police say she kept on driving even as that child cried out for help. school buses that carry special needs ohildren have notnly a driver but a bus attendant to watch over the children as they ride to and from school. this bus attendant, 52-year-old kelly rucker, is facing three felony child abuse charges for what happened on a bus in late january. a bus carrying mostly autistic students. he's accused of assaulting one of them inspect court documents say bus security camera videoht caug rucker grabbing a 12-year-old boy in an aggressive manner to try to restrain him from updisron. when that failed, rucker would deliberately close-hand punch the victim in the back of the head. the victim reportedly asked for help from the other children and, quote, screamed in pain throughout the duration of the

encounter. >> unfortunately we had an adult that was on the bus, the bus driver in particular, who wast n adulho witnessed the assault and could have taken action to prevent them and to report the matter to authorities, either the police or other school ie authorit and that didn't happen. >> reporter: the bus driver is also charged with child to stepment for failing in to help the child. and she also allegedly never alerted school officials about what was happening aboard her bus. now, i asked school officials about the three month gap between when the incident occurred and when police started investigating just last week. they declined to answer that question but did tell me both the bus attendant and driver were removed from bus duty back in january and kept from any contact with children. they say now with these charges, both of them have been placed on leave and if they are found guilty of felonies, both will be automatically dismissed. back to you in the studio. >> the parents must be

carrying storm water beneath the road has become corroded. now part of the road is starting to sag. our news reports they may close to install a permanent replacement pipe. v dot is also looking into a way to make repair work like that to be safer for crews and drivers. they'll be deploys rumble strips to work zone on two lane roads during the day. the idea is that the sound will give crews a heads up ofco ng vehicles. and give drivers another signal to slow down. accidents in work zones last year left more than 1,2 injured andilled nine people including some drivers. >> they were the first on the scene last june inhe t deadly wood row wilson crash. they were honored today for thr efforts. that fiery crash you may recall

fire broke out, the sense of silience remains and that's where people have been gathering, many inghong. rit now notre dame remains under permanent surveillance. the t prosecutor says there will be a long and extensive investigation into yesterday's devastating fire. earlier we got a look at somethf damage. the cathedral's roof and central spire destroyed. i'm sure you've seen that. many of the relics have been spared, including crown of thorns and the organ. lthough it's not clear in the organ sustained water damage. the 800-year-oldn woode beams can't be replaced. experts say they believe that the french president's goal of rebuildingt in five years is not realistic. they say it could take decades. but a number of wealthy reentrepreneurs and fh companies have pledged hundreds of millions of euros toward that effort to make it happen. and inhe meantime, much of the

art work is going to be housed and restored in the louvre. thai they've got their work cut out for them. >> thanks, leon. some somber moments today on the sam pcampus of virginia tec they remember the victims of one of the worst school shootings in u.s. history. 32 students and faculty members lost their lives when a man opened fire on the 1 campus years ago today. this morning a large crowd gathered at a memorial on campus laying a kreegt awreath and hol moment of silence. they also held blood drives in memory of the victims and survivors from that day. a home invaded. a family heldostage. this in montgomery county. a germantown man is facing multiple charges, that includes five counts of attempted murder. news 4 mark segraves broke this story on social media and he hospitals this all started with a forced and failed marriage.

>> reporter: it was yesterday afternoon at thi i house antown. the very day zion and his wife were due in court for a hearing on a protective order. police say the 29-year-old germantown man broke in with a gun and a knife and threatened to kill his wife and her familya including15-year-old boy. according to charging documents, was upset about his failed marriage and was prepared to die in a shootout with police. it started last summer when he asked his girlfriend to marry ehim. after h refused, he shot himself in a failed suicide attempt on july 3rd. after that according to police he threatened to kill his girlfriend's family if she didn't marry him. on september 14th the coupled harrie at the courthouse. they kept t marriage a secret for months until last month when fearing for her safety she told her family they were secretly married.

three days later a judge issued a protective order requiring him to stay away. according to his wife, he violated that order at least two times. the wife and her family moved hoping he wouldn't find them, but on april 15th, he did find them and in. according to police, he came prepared with duct tape and five sets of handcicfs. when pole arrived, they found him chokingis wife with a ife to her throat. >> he had mengtioned tt to the smily that if the police came he was going tohoot the police and kill the family. >> reporter: according to police they arrived just in time to avoid a tgedy. in germantown, mark segraves. >> he also had four bottles of a white liquid he said was poison. a hazmat team removed the liquid. it is still being tested. no one was seriously injured during this incident. he is expected to make his first court appearance tomorrow. n>> a second person has now b
