welcome back to reporter's notebook. i'm aerika gonzalez. a jury will soon decide if a deadly fire in a bethesda home was a crime. but this was not an ordinary house. in fact, ashis w a labyrinth of tunnels. and here to talk more about that, cory, this has been something else t see this play out. >> goes back to an t incidentt haened in december 2017, a house catches fire, investigators go in,hey find body in the basement. weeks later they come to find out that there are a series o tunnels underneath this home, about 200 feet spreading out in each direction. the big question is, well, what was this person doing down there? he was digging -- he was digging those tunnels. 21-year-old man, askia cofera, hired by the son of the
6:24 am
homeowner, daniel beckwith to dig tunnels. he was worried about the north korean nucle threat. wanted to build a nuclear bunker if you will underneathe his in bethesda in exchange for investing in mr. cofera's business. a fire started in t me. he is unable to make itout. now mr. beckwith ts onrial for his murder. prosecuthis are saying t tunnel and this basement was a death trap, hoarding conditions inside, and that mr. cofera would have been able toagic as bridgeoo far.21,n down s own validity, not forced to do it, had been down there multiple times. >> we should note he's not a construction worker. he's your average joe. >> 21-year-old entre wanted to make some money. and the homeowner is a multimillionaire, ived in a little bit of computer hacking
6:25 am
as well. so really interesting. next week the defense will call its star witness, a young man who did the same j t, he lived basement, dug tunnels for mr.beckwith. he says that the -- it was finei conditions were fine. he had everything he needed. he could communicateith mr. beckwith at all times. theti prosecuon is saying no, it will be interesting to see the juxtaposition of what the prosecutors are calling a death trap and what the oth witnesses will say is your normal workplace if you're digging tunnels underneath a home. very interesting. >>ormal work -- >> if you're digging tunnels underneath a home. >> interesting. a whole others pandora'ox about can you legally build tunnels beneath your property. that's a separate story. cory, thank you very much. it seems like everybody has a gripe about i-95. there are as many solutions
6:26 am
as there are complaints about this. there is a new study that looks at ways to improve the infamous 95. adam tuss. >> they're trying to come uth wi ideas. and this was great. d we this story, went out and asked all the drivers on 95, what is the solution? everyone would be like -- >> i don't know how to fix it. >> that's why wheere we are. the state of virginia wants to fire out what it could do. we're talking aboutrom the beltway to the north carolina border, this is an intense study going on. in ourisregion, the bet - especially for northern virginia has been look, if you want to get around traffic, you have to pay for it. that's why we see the express t lanes,he 66 tolls. and thexpress lanes are now being extend all the way down to fredericksburg on 95. in our immediate area, someihing is b done along that corridor. but you're also talking about america's main street on the eastern seaboard.g tabout tractor trailer
6:27 am
traffic, that has t come up and down that corridor, a whole bunch of other factors that go into that. ere is amtrak service that parallels i-95. could you potentially add more amtrak seteice, more commur service, vre, could you telework, oare flying cars the answer. i don't know. all the options are on the table. what is clear is that 95, not just in virginia, but all along the east coast, has become a ob severe m. if you drive 95, the cross bronx expressway in new york city is disastrous. it b turnpike essentially in new jersey after philadelphia a it can be just brutal. and soart of the problem here, i think, as wth go into future, is we all have to do some self-reflecting on the modes of transportation that we take. and that -- if you choose to drive on a road like 95, and you choose to do it in rush hour, yououave to expectl sit in traffic.
6:28 am
imd the options aren't very many at this point in unless you take more cars off the road. so those are, i think, some of iothe solutns that you'll actually hear. there is no easy answer here. elon mus isn't building a tunnel. >> oh, yeah. >> and uber doesn't exactly send aelopter to your house yet. we're in that stage right now. i think, you know, this presents a larger issue of cities, of places, of congestion that, look, if weigh tgh want to addr traffic and that kind of thing, the real answer is no not get in a car a find other ways around. >> other modes of transportation., lastur phones when we're behind the wheel of a vehicle. distracted driving we know has been a major issue all over the country, but specifically in prince george's county, they ve sort of launched this campaign, a safety campaign, to remind drivers that, you know, if you think it takes a -- i just looked at my phone for a split second, tt's all it
6:29 am
takes to cause a travesty to happen. 49 they had something like traffic fatalities last year. while that number is down, it is still a lot. so what ishis campaign, this initiative loolike in kind of the days to come. >> we got to ride along with the police chief, with county georg county and what brought all of this to the forefront is there has been a couple of deadly incidents recently, invving children. and it is not so much even just aboutacted driving, it is about being safe in your car. because in some of these instances they found the people weren't ung their seat belts, weren't buckled in. a lot of people if you think about your mind set getting in a car there is something different about riding in the front seat terms ofck seat in the the way people think about what u should do. you should always wear a seat are. no matter where you they found the people in the back seat were not wearing their seat belts. that's nber one.
6:30 am
they're trying to get that out of the way. number two, yeah, our distction in the car has gotten to a historic level. how many times are you sitting at a red light and sitting there waiting for the car to go and it just doesn't go because someone isdistracted. this campaign is looking to get people to refocus their efforts on safety. >> thank you, guys. thank you for joining ounce this reporter's notebook. i'm i'm erika gonzalez in for pat lawson muse. we'll see you next week. ay "news 4 tod starts now. atell, i don thin >> hey there, good morning. i'm meagan fitzgerald. >> and i'm cory smith in for adam tuss on this easter sunday. most of y still wiping the ec before that. sleepy dust out of your eyes. thousands of people have converged on the national mall for the annual sunrise e'rvice. >> w looking live at the service right now. and it is about bringing it in things are set to start right game six now. ad about now, actually. this, of course, is historic for >> caps lehis best of seven
